For 7 weeks I made a daily commitment to Wii Fit, and in my opinion it paid off. I was able to both lose weight and gain muscle. Along the way I also gained self-confidence in my body, and self esteem in general.
Over the course of this experiment I wrote over 50 pages of journal entries and impressions. I will now try to break that information down into one short post with statistics, a graph and my “before and after” pictures.

Review of the Experiment Results
Total time since beginning the experiment: 35 hours 5 minutes
Starting BMI: 25.73
Current BMI: 24.24
Starting weight (7 weeks ago) 80 kg (about 176.4 lbs)
Current weight: 75.1 kg (about 165.6 lbs)
Weight Loss: 4.9 kg (about 10.8 lbs)

Notes on the Exercise
For the experiment I set out to do between 30 and 60 minutes of exercise each day. I’m happy to say that I was fairly successful at keeping this goal. On two occasions I put in less than 30 minutes, and two more days I put in more than 60 minutes. I chose this amount of time because any less than 30 minutes isn’t really worth it, and more than 60 minutes would only rarely fit into my schedule.
The first few weeks of exercise were very hard. My body would frequently become sore since it was not used to getting very much exercise (other than my legs, since I ride my bike everyday). The endurance exercises were just that, endurance. I would feel like giving up many times, but as the program continued I became much better at the exercises. By the end of the 7th week my main gripe was that the game had become too easy.
Heeding the advice from fellow rebels in the comments of these posts, I decided to start alternating arm and abdominal exercises to allow the muscles time to recuperate after a hard workout. Overall, the advice from the comments proved to be invaluable.
Notes on Diet
When starting this project, I stated that I did not intend to alter my diet. I chose to do this for a number of reasons. First I wanted to see what Wii Fit could do on it’s own, and I had to keep my diet constant to act as a “control” of sorts. Secondly, my experience with diets has not been positive. I have tried dieting many, many times. It has never once worked out for more than a few days. I would usually end up actually gaining weight in the process. The other reason was that with various pre-wedding parties already planned for me, I knew that it was not ideal timing to start a diet.
During this experiment I never skipped a meal and never felt hungry. I knew that if my body felt it wasn’t getting enough food that I would overcompensate for that loss by eating more. So I ate the same quantity of food that I had before starting the experiment. The key to the process was that I didn’t start eating more than I usually do. The formula that I worked out for my weight loss involves me keeping my food intake the same, but adding a dash of exercise.
I never consciously dieted during this experiment. However I can’t ignore that Wii Fit impacted my eating habits in a number of ways. For one, I can’t eat while I am doing Wii Fit. The hour or so I devoted to doing Wii Fit was normally my “watching TV” time. I would often do this with the aid of snacks. While doing Wii Fit it was impossible for me to eat something at the same time. Of course after the workout I still sometimes grabbed a snack, but more often than not I would just grab a shower and go to bed.
I also started to eat my dinner earlier in the day, as to not have a full stomach for Wii Fit. Exercising is not nearly as enjoyable with a full belly. I would also make sure not to over-eat so that the workout would go better. As I said before, if after the workout I was still hungry, I would eat. I never deprived myself of food, but as the weeks went on the desire to eat after a workout decreased.
The daily weighing of myself (and the visible weight loss) also changed something on a psychological level. Now when I eat a hamburger I will think to myself “How much Wii Fit would it take to burn this off?” I will still eat the hamburger, but maybe I won’t get the hot apple pie to go with it. What happened is that I became aware of my eating. It started to mean something when I could see that it had a daily impact on my body.
Notes on Lifestyle
The added exercise caused many changes, and not all of them were physical. For one, I found myself sleeping better. This is possibly just from being tired after the workout. I also had more energy at work and at home.
There is also a growing sense of pride in my accomplishments. For the first time I have started to not be ashamed of my body. I also feel that I am gaining strength, and though I am not a strong man right now, I feel that in time I could be. The exercise has really helped my general self-esteem. So much in fact that I feel that I can show the following photos.
Photos
The photo below, of me in the gray t-shirt, was taken for my very first Wii Fit post. I had originally intended to post a picture of myself without a shirt, but after seeing what that looked like I decided that it was too embarrassing to post. I took a second set of pictures with myself more covered up. The second half of the photo was taken a few days ago while wearing the same t-shirt and jeans.

I notice right away when putting on that shirt that it wasn’t as tight as I had remembered it. I feel I could probably fit a Japanese “large” size now rather than “extra large”. Here is the side view.

