I’m more than half finished with my experiment at this point (the last post will be on March 25th) and so far I have been very pleased with the results. For the last two weeks my weight decreased and my enthusiasm went up. Wii Fit is as much a part of my day now as breakfast. Sure I could get through the day without it, but I’d feel like I was missing something. I am sure the same feeling could be felt with any exercise program but for me if it’s not a video game it’s not going to hold my interest long enough for me to discover that.
Again this week, I increased the amount of time I spent with Wii Fit. My workout itself has also continued to evolve. You can read about it in my journal entries below. Of course like every week these are followed by the actual weigh-in. I am no longer as concerned about my actual weight, but more interested in the changes of my body shape and my overall fitness level. Still, for those watching numbers, they are found at the end.

Day 22 (February 26th)
BMI: 24.86
Body Age: 31
In game playing time: 50 minutes
Actual playing time: 58 minutes
Another milestone was reached today. Since my BMI dropped below 25, Wii Fit no longer considers me obese. My Mii did a happy little dance and seemed very proud. I will feel sorry for it if my BMI jumps up again tomorrow, but for now my Mii and I are enjoying the feeling of progress.
My actual workout today was arm exercises and step aerobics. Each day I do the push-ups I am able to do more. I can feel that my strength is improving but the reason for more push-ups is also because I have the motivation to do a few extra each time. Those 2 or 3 extra ones after the point where I want to give up are, I’m told, the most important ones.
Since I started increasing my time spent on yoga I am improving in that area as well. My balance is still not great but it is far less awful. I even have 4 star (out of 4) ratings on some of the poses. I will continue to warm up with yoga exercises this week.
Day 23 (February 27th)
BMI: 25.18
Body Age: 25
In game playing time: 51 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour 2 minutes
Today I had to teach a night class so I didn’t eat dinner until around 9:30. After dinner I did Wii Fit. It is a lot harder to do abdominal exercises right after eating, but I still got a pretty good workout.
As I have done for the last few days, I did the step aerobics again today. There is really not much to it. I just watch my Mii on the screen and step when and where it does. After a while it becomes downright hypnotic. I decided to play music today while I did it. It is actually possible to watch television while you do the step aerobics since the speaker in the microphone keeps the rhythm for you and tells you when to change position. But I am a bit too easily distracted and I don’t know if I’m ready for that level of multitasking quite yet.
My BMI went back over 25 today and my Mii looked surprised. I was worried this would happen (especially since I did Wii Fit right after dinner). But as my fiancée told me, it’s not so important what my BMI is as long as I am healthy. Muscle weighs more than fat. I am not going to pretend that I have suddenly developed rippling muscles, because I haven’t, but the flab that I do have is getting noticeably firmer. I am thinking of getting one of those scales that can tell me my percentage of body fat. Then I can see if that’s really what’s going on or just my wishful thinking.
Day 24 (February 28th)
BMI: 25.05
Body (balance) Age: 22
In game playing time: 46 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour, 2 minutes
My fiancée was over today as I did Wii Fit. It was very nice to have her there for support and to find out a little about how I actually look when I am doing the exercises. I can never actually see myself doing the various activities since I have no mirror in my living room. It turns out that my form is far from perfect on some of the exercises. She helped me to be able to have my body position look the same as the trainer on the TV screen. It was really helpful.

