After a nice relaxing day today I really wanted to play some video games. I haven’t had the time to play much lately and I really wanted to pick up Wiimote and have some fun. Looking through my library of games I realized that I had a whole bunch of half finished games. Half finished games means that I would boot them up, realize I totally forgot what was going on and then have to start over from the beginning.
Since I wasn’t in the mood to do that, I thought I’d check out WiiWare for the first time. Yeah, like I said, I haven’t had much time to game lately. Anyway, I did a quick scan on the interweb of which games were worth checking out and determined that Lost Winds was the game I wanted. The always wonderful and reliable Eurogamer gave it 9 out of 10, which is good enough for me.
As you can tell by the title of this post, I was blown away. If this is what we can expect from WiiWare, count me and my credit card ready and willing. This game just oozes charm and polish. While playing I was reminded of first party Nintendo games like Jungle Beat and Pikmin, which in my book is about the highest praise a game can get.
I’m only about an hour in, but so far this game is beautiful, clever in its use of the Wii hardware, clever with its level designs and puzzles, has fantastic music and is worth way way more than the measly $10 I paid for it. Who else is playing this game? Lemme know what you guys and girls think of this wonderful gem!

I agree - the game is really interresting, but apparently quite short (haven’t finished it myself yet). Just want to remind everybody that at any time, spectaters can pick up a second remote and control a second wind-stream. Yay for multi-player!

Fabulous game, about time U.K developers turned out quality games,
Happy Fathers Day Everyone!!!!!

It’s a great but short game; Since the idea is pretty novel, I can certainly understand why they’d want to release it in episodic content format. Just to test the waters.. I hope they make a lot of money with it and keep releasing new episodes!
The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is simply FUN, the music is beautiful, and it’s fun, fun, fun.

Even though I had read that the game was quite short, it was still a shock when i got the “to be continued” message and realized the game was over. Well worth the money and if there is a sequel, I will download it on the first day (if I have any space in the refrigerator lol).
Gausser - 06.15.08 9:58 am
Wonderful game. I can’t wait for the sequel to drop, they’ll have my money the day it happens. More games like this are needed for the Wii.
Blue_Falcon - 06.15.08 10:56 am
I’ve been wanting to play this since the day it was released. One of the only ‘worth the price’ initial releases for WiiWare. Unfortunately, it’s my roommate’s Wii and he won’t buy the game himself.
So basically I have to buy it for him right? I mean, it’ll be tied to his Wii forever and I won’t be able to put it on an SD and take it to mine at home! I think he owes me money too.

I’m playing through it now.. what a great game! Really nice puzzle design, though I feel the wind is too sensitive when I just want to nudge the ball a little but it flies across the screen. Maybe I’m doing it wrong
Priyesh - 06.15.08 11:18 am
I 100% agree. This is one of the best games I have ever played.
It’s not actually short - for £7 you actually get an amazing 4 hrs or so. Considering a 20hr game is usually £40 it works out about right.

Bought it a week ago and played it for about an hour so far, and am also loving it. Very simple and fun. Looking forward to another installment.

Well worth $10, great game, cannot wait for the sequel/

I’ve got some niggles with it - the text is squint-worthily tiny for those of us without TVs more than 32 inches big, and I sorta wish things would move a little faster - but on the whole, it’s worth the money. As this is just the start of the game, I’m hoping that things get more advanced in later chapters. Also, that one can zoom out a little. Ironically, considering the tiny, tiny text, the viewing area is a bit small for my liking.
And yeah, I agree that the game length is just right for the price. This is basically a movie ticket, and for that, 3-4 hours of gameplay is good.

Very good game. Picked it up when wiiware came out, I haven’t completed it yet but so far it is excellent.

A charming game, well worth the $10. If only we had a hard drive for games like Lost Winds, the game took the spot of half my VC games.

Is that supposed to be a pun?

Oh, good!
I was really excited about this game when I first heard of it, but I saw a video of it on Kotaku once and thought, “Blech, it’s pretty and DULL”.
I’m glad that people have so many good things to say about it. I am curious to play it again.

Unfortunately I haven’t finished it yet (I got sidetracked on something, I think it was when I got bit by the ‘No More Heroes’ bug again). It is really great, I actually got it for my dad as part of his father’s day gift, so I hope he’s enjoying it right now. :0

It is great, yes.
But they should have been more upfront about the fact that this is basically the first installment of a longer game.

Honestly I loved Lost Winds as i was playing it, but I was really disappointed at the depth and length of it. More than anything Lost Winds feels like the start of a really amazing game. I feel like its a really good introductions, but just not meaty enough. I look forward to Lost winds 2

The NMH virus has done similar things to me/ It aches to be replayed.