Sadly this picture doesn’t really show very much and it is hard to tell how much progress I made. I knew this from the beginning, so I decided around week 3 that if the experiment worked well enough that I could show some “topless” pictures.
I am still very embarrassed to be posting the images on the Internet. Not so much because I feel fat, but because I know I am a very hairy man. Still, in the interest of “science” I present the following photos.

As you can see I still have a gut but my sides have tightened and my “love handles” are starting to go away.
The next picture is slightly deceiving. In the “before” picture my posture is not wonderful and in the “after” picture I am standing up very straight. Also I had eaten a big meal before the first picture was taken. So the actual results are not quite as dramatic as this photo makes them look. Because of this I wasn’t sure if I should post this picture, I don’t want to mislead anyone or become like one of those late-night infomercials. Keep these things in mind as you look at the next picture.

This last “after” picture doesn’t have a “before”. One of the results I wasn’t expecting when I started this project was muscle gain in the arms. Wii Fit didn’t seem like it was very well suited to upper body exercises, so I never took a “before” photo of my arms or measured them. Below is an “after” picture. It probably doesn’t look very impressive, as my arms and shoulders are still FAR from muscular, but you will have to take my word on this one. They used to be a lot worse.

Final Wrap-up
In conclusion, Wii Fit works. But like any exercise it only works if the person using it is willing to put in the effort. I could have achieved the same results simply by doing sit-ups and push-ups everyday, and going for a run. In fact, that may have let me obtain even better results. However I don’t realistically believe that I would have had enough motivation to do that.
Wii Fit works because it shows me everyday how much I weigh, how much time I’ve invested, and how well I am doing on my exercises. It also keeps fantastic records that I can look back on and it makes charts showing my progress (or lack thereof).
The balance board is nothing magical. Just by standing on it you don’t get a better body. You have to put in the time. What Wii Fit tries to do is to make that time enjoyable, and for me it accomplished that goal. To say that Wii Fit made me thinner is giving it too much credit. I made me thinner, but Wii Fit helped.
One Last Anecdote

My wedding was on the 29th of March. During this time I had family and friends come from other parts of Japan, as well as the United States. Many of these people I hadn’t seen for a long time. So many times during the wedding party people would come up to me and compliment me on how thin I looked. At first I though it was just politeness but as more and more people told me that I, “look like a different person” I started to believe that maybe it was true.
My wedding planner thought the same. The tuxedo I was fitted for originally no longer fit and I had to change it at the last minute. Even as I walked down the aisle I felt that my pants were a bit too loose.
What Now?
I have no plans to stop doing Wii Fit. I will keep it up and probably keep doing daily logs. I don’t know if they are interesting enough to keep posting here, but they have been of great help to me. I recommend keeping a daily journal to anyone considering Wii Fit, or exercise in general.
As soon as I get back from my honeymoon, both I and my wife plan to use Wii Fit. In one months time I will post an update of how I am doing, and we’ll see if the weight loss has really “stuck”.
Thank you all for reading these posts over the last few weeks and commenting on them. All of your encouragement really helped keep me going. The advice you shared also made my training more effective and enjoyable. Thanks everyone!

Congrats sir! The results are pretty impressive! I wonder how many pounds of body fat you lost, since muscle is heavier and you did gain some of that. Theoretically your fat loss could be more than 10 lbs. Regardless, a great achievement. Looking great and that tux is pretty fly! Huzzah for the wedding as well! You’ve accomplished the ‘Wife Get’!
DCSimian - 04.02.08 9:29 am
That actually looks like a pretty big difference. Congrats on the weight loss and the wedding! This actually hypes me up a bit more for Wii Fit. I was thinking about importing, but it would run about $150, and I’m not sure if the Wii Freeloader works with it yet, so I figured I could wait two months. But after seeing your experiment, maybe I should bite the bullet. Thanks for this great experiment!
Chairhome - 04.02.08 9:30 am
Congratulations.
Also, if you think you’re a “very hairy man”, you haven’t seen hairy.
Simon - 04.02.08 9:34 am
Keep up the posts. They are good for people to know what to expect from Wii Fit. It will also probably help you keep up with it as well.
Did you do this on a carpet or a hard floor? Ive often wondered if the board will work on a carpet since most bathroom scales dont.
mizzle - 04.02.08 10:12 am
I plan on buying Wii Fit, and I hope I can have the same will power you had to use it daily. I’ve tried to “train my brain” regularly, but I always manage to get out of the habit. Even if it does only take minutes a dayTM.
By the way, is it customary to wear a trench coat tux in Japan? Cause I’ve never seen anything like that.
Colin - 04.02.08 10:17 am
nice Neo suit.
ray - 04.02.08 10:23 am
@Colin
With my new weight loss, it was the only Tux they had on hand in my size. The one I picked out months ago was too loose. Yeah, they are popular in Japan right now. And I could go around telling people that there is no spoon.
Vinnk - 04.02.08 10:34 am
Meh. MY Neo-coat in highschool was exactly the right length. It ended exactly one inch from the ground. When I walked, it looked like I glided.
Anyways, awesome stuff. I wouldn’t have believed Wii Fit was so… functional, if it hadn’t been for your weekly progress reports. Kudos.
Oh, and congrats on getting married!
JonEthan - 04.02.08 10:38 am
You do look different, but you never looked bad. Hmmm, you don’t seem very hairy; Japanese people may be extra hairless, I don’t know.