She also put in a 30-minute workout today. Of course in those 30 minutes she was able to beat my best scores for about 4 of the Yoga poses. I have a long way to go before I have balance like her.
The hardest exercise in the game is one made to test core body strength. Basically you lay your forearms on the Wii board and hold your body something resembling the “up” position of a push-up. And just hold that pose for as long as you can. [A reader wrote to tell me that in English this exercise is known as “the plank”] It sounds easy, but it is not. The first time I did it I could only hold the pose about 40 seconds. I am up to 158 seconds right now. It doesn’t sound like much, but at the end of those 3 minutes, I am sweating up a storm. I am not exactly sure how this exercise benefits the body but it seems to exercise the entire torso. I love the feeling after I have finished doing it, but the exercise itself is murder. My fiancée is a very fit person but she could only take about 60 seconds of it. I wonder if my body is getting stronger or simply if my threshold for pain is increasing.
Day 25 (February 29th)
BMI: 24.86
Balance Age: 23
I game playing time: 45 minutes
Actual playing time: 52 minutes
Today was a very long and hard day. When it finally came time to do Wii Fit I really wasn’t in the mood to exercise. All I wanted to do was go to bed. But I did it anyway because if I start slacking now it will be easier to neglect it in the future and my routine could fall apart.
I did my abdominal exercises and usual squats. After the hard training exercises I ended with aerobics. Despite going into the workout with a bad attitude, at around the 20 minute point I started getting into the workout more. It actually made me feel better. In the end I’m glad I did Wii Fit today.
Day 26 (March 1st)
BMI: 25.05
Balance Age: 30
In game playing time: 1 hour
Actual playing time: 1 hour 12 minutes
When I started Wii Fit today there were cherry blossoms falling on the menu screen. The season for cherry blossoms is coming soon and it’s a cute touch. Actually there are a lot of cute things in this game. The little animations the Miis do are adorable. But anyway, back to the serious business of training.
I felt like putting in a full hour today so I did. Once again it felt great. Yesterday I didn’t really feel like training but today I was looking forward to it. I did my push-ups, squats, yoga and mini-games as usual and then I decided to put in a full half hour of step aerobics. But today rather than just watching my avatar going up and down I put in a Futurama DVD and watched that while I exercised. It made the time go by faster and with the Wii remote speaker I was able to keep in step most of the time, but for some reason it wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be. I guess that I actually enjoy focusing on the workout more than doing something else to fill the time. As boring as it sounds, I actually like watching the counter go down and being totally focused on what my body is doing.
When I first started Wii Fit I would get soreness in my arms and my back. My arms still get sore after nights when I do pushups but my back and legs have been fine. As I mentioned before, I actually enjoy the soreness the next day. I wonder if I should be doing a harder workout on the days I do abs, but I don’t really know how to work my stomach more. Maybe I will just add more repetitions.

