In what is an almost-but-not-completely-awesome move, Nintendo has announced that they will start making GameCube controllers again in Japan. Makes sense, Smash Bros and Mario Kart have both created huge demand for the old GCN controllers.
The only downside – these aren’t WaveBirds. No wireless for you! To make up for it, the cord has been extended to three meters (about a meter longer than the old GCN controller cords). Perhaps they lost the WaveBird mold after all?
Who knows, but this is still pretty cool news. These white GCN controllers will be released this month in Japan for 2000 yen (about twenty smackers). Hopefully, Nintendo will put a few of these out on our shores, too.

I’d buy some. My Wavebird and recently purchased Spice controller are the only two still alive. My other 3 are shot, control stick-wise.

I’d buy one. The longer cord would make it worth it.
I bought the last Gamecube controller at my Gamestop, and they haven’t had any since! (The first party ones of course, third-party doesn’t count.)

That’s rad.

Those are totally sweet. I hope they come out stateside, I’d be in a jam if my current silver GC controller wore out and I had nothing to play Smash with. (Wiimote smashing is an abomination to me, I need my c-stick and X button placement.)

Na, I’ll stick with the wavebirds. It would’ve been nice if they added stuff though, like a home button and, although a long shot, re-arrange A,B,X,Y to the standard SNES layout. (Classic Controller has it, but the GCN mold is just simply better.

I’d get one…if it was a Wavebird. Until then, my Wavebird and Black GCN controllers are fine.

There’s been a white GameCube controller available for a long while now, though it’s not an official product. Check it out.
Still has the same mold.

It’s great that they extended the cord, the gc cord was always too short. What is it with a lot of japanese controllers have short cords anyways.

I am sad that these aren’t gonna be wavebirds, but that super long cord makes up for it. Plus, they are white, which is rad. w00t.

Rooms in Japan probably aren’t very… er… roomy. A six-foot wire could probably reach any area of a typical dwelling there. Being approximately 3 meters away from my Wii at the moment, however, I welcome the change.

You know they’re just going to wait until later to release white WaveBirds. Then they can sell you controllers twice!

Goodness, do I ever hope these make it over here to North America. I’ve actually been on the lookout for a new ‘Cube controller, and the fact that these are white is super cool ’cause it fits with the Wii aesthetic.

I already own 6 GameCube controllers: 2 Wavebirds, 1 black, 1 orange, 1 silver and 1 purlple third-party… but I still want this! Ah!

Bah, needs to be 4m before it’s useful to me. Guess we’ll be sitting on the floor once SSBB finally comes out here, since I only have one WaveBird.
SV - 04.10.08 3:00 am
I’m good for GC controllers. I have 4 wired ones and 5 Wavebirds.
Megashaun - 04.10.08 9:07 am
You know, they used to sell game cube controller cable extenders…and they were even Nintendo branded. I have three extenders, three wired GC controllers, and two wavebirds. Nothing is out of reach for me!

Too bad the GameCube controller layout (especially the buttons) stinks.
One of my least favourite controllers on any console. The L & R had way too much depression and were very hard to press all the way quickly because of the travel time. (Hence not doing very well in RE4 until it got the Wii edition, for example.) The gigantic A button and odd shaped other buttons made many games outside of first-party Nintendo titles simply awkward to play. The Z button location was just awkward, and should have been under the contoller like the N64. Why can’t they take the opportunity to re-make the controller into one that’s actually usable?
Bitch, bitch, whine, whine. I have a PS2 to GC controller adaptor, and thanks to that I was able to enjoy my GameCube games. I don’t even own a PS2! I also have a PS2 to 360 adaptor because the d-pad on the 360 controller is quite possible the worst d-pad ever. Basically my apartment is full of PS2 to X converters because the controller simply rocks. I digress.

The GameCube controller design is great when playing games that have actually been designed for that controller. I’ve always been a fan of the GC controller layout, but the complaints are valid. Nintendo made a specialized controller, yet didn’t bother to compel developers to actually do anything with it.
Scypher - 04.11.08 3:05 am
@Scypher: Sounds like you could also be talking about the Wii.
Megashaun - 04.11.08 3:05 pm
Nice to hear that Nintendo will continue producing the best controller ever made.
I love everything about this controller - the stick, the face buttons, the L/R buttons - and the way it fits perfectly in my hands.
Maybe I will import one, but I still have 3 wired ones and 2 wavebirds.
Bodo - 04.11.08 4:58 pm
I want new wavebirds.
Greg - 04.13.08 4:34 pm
Wooooo, go GameCube! I think it’s pretty awesome to see GCN controllers make a comeback, and come in this nice Wii White color. 3 meters and rumble, for some people, will be better than a WaveBird. Luckily for me, my black Cubetroller still works, as does my WaveBird (which by the way, I got at E3, 2002, by winning it in the Mario Party competition). I had this thing weeks before it came out in the US, and it came in a velvet bag.
I’d like to see this new controller come out in the US, though. Many people would get good use out of it.
