The other games I’ve covered in Fun For Free have been short but fun gameplay experiences. However, today I bring you a full-sized game filled to the brim with different modes, ships, weapons, and other unlockables.

Return to Sector 9 (or R2S9) is a Game Maker game created by Pug Fugly Games. It’s a space shooter with nine different gameplay modes, good graphics and sound, and a professional presentation.

While a few of the modes are similar, there are ones that stand out like like the awesome Jellyfish mode and the puzzle-like Doomball mode. The core gameplay remains unchanged for the most part (there are some exceptions). You move your ship, which constantly shoots when enemies are around, with the arrow keys and turn it with the Z and X keys. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s a lot of fun once you do.

In addition to the different modes there are also fifteen different ships in the game that all have unlockable colors and extra ammo for their unique special weapons. You are also awarded medals for how well you did in the various modes, and there is a “Stats” screen that keeps track of everything. And finally, if you want to show your highscores to the world, there is are online leaderboards which you can send your highscores to.
[edit] About the Vista compatibility, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I couldn’t get it to work on my computer at home with Vista, but some people can. If you have Vista, you should right-click on the game, choose properties, then compatibility and choose Windows XP SP2.

So it’s like… Asteroids combined with Galaga, sort of?

Ignore the “not Vista compatible” screenshot. I had no problem running it in Vista x64 (as a limited user no less!).

The page at the download link seems to be broken.

Never mind… I guess I caught it at a bad time the first time.