Day 27 (March 2nd)
BMI: 25.05
Balance Age: 24
In game playing time: 1 hour 1 minute
Actual playing time: 1 hour 20 minutes
A word of advice; the time directly after a large meal is not ideally suited for intense abdominal exercises. I learned this the hard way. Tomorrow is my birthday but since I have a night class on Monday nights my fiancée and I celebrated tonight at our favorite restaurant. We went to the restaurant rather late in the evening and ate very rich food. When I got home I needed to start Wii Fit right away so that I could get to sleep at a reasonable hour.
Doing sit-ups with a full stomach is not something I want to be doing often. Come to think of it, some of my weight loss can probably be attributed to this very fact. If I know that I am going to be doing abdominal Wii Fit exercises in the evening I will try to avoid having a full stomach. So I finish eating for the day earlier than I used to and I avoid evening snacks. Really I don’t miss them much either. The more I do Wii Fit and the more progress I make the less desire I have to snack. Eating junk food is something that makes me happy. But progressing with my exercise program also makes me feel happy. Some nights the snack still wins out but lately I often find that adding an extra 20 minutes to my workout is just as good.
As for the workout tonight, push-ups were difficult due to being full of food. Because of this I decided to try something I thought would be less intense. The mini-games. I had played the hula-hoop game only 2 or 3 times before. Always on the easy mode. At some point I decided that it was not really very beneficial since it was so easy. I can admit now that I was very wrong. When I play the game for 6 or 10 straight minutes (I did both today) it is a real workout. It’s a lot harder than the step aerobics or boxing and I can feel it in my stomach and knees. It was really difficult but it felt good. It would probably have felt even better if I didn’t have a gut full of food at the time spinning around. I am going to try to incorporate this game into my daily exercises and see how it works.
It seems my daily routine is getting longer each week. I don’t know if I will be able to continue putting this much time into Wii Fit as my wedding approaches, but for now I think it is time well spent.
I need to get a new belt or at least add a new notch to my remaining one. The last notch has become too loose. For the last few years, if I forgot to wear a belt I often didn’t notice. My slacks would stay up fine. With most pairs of pants/trousers the belt was mostly for decoration. Now I need it. It feels great to be able to say that.
Day 28 (March 3rd)
BMI: 24.92
Balance Age: 29
In game playing time: 46 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour
I had to teach a night class tonight so I started Wii Fit pretty late again. When I came home I discovered that my fiancée had left me some birthday presents. They were workout clothes, and really sharp looking ones at that. I never really had much of a need for such things before since I never really worked out much and if I did a ratty T-shirt and a pair of shorts were fine. By giving me these gifts, I guess it showed that, in my future-wife’s eyes, I was actually serious about getting in shape.
When I started Wii Fit today, the anthropomorphic Wii balance board was wearing a party hat and wished me a happy birthday. As I mentioned before it’s the little touches that I like in Wii Fit.
It was arm exercises again today. This is my love/hate day. Push-ups and other arm exercises are difficult for me and I have to work very hard to get passing scores on the training exercises. But, the feeling after my workout is great. And the soreness the next day is, strange as it sounds, my reward. Also, my arms are getting bigger, and that shocks me. Even back when I was thin, I was also scrawny. I never really had much in the way of muscles. And don’t get me wrong, I still have arms like twigs but recently they are slightly thicker twigs.
Week 4 Wrap-up
Total time spent this week: 6 hours 10 minutes
Total time since beginning the experiment: 19 hours 35 minutes
Current weight: 77.2 kg (171.7 lbs)
Total weight change this week: -.7 kg (1.6 lbs)
Total weight change: -2.8 kg (-6.2 lbs)
This week, like the last, saw a small loss of weight. But when dealing with changes this small, they can often be considered “statistical noise” rather than solid evidence. It is normal for your body weight to go up and down during the course of the day. I have tried to reduce this is much as possible by always weighing in at around the same time, but of course there will always be fluctuations. What matters to me more then the small weight decrease is the fact that I seem to be maintaining.
I have tried fitness programs before as well as dieting. And all of these things have worked for me in the short term. It’s very possible to drop 5 pounds in a week with a strict diet or a new weight loss program. The problem I have always found is the fact that that weight always slingshots back. Right now I feel less like I am loosing weight and more like I am gaining something else. Actually, I feel I have gained many things. I feel stronger, I have a much better self-image, and I have more energy at work. Also according to my friends and co-workers, I am looking better.
Could it simply be the placebo effect? Is wanting Wii Fit to work, altering my perception? Maybe. It’s still a bit too early to draw any conclusions. However it is getting close to the point where it doesn’t matter to me anymore. I am feeling good about myself and I am doing something other than sitting on my butt watching TV. If that is a placebo at work, so be it.
I am wondering now when I will start to plateau. I have seen weight losses and fitness gains for the last few weeks, but at some point it is going to level off. I wonder what weight and shape I will be when that happens. As always I will keep writing about it daily, so feel free to give it a read on the main page. I would like also to tank all the people who have left me comments, suggestions, encouragement and feedback. It is all really appreciated and has helped me to keep going and see this project through.

