I remember seeing the early Star Wars movies and marveling at the cool computer animation they had going on. Sometimes I still look back on those effects and marvel at not only the fact that they seemed ahead of their time, but also at how well they hold up. Sometimes it’s the simplest executions and effects that really stand out as working the best. Over at Motionographer they highlight Larry Cuba and his effects work on the films. Check out the YouTube vid and you will instantly be transported back to childhood.

I was never all that impressed by the animations. They were well designed, but beyond tat there wasn’t really anything groundbreaking about them to me. Although it was awfully cool that star wars arcade had nearly identical graphics.

I think the old Star Wars movies look fantastic compared to movies today. Because of things like this, but mostly because of the awesome puppets. Puppet Yoda > CGI Yoda by a long shot.

Amazing.
And you’re right Belmont…tactile, physical objects just work so much better than overblown CG. The Battle of Endor is light years beyond (that’s a pun, you see) anything in the new trilogy.

Go into DOS to watch watch an ASCII version of Star Wars!
Type “telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl” into any DOS window to make it start.
