I was talking about Wii Fit with a fellow Canadian rebel earlier. In Canada, we use the metric system, so our measuring units are centimeters (cm) instead of inches and kilograms (kg) instead of pounds. Even though his Wii’s country setting is set to Canada, the game still displays the units in in/lbs.
He decided to ask the question on Nintendo’s support forums. It turns out that, if you want your units to be in cm/kg, you need to select your language as either Spanish or French. Why wasn’t the unit system placed as an option in the game? I mean, the entire game is based on weight and height, plus the japanese version uses cm and kg.
What’s up with this, Nintendo?

Being canadian myself, ive never enountered anyone using kg over lbs so I dont really see the problem there.
Jhongerkong - 05.23.08 8:01 pm
That’s kinda dumb, we use the metric system here in NZ too
TakaM - 05.23.08 8:02 pm
You have to admit though that it’s weird it wasn’t included as an option. Right now they’re forcing you to choose either french or Spanish if you want it displayed in cm/kg
Edgar - 05.23.08 8:04 pm
I’m also Canadian and I myself NEVER use kg when measuring personal weight, so I too don’t see the problem.
shorty1k - 05.23.08 8:04 pm
I am a Canadian and do use kg/cm.
matt - 05.23.08 8:07 pm
I don’t use kg and m/cm and I’m Canadian too. But if I wanted to I could just switch it to french.
Carlo - 05.23.08 8:13 pm
Yeah, doesn’t Canada use Imperial measurements, since they have the Queen on their money?
jam - 05.23.08 8:14 pm
@JAM
Uh, the British use Metric. Only three nations on Earth use imperial: United States, Myanmar, and Liberia.
TBot - 05.23.08 8:19 pm
Nope, metric. Although imperial is common.
I think the US is the only country that uses ONLY Imperial.
Edgar - 05.23.08 8:20 pm
Metric is dominate.
Lotan - 05.23.08 8:23 pm
nintendo tries to make the options so few to keep it simple, that they dont look at enough details.
that would be NAs fault for not asking for a reprogramming for canada.
waltermh - 05.23.08 8:26 pm
actually the japanese version uses metric…
Edgar - 05.23.08 8:29 pm
it’s just lazy localisation. you get this a lot in european versions of games which are translated directly from the american, so everything’s feet and inches, even though everyone in europe uses metric (except in britain where it’s maybe 50/50 at the moment).
x - 05.23.08 8:30 pm
I’m American, so I use Pounds and Feet/Inches for weight and height, but I can see the value in having the option, as not everyone uses the same units as I/my area does, regardless of what language they speak.
That, and I use the metric system for pretty much everything else. God I hate the Imperial system.
Matt - 05.23.08 8:42 pm
Whats up with USA still not using standard units…?
paq - 05.23.08 8:47 pm
So, is Canada’s localization just the US version? Does the US version also include the French/Spanish options and, if so, what if you are a French/Spanish speaker who prefers using inches and pounds, what about those people???
A bit off topic but I do feel the need to say it being an American currently in Canada. I know this may seem very ethnocentric but I REALLY don’t like the game manuals and case covers that include both French and English. They take up so much more room and create such a cluttered feel when looking at the case. I have to say that the Games that have two Separate Manuals and a reverse side cover slip are MUCH preferred. I mean, it’s not like by doing so they’re saying one is better but, in the same line of thought as this post, merely giving you a choice.
Stuffed - 05.23.08 8:48 pm
P.S. The way that WATAKANA replied to the admin was very well done and it would be interesting to hear how the attempt to return the game works out!
Stuffed - 05.23.08 8:53 pm
Yeah, I can’t wait for the official response
Edgar - 05.23.08 9:04 pm
Here in Australia we get cm/kg.
Robert - 05.23.08 9:11 pm
In Canada, everything is metric except for measurements of height and weight. Regardless, the measurement system should be configurable independently from the region. I wonder what my weight is in stones?
Echolocating - 05.23.08 9:19 pm
Fuckin’ Americans! Get with it, already. Metric works.
Shaun Hatton - 05.23.08 9:42 pm
In Ontario, driver’s licenses show height in cm.
Patrick - 05.23.08 9:50 pm
To all Canadians: You’re dumb.
jk
Dean - 05.23.08 10:03 pm
Canadian here, I use lbs and feet for weight/height, but I think it should be an option.
However…
not a big deal…
Myles - 05.23.08 10:10 pm
Damn Canadians! Use the REAL metric system.
Neeksleep - 05.23.08 10:17 pm
METRIC SUCKS
Metric - 05.23.08 10:40 pm
Old world underground, where are you now?
Echolocating - 05.23.08 10:53 pm
GO AMERICA!
And echolocating, nice Metric reference.
ANON - 05.23.08 11:04 pm
Well I grew up on metric, and I live in Canada so… this sorta sucks I guess, I’ll deal with it though.
Metric > Imperial btw. Makes life in science class that much easier.
yanipheonu - 05.23.08 11:24 pm
The assumptions the game makes based on height & weight are generalized and inaccurate anyway, so not understanding the units of measurement really shouldn’t be a reason to return the game. Wii Fit is really just a series of mini games like Wii Sports, not a replacement for a personal trainer.
Nick - 05.24.08 1:17 am
UGH. Measuring and weighing is such a pain :/ Another Canadian weighing in here… I talk about my weight and my height in imperial units, but if I’m talking about distances then I use metric. I run 5K, but I have no idea how many miles that is.