Vinnk, my gym teacher once told me “You *will not* lose weight only by working out. Working out changes your body muscular mass, which might increase your basal metabolism and calorie burning, but the only way to lose weight is to control your eating habits.”
Ever since, I had to stop going to the gym because of Real Life issues, but I decided to put his words to test.
For the past 2 months I haven’t made any kind of exercise other than eventually walking some blocks and waking up earlier in the morning (and hence being awake for a longer time during the day, increasing the energy I spend); what I did that made a difference was to *cease* any carb ingestion after 3 PM. It’s OK to have some bread during the morning and some pasta or potatoes during lunch, just don’t overdo it. Personally, I’m having a nice fruit and yoghurt plus cereal breakfast almost every morning, and having more salad during lunch — thankfully, I happen to like salad and fruit.
That was it.
In two months time (from Christmas on) I’ve lost 10kg (no kidding!). And I repeat, that was while not doing any out-of-the-ordinary efforts (other than playing No More Heroes), certainly not working out.
Weight loss by mere increase of basal metabolism is bound to be slow, and quite frankly, your progress is astonishing. It means that you didn’t increase your food intake as a response to the energy you’re spending. Keep up the excellent work!! But just in case you’re really gunning for some serious weight loss, the secret is on the mouth, where it’s always been.

Great news, Vinnk. I’m happy once again to hear that you’re really enjoying Wii Fit. In the end, it’s always more important if you actually feel better, stronger, are happier with your image, etc., than what the scale reads.
In your case though, up to this point, you’ve achieved both. Losing 6.2 pounds in 4 weeks is an average of 1.5 pounds a week, and at the same time, you’re more capable at exercising and look better.
By the way, Happy Birthday!
I think that the best present you could have given yourself is a new body, and that you did. Keep it up. Oh, and maybe take a picture of yourself now, so at the 8 week mark, you can compare the two.

@Mean
hm, sounds like a thing I’d like to try.. but what do you eat for dinner? D: And if you do have training, is it a bad idea to try your eating habit? (e.g reduced amount of energy or something)
Erki - 03.04.08 12:01 pm
Hey Vinnk. I just wanted to leave a little note of encouragement of how awesome I think it is that you’ve grown dedicated to this program. I’m sure your fiance is quite proud of you and hopefully she’ll get to enjoy your progress on the honeymoon.
Swift - 03.04.08 12:53 pm
Nice work Vinnk.
@Mean
I am also interested in what you have been eating for dinner for 2 months. My goal is to lose about 10kg by the summer, so this diet definitely sounds promising.
Josh Bujanda - 03.04.08 3:14 pm
Well I’ve lost 10kg since early january… mostly by eating healthily. I lost 5kg in about two weeks from exercising every morning for 30 minutes, but then school took over and I didn’t have enough time to exercise from overtiredness. From then on it was pretty slow, up until me being my current weight. I suggest both exercising and eating healthily, it is really the fastest way to lose weight. Plus, you need both. Exercising increases muscle mass, so your weight will not change as drastically (though you will be healthy), and just eating healthily does not make you lose certain fat, for instance fat between your organs.
luet - 03.04.08 4:58 pm
From what I’ve read here and in your other posts I think I’m going to encourage my parents to buy WiiFit (they bought a Wii for WiiSports and Big Brain) when it comes out.
It’s interesting though, there is pretty much NOTHING this ‘game’ does that you couldn’t do with just a scale, marble and, notebook but the feedback and encouragement the device itself gives the user may be a part of the key to getting people involved with exercise programs; which leads me to wonder something.
Vinnk, if there was a night you couldn’t use WiiFit (power outage, travel, etc.) would you still do your exercising to maintain what momentum you’ve gathered now?
RoboSheep - 03.04.08 6:30 pm

Dr Drew says 90% of your diet is exercise. Or was it the other way around?
mizzle - 03.04.08 7:24 pm
ExcellentExcellent stuff here, as always I have to say well done Vinnk.
I can’t really give you much advice this week because you’re starting to become used to everything that you’re doing.
The ‘no carbs in the evening’ thing is good, but I find if you don’t eat carbs you just get hungrier faster and you will probably end up eating more in the evening anyway because of the absence of carbs.
Like I said in another post, consider buying some dumbbells to compliment your workout.
Good stuff buddy!
Devon - 03.04.08 8:07 pm
Your journalling this experience has basically sold me on Wii Fit; my wife and I are both interested in the idea now, and I plan to pick it up when it arrives in the states. Thank you for doing this!