Don’t worry vinnk, they’ll come out with a wiishave soon enough
TakaM - 04.02.08 11:06 am
Lose, not loose.
You’re not “very” hairy, just hairy, Vinnk. And if it bothers you so much you could always shave your chest.
You look better. I’m glad to see this went better than planned for you. Determination does a lot huh? You can even see it in your face. Congrats.
Nice dress. It’s really pretty.
Boots - 04.02.08 11:13 am
Nice work man, you really shaped up all right, and moreso, you’ve convinced me that “yes” I do want to get Wii Fit. You can really tell around your face that you’ve lost body fat overall, its instantly apparent and you just look slimmer. Added muscle and overall fitness is great too. A confidence booster I bet, for sure.
I can’t wait to try this out now, especially since the “fitness room” in my new apartment complex really sucks. Thanks for the great posts.
Goob - 04.02.08 11:15 am
You look GREAT!! I agree with the guest at your wedding, you do look like a different person. Looking at the pictures you posted made me believe 10 lbs and toning up makes a big difference. I do have a question though; did you religiously work out every day?
Vida - 04.02.08 11:17 am
Whoa, did WiiFit comes with those cool glasses? Congrats man, tales of your fitness progress and marriage have been impressive and fun to read.
Animagnum - 04.02.08 11:20 am
Hairy is good. James Bond is hairy!
And don´t you dare shaving you chest or something like that!
That´s crazy talk and leads to a very pimply vicious circle! ^^
Anyway, thank you for this interesting and inspiring experiment. I can understand your enthusiasm, as I have also lost weight (more than 20kg) last year, and never felt prouder or more satisfied of myself than during that period.
Keep up the good work and Mazal tov to the newlyweds!
BbB - 04.02.08 11:41 am
Boots: The proper spelling is “loose”, not “lose”.
And Vinnk, your 4cr family is VERY proud. *sniff*
Mitch - 04.02.08 11:59 am
love the tux! good going with WiiFit. i’ll have to talk the wifey in on that one.
lamartherevenger - 04.02.08 12:09 pm
whats this about loose and lose?
i dont know where it started, but to clarify
to lose is to lose something, like to lose pounds
loose is to loosen the belt as its too tight
loose not, lose the briefcase, etc…
waltermh - 04.02.08 12:26 pm
@Boots
Ah, in the first paragraph. OK. Fixed.
Vinnk - 04.02.08 12:38 pm
Good stuff!!
And to think, all this from…a video game? haha.
Awesome that the timing worked so well with your wedding. Just make sure to keep the weight off! There is a tendency to gain more weight when you are married.
Josh Bujanda - 04.02.08 12:42 pm
Whoa kay. Awesome, I wonder if these results are going to get out over the web and maybe itno mainstream media! Certaintly makes me just a bit more excited to get WiiFit. Nintendo PR may be contacting you soon to get this story spread for the American release! Awesome (authentic) Japanese setting for your wedding.
Stuffed - 04.02.08 1:31 pm
Congratulations Vinnk! You made some serious progress. The 10 lbs isn’t so impressive until you look at the pictures, because your body has drastically changed.
And I think you got taller
rbelmont - 04.02.08 1:50 pm
Thse befre and after pictures just aren’t as impressive as the ones they always show on infomercials. You’ve got to get a tan a hair cut and some awesome lighting
. Anyways, congratulations on the bod and the wedding.
peshue - 04.02.08 2:16 pm
Wow! That’s amazing! It’s phenominal the difference in how your clothes fit in the before and after photos. But most importantly, it’s great to hear that you feel better about yourself and that you have more energy. That’s the same kind of things I was noticing when I was doing a similar Let’s Yoga experiment.
Your wedding photo is lovely, you two make a very attractive couple.
jgoreham - 04.02.08 2:59 pm
Congratulations on your Wii Fit success, as well as your recent marriage to your lovely wife! I was so very glad to read that you gave YOURSELF credit for the weight loss, with Wii Fit being a nice facilitator. I plan on getting Wii Fit - it’ll be part of an overall lifestyle change for me to get back to my pre-marriage weight. Thanks, Vinnk, and enjoy that honeymoon!
NeoGutsman - 04.02.08 3:05 pm
Wow man thanks so much! I have been waiting for this final post. What an enlightening thing to do: We all obviously really appreciate it. Congrats to you and your new wife! You obviously must be really happy together. Again, I want to encourage you to keep posting your Wii Fit journals. It’s really interesting man!
troy - 04.02.08 3:23 pm
congrats!
gzd - 04.02.08 3:23 pm
Congrats from your friends over at gameonnintendo.com! We are genuinely happy for you and thanks for the awesome updates on Wii Fit!
Game On - 04.02.08 4:20 pm
Watching the progress was really interesting and in all honesty when I saw those before and after pictures my mouth literally fell open and expelled a loud “WOW!” 10 pounds may not seem like a lot on paper but it sure looks like a lot off the body. I truly hope you can keep the work going successfully and that your pride and confidence continue too grow. Congratulations. Oh and you do not have to worry about those “topless” photos, you look fine even in your before
(P.S. you should send this story to Nintendo or something, they would eat that stuff up)
Rampart - 04.02.08 5:08 pm
Please keep doing the daily log it really made me want wiifit a lot more im going to try and do more than 35hrs in 7 weeks hopefully i cab get result like you. You sure are a lot thinner