I love Lost Winds. It is short, so hopefully the next one will be a bit longer and more challenging, but I can’t wait to see what else they do with the wind/Wiimote setup.
Dean - 06.16.08 12:38 am
Yeah! I was playing it… until I finished it in 3 hours! Time aside, this game was a sweet ride…
Enycma - 06.16.08 1:26 am
Well worth the asking price and a great introductory Wii game (not just Wiiware) for new players or lapsed ones from generations passed (NES, SNES or Genesis.. basically 2D gamers).
My wife loved it as well (she’s 1 hour into it) and she absolutely wants me to buy the sequel. She even had a good time when I was playing, pointing out any statues I might not be seeing on the screen or when an enemy was about to attack.

.. i see what you did there ..

Love this game. It might be a bit on the short side, but the presentation, gameplay and controls are amazing. In the end, it’s a great game!

Great game I really enjoyed it and only have to things to gripe about.
First thing is the length of the game, cause sadly it really feels like a demo to something greater.
Second, although some have praised the controls as innovative, I actually feel like I’m playing Okami but instead of the celestial brush it’s the Lost Wind (which also has had it’s power split up into fragments that you must find) and over all Okami did a better job of making use of such things as using streams to move fire/water/electricity/ice.
Still not bad for a mere 10 bucks, and a pleasant distraction.
Maverick - 06.16.08 11:57 pm
you guys have me curious now. gonna have to check out this game.
adriantango - 06.17.08 11:09 am
It’s a lot of fun, but I finished it in 2 hours. I’m still undecided if it was worth the money.
Smannesman - 06.17.08 1:08 pm
Generally I felt rather dissapointed at the end.
The game has a nice calming feeling and in the end I was just agrivated that I lost my money for it.
Its like getting a massage just to get smacked in the face for no reason at the end. It felt good, but it didn’t last or end well.
The graphics and interactable backgrounds were a nice touch.
Though gameplay was rather easy and not at all challenging.
Often times I had to kill myself with a rock to remind myself that the playable charecter could die.
Music is very nice and calming, but repeats a bit too much and kinda got on my nerves after the hundredth loop.
Co-op is fun, but you need to be on the same level as your friend. Otherwise the second player can just take over more or less. Good communication required, but the instant join in feature is good for random bits of teasing and annoying when they try to do a long jump.
Navigation was a tad undocumented. A map woulda been nice though would have shown how small the area is.
NPCs give you good enough clues but you’ll find yourself walking over the obvoius entrance before you realize you havent been there yet.
One boss and only one boss. Wich was easy to dodge and over all easy to beat. Not at all any more challenging than the small globs that you blow around to their doom.
On a plus side, now that I think about it, there are no endless pits of death. something good to see in a 2D platformer. They seem to be used too commonly these days.
Game goes by very fast and basicly just makes you go left and right back and fourth till its all over. Infact you’ll end up finding new powers before you realize you couldn’t get to the other side without them.
One thing that botherd me the most though was the collectable statues.
They sit there tuanting you to collect them. Making you think you’ll get something for them. But in the end. *Smack* Right in the face. You get NOTHING. For them.
No sound test, no concept art, no “congrats on a 100% game!”, no extra minigame, nothing. Filling that gap may have been a saving grace for the game for me, but the fact that theres nothing extra for it (and they take awhile to collect if you didnt do it on the way through the game first).
Overall its a nice looking sounding game thats best suited toward the more casual gamer and less experienced gamer. Though those looking for a calming experience rather than challenge will find it. I can give the game points for not being aggrivating to play since you can always get back up after a large fall or loss of life. Though if you expect to get more after the ended, well, your out of luck.
Also the game doesnt explain much about the town and alternate pathways like steps going up in the background are ignored, even by the NPCs that wonder how you got up to that higher ground.
So expect more wonderment than immersion.
Id rather the game had been 800 instead of 1000. Though a little extra would have gone a long way to fill the gaps. Overall I think your paying for graphics more than gameplay. So keep that in mind.
Would make a very good gift to family or other casual gamers. Kinda like an expensive heartwarmer card you can play and lets em know ya care.

This is a very interesting game. Its controlling method is very new to me. I’m kind of LOST in playing Lost Winds in the beginning. However, after getting used to it, I do enjoy the game
Gamer12 - 06.20.08 12:12 am
I know how to throw boulders and fire, yet I have to do it 100 times to burn down an entrance and I still haven’t been able to get through a gate. Is this a glitch or is it really supposed to be this frustrating?