@Erki
Noticing I have been overeating for the past several years due to anxiety and stress was a fundamental realisation. From that moment on, I tried to refrain from snacking by impulse. When I saw that I was indeed starting to lose weight, things kind of snapped in, and then came the decision about the carbs.
So at night I’m kind of repeating the lunch routine, i.e., salad, fruit and some protein. I happen to like fish better than chicken or meat, so I tend to have fish for lunch and dinner quite often. Sometimes I even break my “no carbs in the evening” rule and make myself a sandwich of whole grains bread, turkey ham and low fat cheese. Immutable rules WILL make you give up on the “diet”. Just use your own discretion and be honest to yourself. The goal of losing weight is yours, after all.
BTW, IMHO, doing exercises in the evening is not a great idea. If you’re able to, try to work out during the morning time, which makes the energy point kind of mute since you’re “allowed” to have your carbs then. This happens to be (or will be soon, hopefully) the situation I’m in, so YMMV, adapt those tips to fit your lifestyle.
@Erki and Josh
Please, don’t even try. It’s not a “prescribed” diet and I can’t promise any results other than the anecdotal evidence that it Worked For Me(TM). Make a list of the “healthy” food that you enjoy and of the “unhealthy” food that you can live without. Make an effort to eat increasingly more of the former and less of the latter. And anxiety is the #1 enemy, so maybe having an appointment with your physician is a good idea. I found out that the more healthy my diet was, the less I felt the urge for unscheduled snacks. When your body receives the right nutrients, the feeling of hunger will naturally decrease. I was quite surprised to see it happening to me, to be honest
@Luet
I agree with every word you wrote, and I’m definitely not suggesting that there’s a way to circumvent exercising oneself, only that I happened to be in an unfortunate situation where I couldn’t go to the gym. I’m quite looking forward to joining it again, now that I’m lighter and have a lot of disposition to get myself in shape. And there are always the incentive of watching girls in workout clothes
@Devon
There’s truth in your words, hence me emphasising the fact that it worked for *me* and I can’t promise anything else to anyone else. Natural carbs from fruits, vegetables and whole grains are OK, I’m only “banning” processed and highly caloric food like white bread, fat-rich dairy, fried stuff and the kind of stuff that makes you drool when you visit a bakery, and even then only after a certain point in the evening. Evidently, use your discretion: having 10 pieces of cake in the morning and fasting in the evening will obviously backfire.
If you’re craving for something sweet, having a banana or some mango will do you much better than chocolate. And if you’re still craving for food in the night, a bowl of milk and cereal (the kind you find on a natural products shop made of whole cereal (with the bran), not those in colourful boxes encrusted with sugar and additives. Or maybe some oat meal.
It’s all about modifying your eating habits while respecting your tastes, mainly by preferring eating the healthy foods that you happen to like and sometimes trying something new.
Good luck for all!

Great tips & pointers. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do the whole “no carbs after a certain time,” but I definitely need to start eating better. Who knew I could find all this helpful info on a video game site? lol.

@MEAN
Sounds like you found a diet that really works for you. I have always failed at diets. I can handle them for about a week before I break down. Maybe I was always too strict.
If I was only trying to loose weight, I agree a diet would probably be faster but I am also trying to build muscle and hopefully become healthier in general.
Thank you for sharing your tips with our readers.