Kareem - 04.02.08 5:40 pm
Hi there! Great job! I will buy Wii Fit on 25 April, I am very thin BUT with a little “relaxed” belly ’cause i stay sit down a lot during the day… so my question is: You think it works also to increase parts where i am very thin (read no muscles)? Thanks!
FlaWiio - 04.02.08 5:55 pm
Congrats on your wedding and I sure hope you have a bright future.
Thanks for the experiment and I must tell you something. You are not that hairy (ok maybe you are in Japan, but I guess your average for a caucasian) Nothing wax can’t take car of
)
Anyway, this is amazing and it really proves once again that just doing a few exercises actually makes you aware of your body and what affects it. I’m getting this when it came out (if i don’t my girlfriend will anyway!)
Stained - 04.02.08 6:11 pm
Thanks for the credits in the story Vinnk

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if I should mention you and the other guys by name, but you were most certainly a ton of help to me during these 7 weeks.
Thanks again.
Vinnk - 04.02.08 8:46 pm
VINNK. Congratulations, and pretty fucking kick ass. Someone should send this to Nintendo, stat.
Shiro786 - 04.02.08 9:14 pm
Well Vinnk, I’m happy that you put up the before and after pictures. I know that it might not be the most comfortable thing to do, but you doing that did indeed provide visual proof for many out there.
Yes, maybe your posture in the before picture wasn’t the best, and the food in ya did factor in, but even with taking those things into consideration, I can see that you did loose a lot of weight and have a higher chest.
Believe me, as a personal trainer and martial artist, I know when someone’s shape has changed (it’s very easy to see in the chest; between your shoulders/pits and nipples, you’re packing some heat!) and yours most definitely has.
It’s good to know that your wife and you will be using it after the honeymoon, which by the way, I hope you enjoy, and yeah, monthly updates are a great idea…just imagine how fit you’ll be by the time the game comes out in the US.
Take it easy, and thank you for putting up my April 1st, 2008 article, on the “Nintendo Wii Wifi Connection Headset”. See you later.
Paul Gale - 04.02.08 10:11 pm
Vinnk, I’m a big fan of the site and pretty much lurk every day. I love your wii fit updates, I’d love to see how your continued results go.

You should add a digg link for this article. I don’t really know how it works, but you should.
Chairhome - 04.03.08 10:58 am
His posture improved a lot!
Azel - 04.03.08 12:08 pm
Most impressive.
Your complexion has improved a lot too, don’t you think? You went from pale and pinkish to healthy-looking.
I have one question though : do the haircut and facial hair have anything to do with your gaining self-esteem and confidence? Because it sure looks like it. You didn’t seem to take care of your beard and hair before, but you now look much cleaner and nicer. Congratulations again.
I plan to buy Wii Fit sometime after the European release, but I hope I won’t really lose weight, I’m already awfully light and skinny. I just hope I’ll have a better time looking at myself in the mirror and that I will feel as you good as you do ^^.
Berutoron - 04.03.08 12:49 pm
Amazing job. You know, I’ve read that toning muscles actually improves posture as the muscles reinforce proper bone alignment. That could certainly explain your “after” pics showing you standing very straight. Notice how your shoulders no longer droop down and how your back is not hunched over? I think you should credit that to your routine as well.
Nick - 04.04.08 12:55 am
You’re the man.
Watarai - 04.04.08 1:59 pm
This is what I’ve been waiting for.
I’m sold on Wii Fit.

