Iwata Asks is one of my favorite things that post-Wii Nintendo does. It gives you a lot of interesting information, gives you an inside look into Nintendo, and shows how everyone interacts with each other. They have also had a lot of big names in them. Iwata-san (of course), Itoi-san (creator of the Mother series), and Miyamoto-san just to name a few.
This one deals with Mario Kart Wii. It touches on topics like why online battle mode wasn’t in Mario Kart DS, why the Wii Wheel was so important, and how the Mario Kart Wii Channel works. It’s a great read, just like the others.
The older ones are excellent too:
Iwata Asks: Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Iwata Asks: Super Mario Galaxy
Iwata Asks: Wii Fit
Iwata Asks: What is Wii?
Devs Talk About the Wii Channels

I agree nothing else makes me more excited for the game haha
The Smash Bros. one was really cool, and I wasn’t sold on Mario Kart until I just read it.

Man, Iwata is really good at selling stuff, after reading all that I’m kinda exited about using that cheap piece of plastic shell…

It seems like there’s a lot of people that are convinced that the wheel is the worst thing since the virtual boy even though they’ve never even touched one. I doubt this will convince them otherwise, but it’s a interesting read as always. As a note, adding that blue ring really would add quite a bit to the price.

The footnotes are great, it’s like they write these interviews for people who never heard of video games.
“9. Nintendogs: A game to enjoy communication with puppies.”
Pure comedy gold.

This one’s really interesting. Talks about how the more hardcore people will want to have the GCN controller for time trials and online, and how inconvenient it was trying to play MKDS online with friends.
The ghosts system sounds good as well. In something like Forza 2 you can only download ghosts from the top times, and if you aren’t serious enough to be near that level it’s completely useless since you’re completely dead by the second or third corner. Having ghosts to download that are slightly faster than you is a far better idea, quite amazing for Nintendo to come up with a good online idea for once haha.
I’m pretty pumped about the game now, was a bit meh before, but it seems it’ll really be good especially with SSBB not even having a PAL release date yet…

On page 5 I found this interesting quote towards the end…
“By the way, a new character has joined in from Super Mario Galaxy, so I hope you look forward to it…”
Cool!

Is it wrong for me to like the wheel, especially that classy black one, with the silver ring? I’m getting the game just because it’s Mario Kart. Heart you, Nintendo! <3

Oh, and I forgot to mention the fact that if you use the wheel it shows up in your rankings. That’s cool stuff.

most people just afraid the look like a kid if they’re seen playing a game with a make-believe steering wheel. They felt like it’s going to tarnish their image. lol
I can’t wait for this game enough though. DO WANT!

I wonder if this point has been made or not, but. Doesn’t there seem to be a bit of a reluctance in using the Wii mote for the Wii. Especially for games like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. I personally like using the Wii mote and Nunchuck for Smash, and I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy using the Wheel for Mario Kart. Your thoughts 4CR…

@A Gamer
I don’t think it’s a reluctance, it’s more keeping with what they said they were going to do: draw in new gamers, but keep the old ones.
Smash doesn’t use the Wiimote motion sensing functionalities at all, Mario Kart Wii has regular control setups for GCN and Classic controllers, and Super Mario Galaxy uses the Wiimote but not in the main control scheme.
But then you have Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Metroid Prime 3, Battalion Wars, Big Brain, and Link’s Crossbow Training.
So they are just trying to achieve a balance of games aimed at new gamers and old. And even in these games made for old gamers, like Mario Kart, they have Wii-specific control schemes that will help bring in new users.

Iwata Asks: Zelda Twilight Princess is missing from that list.
Great interviews.
They really should think about publishing them on video.