lose is the opposite of win, find and gain

@Mean:
Your coach is not quite right. If you want your body fat to drop really low while maintaining your muscle mass, a good diet is a must.
But: You will loose weight (lots of that) just by doing a workout. Loosing weight isn’t magic. It’s all about the calories that you eat vs. the calories that you spent.
@Vinnk:
“I am thinking of getting one of those scales that can tell me my percentage of body fat”
Don’t. Just measure the circumference of you waist. Same result (you’ll know if you’ve lost fat) and much cheaper. Just make sure that you measure it more or less at the same time and under the same circumstances.
I don’t think there are any “pull” exercises in Wii-Fit, right? If there aren’t you should try to do some pull-ups every other day. If you can#t do regular pull-ups, lay on your back below a table, grab the rim of the table and do pull ups like this. Just make sure the table is more heavy than you are or have somebody sit on the table
This will train your back muscles and your biceps. In combination with the Wii Fit exercises you should have covered most larger muscles (push-ups for pecs and triceps, knee bends for your quads and then the pull-ups for your back).
Oh, and it seems that your body adjusts pretty fast. Which is normally a good thing, but now it seems like the exercises are getting too easy
The problem is, that this means the intensity of your training is lowering. This results in longer workouts. And while it will make you “fitter” it will also decrease the rate of your weight loss.
Right now, you’re developing your endurance, esp. the muscle
endurance. Think of the Wii-fit as your personal aerobics-course. Problem is, that those courses are not suited to loose weight over a longer period of time (That’s why you can find some not-quite-that-slim-persons who have been doing aerobics for quite some time).
So, you need to find some ways to make it harder again.
Like placing your feet on a stool when doing push-ups. Take a water bottle in each hand (as a dumb-bell replacement) when doing the step aerobics. Use one of these aerobic-rubber tubes when doing the knee bends (or shift weight to one leg, so you gradually switch to make the knee bends on one side. Just make sure that you have something to in reach you can use for balance if needed).
And you should always repeat until you can’t do anymore repetitions. And that means until your muscle fails, not until your brain wants you to give up
Wow, long post. Anyway, keep up the work-out and the diaries.

@Mean:
Welcome to the wonderful world of dieting-nightmare. Your current diet will result in a nice weight loss. Problem is, that quite a lot of this weight will be muscle mass, not fat. At the same time your metabolism will slow down more and more. Esp. because of your no-carbs-after-n-o’clock rule.
Now, whenever you eat carbs, you’ll get an insuline spike. Which will result in an increased fat accumulation. That’s the reason why it’s advisable to eat several small meals over the day instead of 3 (or less) larger ones.
Combined with your general reduction of calorie intake, it will make sure that body thinks it needs to reduce the amount of energy burnt and to create energy depots, since food is sparse. Oh, and energy depots= fat. Reduced metabolism=you need to diet even more to still loose weight… and this is the typical dieting-death-spiral.
I’d like to congratulate you to your weight loss, but I have to warn you that chances are good it will backfire.

Hey, I’m not *that* bone-headed. That’s precisely the reason I’m looking forward to re-joining the gym
And rest assured, I still have some smaller meals during the day, mainly fruit-based. I tend to prefer those with more fibres, like oranges, mangoes and the like.
Still, thanks a lot for the advice and for the compliment!

Ah, don’t forget the part where I mentioned that “(n)atural carbs from fruits, vegetables and whole grains are OK, I’m only “banning” processed and highly caloric food like white bread, fat-rich dairy, fried stuff and the kind of stuff that makes you drool when you visit a bakery, and even then only after a certain point in the evening. Isn’t it lovely when one quotes oneself?
mean - 03.05.08 7:25 am
Sorry, I misunderstood you then. I though you banned those carbs in general and all carbs after a certain daytime.
Normally, the “don’t eat X after Y o’clock” is just a way to reduce the total daily intake of X without saying that you can’t eat X anymore.
From a diet point of view, it doesn’t really matter. Some studies even suggest that eating carbs in the evening is beneficial.
Basically, all that counts for your average person is the daily intake and your daily energy need. If you’re an athlete your needs may shift depending on your sport (and may shift here even inside a season).
If you ensure that your energy intake slightly exceeds what you need to maintain your weight your metabolism shouldn’t be impacted that much.
If your advice was: “Eat more healthy and not more than you need,” then I simply misunderstood your posts.
Peace?