well done!
blx - 04.05.08 10:17 pm
Just wanted to say that you look fantastic. Also, congrats on the marriage!
Dave Park - 04.06.08 9:42 pm
@Berutoron
Little late answering here but the change in complexion is probably more due to the weather changes between when Vinnk started and when he finished. At the end of February here the weather is cold, miserable, and generally sucky. But suddenly in March everything starts blooming and it gets very comfortably warm very fast. So people go outside more…
Peso - 04.06.08 10:22 pm
@PESO: thanks for your comment.
Still, don’t you think that weather alone couldn’t have done this to his complexion? I mean, his face is red on the before picture, that’s got to be a health problem :p.
Berutoron - 04.08.08 10:31 am
he plays well.

Congratulations on the amazing results and wedding!
While 10 pounds doesn’t seem like much, the pictures speak for themselves! I won’t be surprised if you replaced another 10kg of fat with pure dense muscle!
Consider me sold on Wii Fit.
yjs - 04.13.08 2:10 am
Thank you for putting forth the effort and posting the results, there can never be too many stories about how a completely managable amount of excercise can improve every aspect of a persons life.
Hoax - 04.16.08 1:43 pm
Nicely done, the results are very noticeable in the picture - under the chin, thinner legs, etc. As you say it’s not the Wii that made you lose weight, it was your motivation and the tools you used to acheive your goal.
I’ve been wanting to try out the Fit as my gym schedule has grown a little stale and progress from that routine has slowed after losing the first 20 pounds. It’s great to see the product is worth a try as one of the many tools for weightloss.
Congrats, and keep up the good work.
JL - 04.16.08 2:25 pm
Please get Wii Fit you disgust nerds so we normal people won’t have to see your pasty asses in the gym.
Beefcake - 04.16.08 2:30 pm
Just out of curiosity I took that side topless before and after shot and did a quick overlay to check out your posture, and there wasn’t really a whole lot of difference, good job, don’t sell yourself short.
vince - 04.16.08 3:05 pm
You should let us know how your wife does! I think that it’s great for you, but typically it’s a lot easier for guys to lose more weight quickly than it is for females, so I would be interested in seeing compared results!
cheryl - 04.16.08 3:27 pm
Congratulations! And congratulations on your fitness odyssey too. And thanks a lot, you answered a lot of the questions I had about WiiFit.
By the way, if you think you are *very * hairy, think again. I have two friends who have to shave all the way down their neck to the top of their chest to keep it from flowing over their collars.
All the best to you and your new family.
Don - 04.16.08 3:50 pm
Nice, but you should start lifting as well. You could have made a lot more progress by now.
Liface - 04.16.08 4:42 pm
You mentioned your change in posture as a being potentially deceiving in one of those photos; I would suggest that in tightening your core through all those balance exercises, you have probably improved your posture as well.
Also (and I apologize if I missed this in an earlier comment), do you plan on branching out into other types of fitness programs? You portrayed Wii Fit at something that helped you to maintain focus especially in the beginning of your experiment, but as it progressed the game itself seemed to become, if not ancillary, then little more than a vehicle for your dramatically-increased motivation. Later you make the observation that you could possibly see further and more dramatic gains if you stepped off the balance board (so to speak). I started running/weight training regimen about three months ago and can relate to the sense of pride and renewed energy that you express, so I ask this question in the hope that you will consider taking the new and improved you out into the wi(i)der world.
Congratulations to you and your wife!
Nick - 04.16.08 4:44 pm
Dude….that hair is nothing. We have one hairless roommate (damn asians!), one about as bad as you, and two WAY worse. Don’t feel bad.
Plus some women like the hairiness. It means they’re a *real* man.
Looks like some pretty big changes there. Your fat loss is quite impressive. Hope you keep up with it - a healthy body is something to strive for =)
Chris - 04.16.08 6:09 pm
If you think you’re hairy, you haven’t met some of the men I know. Great post, though, thanks for being brave enough to share all of this with us!
Tygress - 04.16.08 6:56 pm
If you think you’re hairy, you haven’t met some of the men I know. I would *never* consider you hairy. Great post, though, thanks for being brave enough to share all of this with us!
Tygress - 04.16.08 6:57 pm
Don’t know if you’re still reading these comments, but I thought I’d share. Last year I had a similar experience. I’m in my early 30’s, and hadn’t been to the doctor for a full physical in about 10 years. I decided to get the works, and the results were surprising. I knew I was somewhat overweight, but I felt I was otherwise in pretty good health. When my blood work came back it told a different story. My cholesterol level was over 260 (200 is considered elevated), and my blood sugar level was a little high as well. I decided then and there to make some major changes in my eating and exercising habits.
I started working out daily. I have an eliptical trainer, so I would do 20-30 minutes of “running” and then do several sets of sit-ups and/or push-ups. I also cut a lot of the rich, fatty foods out of my diet and reduced my carb intake considerably. Instead I ate a lot more lean protein and fresh vegetables.
The results were astonishing. Over a three month period, I lost a total of 35 pounds. My cholesterol dropped to 168 (bad cholesterol down, good cholesterol up), and my blood sugar dropped to normal levels. And the physical changes were just as significant. Like you, I had to buy a smaller belt. The jeans that had been kind of tight a few months earlier were now like wearing a sack. I felt stronger, healthier, more energetic.
Admittedly, since then, I’ve slacked off a bit. I started a new job, my wife went back to work, and my son started going to daycare. My available free time shrank, and as a result, I stopped working out as much. Then flu season hit, and my son started bringing home every virus known to mankind, so it seems like I’ve been sick every other week since October. It’s hard to exercise when you’re trying not to cough up a major organ. Over the holidays, I slipped on my eating habits and gained back some of the weight I’d lost. I’m still in much better shape than I was before I started, but I’ve noticed my waistline expanding again.
The good news is that your experiment has inspired me to get back on the wagon. I’m finally feeling better health wise and we seem to have gotten into a pretty good routine. I just promised myself that when I get home tonight, I’m going to do at least 20 minutes on the eliptical. So congrats on your succuss, on your marriage, and good luck with keeping it up!