If I’m dressmaking or crafting, I use metric, but if I’m tailoring, I use imperial.
I’m currently living in England and every time I go to the doctor and they weigh me in kilos or stones, I have no idea what I weigh.
jgoreham - 05.24.08 5:36 am
Wii fit uses kg and m here in England. And it’s easy to convert stones to kilos - just remember 11 stones is 70 kilos, so one stone is six-and-a-bit kilos, and a bit of multiplication is all that’s needed. In theory we should all be using metric, as imperial measurements were phased out here in the 70s and 80s on becoming European, but in practice older people still use the older scales. Come to England, canadians!
Sadat - 05.24.08 5:48 am
I’m in the UK and mine is stuck in pounds and inches.
SADAT - How did you get yours in metric?
It does seem very odd that they didn’t include the option to change. Also it would have been very easy to let you choose your mii in 2 player jogging, but they just decided to leave it out. Very odd.
Neil - 05.24.08 11:52 am
LOL!
Pounds and Inches originated from the UK (along with the English language).
Because the English use it, so do Americans…
MAL - 05.24.08 12:18 pm
That is odd and annoying, but not a big deal. I’m in the US and I use metric alot because imperial measuremnts are just stupid, but I doubt we’ll ever move oway from them for a long time. Btw jgoreham, 5k is 3.1 miles
peshue - 05.24.08 12:22 pm
Whoa. This is a bit of a problem. Maybe I’ll delay my purchase until its changed… Wii update, anyone?
not TOO big of a deal, though. Just a mistake on Nintendo’s part. Let’a hope they actually take notice.
gojiguy - 05.24.08 4:22 pm
….you care about this?
Simon - 05.24.08 7:44 pm
Argh!
The only way they could possibly make this worse is to mix up Imperial and metric units, for example height in cm and weight in stones. It’s a personal bugbear of mine, Bill Bryson’s book on science drove me mad doing that.
Oh and Imperial units are not the same in the U.S. and the U.K. for example an Imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon I believe.
(sigh) At least we are not dealing with the bloody silly measurement systems used in U.S. cooking.
Si Fir - 05.25.08 7:43 am
I live in Canada and I think weight in pounds is a lot more common actually than kilograms here. Same thing with height. Everything else is metric though.
rwooooo - 05.25.08 5:24 pm
I used height in cm when I was in grade 5.
For weight/height, I use the imperial system. It’s easier when you’re calculating BMI and that other shit. But I think Wii Fit is fine for now.
Shiro786 - 05.25.08 7:28 pm
I’m Canadian and use imperial for height/weight, metric for everything else. Infact that’s what I learned in school >>; Although I do known and can use cm for height, I’ve never encountered anyone weighing in kg, unless it was something really small like ingrediants in science class, or food. Everything else though use metric, just the height/weight it’s sort of either/or depending on the situation and which is easier.
Code - 05.26.08 1:03 am
Considering Canada consists of 1% of sales in North America. Why would Nintendo contribute programmers to deal with this little issue?
Kevin - 05.26.08 1:04 am
“I know this may seem very ethnocentric but I REALLY don’t like the game manuals and case covers that include both French and English. They take up so much more room and create such a cluttered feel when looking at the case.”
I know. They should get rid of the english thing since everyone in the U.S. speaks spanish or needs to understand spanish now…
ridgecity - 05.26.08 11:02 pm
I am American, and I argue the point of how ridiculous it is that we still use strictly the imperial system. I don’t see the change anytime soon, but I do think a gradual change is occurring none the less.
Nathan - 05.27.08 11:56 am
They should have just make the measurement system a separate selectable option rather than attaching it to the language setting…
Steven - 05.28.08 11:06 am
I don’t know who this guy is, but in Canada though we use the metric system for nearly everything else, I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t measure their height and weight in feet, inches and pounds. Also it is fairly common to see imperial measurments used in recipes.
Jonathan - 05.29.08 1:20 pm
In Soviet Russia, measurements choose you!
Yakov - 06.05.08 1:06 pm
I am a swiss in the UK, I cannot understand “stones” and it removes some of the fun for me.
I emailed support and they said “tough”.
UK has a lot of immigration, I cannot understand their attitude.
Tomji - 06.08.08 4:02 pm
Yeah, same problema in Brazil. Come on, it couldn’t be THAT HARD. It’s pathetic to require someone to actually calculate it while this person should actually be having some fun. Not to mention… if a mobile phone can do it in a split second, why can’t oh mighty Wii?
Vivì Café - 06.13.08 1:41 pm
Canadian and proud of using metric!
It is really dumb no to give us the choice, die imperial system die… and to counter what the other hosers said above, I do not know my lb & in measurements and won’t care to learn!!
Metrix - 06.14.08 11:24 pm
What about, you know, all the rest of the world? I have a very strong impression that there are A LOT of countries where centimeters and kilograms are used instead of pounds, inches and feet.
I live in Brazil, and almost no one here even remotely knows how many centimeters are there in one inch. Me included. So I have to play it with a cell phone nearby, so I can access the converter software just to know exactly how many kilograms I gained/lost since my last Body Check.
In the end it’ll probably be good, since I’ll just have to learn the damn thing, and learning is always good. But it’s very annoying. Specially considering how EASY would have been for Nintendo to just add and option, since most racing games do for the ones that can’t figure out wether 100mph is too slow or too fast.
