I am one of the few people I know that absolutely adored Secret of Evermore for Super Nintendo. I remember first seeing it in an issue of Nintendo Power, and from then on being totally hooked on the game. While it wasn’t quite the same caliber of Secret of Mana, it was still a solid, fun game, and very undeserving of the hate it gets.
Super-NES.com recently did an interview with Brian Fehdrau, lead programmer of Secret of Evermore. It’s chock full of some pretty nifty info. Check it out!

I’ll admit that I never gave Secret of Evermore a chance, but that’s because it didn’t have multiplayer. A 3-player game of Secret of Mana is one of the Best Things Everâ„¢ in my opinion. And to this day I’m still a little bitter that we (the U.S.) got SoE instead of Secret of Mana 2 (Seiken Densetsu 3).

Okay, I read the interview, and it turns out that SoE didn’t actually prevent SoM2 from coming to America. But I’m still bitter.

I’ve said it before on this site, but i loved this game.
now im off to read the interview.

I think it’s better than Seiken Densetsu 3, but the lack of multiplayer definitely hurt Secret of Evermore.

I played that game too, sweet sweet ring menus… when will I see u again??? But to be honest, while the game was decent, it was nowhere near the Seiken Densetsu quality…

Awesome, thanks for pointing this out.
Secret of Evermore was excellent. It got way too much backlash, I think.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is also pretty easy to play in English on an emulator and, frankly, I don’t think we missed terribly much.

I agree, anyone dissing on Secret of Evermore because it isn’t Seiken Densetsu 3 needs to replay the game. SoE is pretty good.

You are not alone. Evermore was opne of my favorites due in part to the dialogue and small touches like the ferryman’s listing of points of interest while crossing the desert.

If there was one fault of SoE, i think it would have to be that the areas have a “maze-y” design to them. It really slowed the pace is some parts, and was a bit more confusing then some dungeons of a traditional Zelda or Squaresoft title. Overall, I think it was a pretty good effort for Square USA, and I was hoping they would go on to produce another game.

Secret of Evermore was a really good game. The major flaws it actually had were the alchemy system (inspired but leveled up badly) and some of the bugs it had that could seriously pretty much break the game.

I loved this game. I loved trading things in the markets.

SoE was fabulous!!! The best part was in the future, your robot doggie popped toast out of his back
The dialogue and town names like Podunk kept me giggling throughout. Definitely deserves better than it gets!