“very hairy man”?!
What the hell are you complaining about man?!
On a more serious note though, congratulations! It really goes to show how much of a difference regular exercise can make in your daily life. It did take a lot of guts to post those pictures up there too (as it would for anyone), and I think you’ve done well to commit to this and malee a huge positive lifestyle change. Keep it up, and be very proud of yourself and what you’ve achieved!
Congratulations on the wedding too; beautiful. Thanks for sharing this story with us all

Congratulations,
This is coming from a Divison 1 NCAA college wrestler: very good job on your journey to fintness. It is great to see that you are taking pride in yourself and benefitting your mind, body and spirit.

Great job!
I have to reiterate what almost everyone else here said about what an inspiration this is to people. Even for those of us that work out regularly this provides a fresh incentive to keep up the hard work. Thanks again and congrats on the wedding, very nice.
mussbus - 04.17.08 12:31 am
As much as I’d like to believe in those pictures…it looks like you were sticking your gut out in the ‘before’, and sucking it in in the ‘after’. Although I do noticeably see some difference none-the-less….more games for the wii fit and i’m sold.
Anonymous - 04.17.08 12:37 am
very good job you are the first person online who pushes an exercise regimen that a) seems particularly sane and possible for anyone, and b) doesn’t make the person doing the exersizing seem like a total and complete douche. furthermore congrats on your wedding and your awesome suit.

Yes, I am still reading these comments. Excellent job with your program.

You weren’t wearing glasses in the first pic. Did WiiFit make your eyesight worse?
Nathan - 04.17.08 2:37 am
I detest the gym as it’s usually incredibly dull but love using the Wii everyday with my WiiSports.
Will probably pick one of these bad boys up as soon as they hit Australian shores on May 8th.
Darren Oliver - 04.17.08 2:59 am
Inspiring.
I think I’ll be grabbing Wii fit next month.
I’ve gotten a bit pudgy over the last few years, I think this will definitely help motivate me. Thanks for the story.
Kirb - 04.17.08 3:14 am
There’s no such thing as ‘a diet’. Diet is what you eat. If you temporarily change your diet, your weight will fluctuate as your body settles into the new routine. If you eat more healthily over a decent period of time without changing your exercise routine, you will lose weight until your body finds a new equilibrium.
bob - 04.17.08 7:05 am
Keep it going, the thing with activity is that it just keeps on working. In the past, I didn’t do wiifit, I just walked for 2 hours a day lost went from 117kg to 97kg in 3 months.
After surpassing the target weight in the set time frame, I have kept it up for a year now and am at a “healthy for height” 88kg.
Dieting is only for people too silly to get off their butts

