I recently got Arkanoid DS, Space Invaders Extreme, and the DS Paddle Controller from Taito, and I’m here to tell you this stuff is must-buy material. Trust me, it’s brilliant.
Though both Arkanoid and Space Invaders were recently announced for a US release, there’s a catch: Taito’s Paddle Controller isn’t making the jump. This is a major bummer, but the good news is that the titles will still be compatible with the Japanese controller, which you can order for twenty bucks from Play-Asia.
Pink is the only stand-alone color left at present, and if this hints that the controller itself is no longer bring produced, take my advice and jump on the offer ASAP. Otherwise, you might be best to go with the Arkanoid/Paddle Controller bundle for fifty bucks.
I’ve always been a fan of A) paddle controllers, and B) awesome accessories, and Taito’s offering represents the portable pinnacle of both. The minute you start playing, you’re transported to a 1980s bowling alley arcade, and pure nostalgic addiction ensues.
Both games are great, but Space Invaders Extreme easily takes the cake. The presentation is top-notch, the style is wicked, and the gameplay is phenomenal. I’ve never, ever had this much fun with Space Invaders before, and the controller takes it to another level.
Something about this package feels too good to be true, as if the paddle controller is going to become a fabled relic in no time flat. Take my advice and pick it up while you still can.

Oh man I shouldn’t be buying something like this so near to the end of the semester, but that bundle is just way too tempting. I’m getting that and for sure Space Invaders when it comes out in the US. There Taito you’ve got my $100, make a new Darius already!

Hell yeah~ I got the Arkanoid and paddle combo package day-one here in Nippon and it’s a sweet set up.
I’ve wanted Arkanoid with the paddle controller ever since it was completely unaffordable back in the day on the NES and I wasn’t gonna miss out this time around. It’s like the arcade experience at home, err, on the road.
2 gamer-thumbs up~
(I’m still waiting on Space Invaders Extreme cuz $40 was a bit steep for it.)

Does the paddle work with the DS Phat, or just Lite? Also, I would love to see an update to the classic paddle game Kaboom.

it works with both DS models, and actually a little better with the Phat, apparently, as it inserts all the way in.

Hey Nick, anywhere in Korea I could grab that or did you order it off Play Asia?

I think NCS has colors other than pink: http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/TCPP-20018.html
They’re a little pricier there, though.

Scratch that, they’re out but plan to restock in a week. Hopefully the controllers are still being made.

Why do I have to be unemployed right now? I’d love to pick up a paddle accessory, but am dirt poor

@ jgoreham - Sell a kidney?

Yeah… $20(or $50!) is dirt cheap compared to buying an arcade cabinet but pricey compared to, say, groceries. Le sigh.

They are also available here for $22.

@ JD- didn’t know that EB Games was accepting kidney trade-ins now, lol