New from Nintendo, the geniuses who brought you Cooking Mama and Cooking Mama 2 comes the global sensation: Cooking Mama 3: Wife Life (tagline “Make me a sandwich!”)
lol i’m kidding.
NuVanDibe - 04.17.08 9:46 am
Hey Vinnk,
Congrats on completing the regime… Sticking to it is always the hardest part.
As a semi pro athlete, I can say you’re pretty well an amazing case. The weight loss in the period is nice, but the muscle gain looks pretty substantial. Especially in the chest, you can se in the side shots that you had almost no chest muscle at all, but now you have a sizeable pair of man breasts (of the good kind!!) Its like you moved the beer gut up 20 centimetres. Also you can see that your shoulders squared up a lot and your nipples moved up. All very good signs. Don’t tell me you can’t do more than 25 - 30 press-ups in a row now!
You mentioned getting some plans of getting a fat percentage scale at some stage, did you ever do that?
Finally a note on the “love handles” I wouldn’t expect these to go away, ever. The size of yours are actually very normal, they depend on body shape more as you get down to reasonable weight.
I used to weigh in at almost 120 Kg when I lost a year to injury, now down to a casual 105, I’m always curious to notice, no matter how thin I get, I always have that little bulge…
Congrats again, keep it up.
Muklin.
Muklin - 04.17.08 9:57 am
Nice one I wish I hadn’t spent £250 on a personal trainer back in November! nevermind at least I know the wii fit works!
Congratulations on the wedding

I’m glad that this worked for you. Me personally, I’m sticking with Dance Dance Revolution’s exercise format.

your the reason i preordered a wii-fit… not nintendo.
jeremy - 04.17.08 3:59 pm
結婚おめでとぅございます!
買えなきゃならない!自分で頑張らないとダ メだわ。Like you said, just doing situps/pushups/running isn’t great for the unmotivated. Hopefully the Wii can help budge that unmotivatedness right on down the road
Congrats on the weight loss. That’d be great if it motivates you to exercise more. Have to say that your experiment will probably cause me to to buy one now
お疲れ様でした!
Fried Toast - 04.17.08 4:23 pm
Congrats brother. It’s always cool to see people, regardless of not actually knowing them, achieve what they wanted to achieve.
And another congratulations on the marriage. May good fortune grace your love for each other.
Kudos, friend.
Montanna - 04.17.08 4:58 pm
That is indeed impressive, congrats. Since you said you ride a bike but don’t get an upper body workout from it, might I suggest you try to ride harder? The advantage to bike excercize is that it is time-efficient because you’re also transporting yourself. It might require a better bike to feel confident at higher speeds, but in the long run you might find the capital expense worth it. In my experience, bike riding alone, for less than half an hour a day, maintains my biceps and lats such that I can do 10 pull-ups. This is probably dependent on riding a road bike hard in the drops, though. For comparison, with dedicated bicep excercises, I can get to 14-15 pull-ups. Any kind of biking is useless for abs, pecs, delts, and triceps. Most bikes only work glut’s and quads substantially. Toeclips (cages used with street shoes) allow you to work your shins and make it easier to work your calves. Step up to clipless pedals and shoes and you can work hamstrings, and work everything else better.
Incidentally, that’s a frock coat, not a trench coat. Tailcoats and morning coats are more common at weddings, from what I read. Probably jackets too, for those less interested in formality.
J.R. - 04.17.08 5:29 pm
Congratulations! When Wii Fit is released in North America, I plan to try the same plan as you, so thanks for the inspiration!
I have a question for you, though, that’s quite unrelated to weight loss: In the seven week span, how often did you need to change the four batteries in the Wii Balance Board? (and did it come with batteries initially?) An average of 45 minutes a day for 49 days makes it seem like there must have been at least one switch of the batteries (but then, I have no idea how much power the board consumes).
Thanks in advance.
Claytron - 04.17.08 7:09 pm
Congratulations dude, both on the health improvement and the getting-married bit.
Good luck. : )
Laura - 04.17.08 7:52 pm
Okay, coming from a single mom, NOT computer or game savvy. My techy brother sent me your link. I have always said, “I will NEVER allow video games in my home.” BUT I bought my 3 kids a Wii because the activity pushed me over the fence.
I also really wanted Wii Fit when it comes to US. NOW, that I’ve read your article, I am inspired to do this myself. I am going straight from this post to research how to get Wii Fit the day it releases. CONGRATULATIONS, and THANK YOU for providing what seems a “realistic” and fairly honest analysis.
THANK YOU
Red Wortham - 04.17.08 7:57 pm

What a wonderful wedding photo! I love the cut of your tux. I was thinking it looks more “Pride and Prejudice” than “The Matrix”. Naturally, your wife’s dress is beautiful too. I’m particularly fond of the veil.
Anyway, congrats on the weight loss. I think WiiFit will be a great game if it gets even a few people to become more aware of their body. (Well, maybe not a great GAME but a great something or other.)
Jessie - 04.18.08 4:13 am
Great Job! I really like that jacket.
Matias - 04.18.08 6:31 am
brother, you don’t have no idea what “very hairy” means.
congrats on the experiment and the wedding!
cb - 04.18.08 8:25 pm
You lost 5 kilograms in 7 weeks, and you’re sucking your gut in for the photos.
Realname, Notmy - 04.19.08 11:49 am
Dude. You rock.
Nice experiment, well-executed. I especially liked your use of a ‘control,’ in the way you didn’t alter your diet AND your exercise regimen at the same time. Nice. And your practicality, too: you worked within your pre-wedding lifestyle, instead of trying to cut things out. Kudos, Dude! Kudos!
Looking forward to Wii Fit’s debut here in the States.
–Weaver
PS: Love the wedding pic. You both look great!!!
Weaver - 04.19.08 10:40 pm
Yes, he could have lost a lot more weight and gained a lot more muscle in 7 weeks on an exercise program.. but that wasn’t the point. I think becoming motivated and seeing how what he eats affects him is the important part.
Now he knows there are very nice benefits to be had by sticking to it.. so I think he could succeed with ‘regular’ fitness stuff. He should add in some lifting and aerobic exercise (running, biking hard, workout videos, whatever) to the wiifit. I think he’d do very well
Cid - 04.21.08 2:34 am
Wonderful, just wonderful!
Thank you for the demonstration, and congratulations on the wedding!
Ed - 04.21.08 3:56 am
Looks like you put on some glasses and didn’t push your gut out as far as you could.
Nate - 04.21.08 3:52 pm
4 kilograms is not much :/
You can lose way more by jogging.
BTW: Congratz.
Deer - 04.21.08 5:37 pm
great reading, thanks for posting that experiment. I have to wait another two weeks for my pre ordered Wiifit in NZ and was getting down hearted over hearing reports that it was too easy not effective and just a toy. Your posts have given me faith in my purchase.I know what you mean about bike riding. I used to ride my bike everyday in Japan and it kept my legs in great shape but nothing else really. I think it actually made my beer gut look worse in some ways.
Congrats on getting married. Im getting married next year. I hope I can slim down a bit by then.
Mark - 04.22.08 4:39 pm
I don’t want to be a groupie about this and casually jump on the band wagon, however I’ve just stumbled across your blog tonight.
I wouldn’t be overly motivated to exercise either and have been monitoring reports on Wii Fit over last few weeks to see what it might offer me.
I have to say I’m truely inspired by your progress.
I must also point out that this is the 1st time I’ve ever left comments on a web page which is testament to how inspired I feel having read your blog.
It’s clearly taken a lot of determination to exercise and log your results.
Fantastic results. Highly impressed by the before and after shots.
Incredible progress. Thanks for sharing it.

Why did your skin change color, also why did you comb your hair and change your glasses in the after photos.

Hope mine arrives in the post tomorrow in time for the UK’s launch date!

Wow! I’ve been looking for something to get rid of my love handles, I backed out of pre-ordering it because it looks gimicky, but my brother went ahead and pre-ordered. It should arrive tomorrow, I think I’ll try that, you look amazing!
ell - 04.24.08 12:49 pm
Being a bit “porky” I stumbled over your site after buying the wi-fit today so I could see if anyone had shared their own experiences. You have done exactly that and I thank you deeply - you have given me plenty of motivation to kick start my battle of the bulge tonight!
Thanks mate, you are a credit to humanity!!

I was thinking of getting the Wii fit once I get the money. Now I really want to get it.
I’m so happy for you. 10 pounds is a HUGE difference when it comes to fat. Besides, in gaining muscle, you’ll burn more calories on top of your exercising. That’s awesome! Keep up the good work!
Amanda - 04.25.08 11:49 pm
Dude, you are seriously not that hairy!
Ro - 04.27.08 6:35 am
Thanks for this nice experiment
Martin - 04.27.08 4:56 pm
First off, congratulations. Every aspect of this project looks like a success. I actually kind of wish you’d do more daily updates - they’re surprisingly fun and inspiring to read.
Personally, I’ve been taking a once-a-week Kung Fu class this semester, and I’ve felt some improvements, but after comparing my results to your daily fitness plan, I’m starting to feel like I haven’t been dedicated enough. I mean, having a Wii Fit game to tell me how I’m doing would be neat, but mostly I just need to get my act together.
I’m kind of looking forward to getting Wii Fit when it comes out here in the States, now. Congrats on a successful plan - but I have to wonder how much the determination to blog about your experiment helped you maintain it. Perhaps I should do the same!
