Last week I lost weight with Wii Fit. But like most weight loss programs, the real challenge is keeping it off. As you burn off fat and build muscle it is even possible to gain weight while still getting healthy. I knew all of these things before going into week 3 and I was prepared for the fact that the first weight loss might have been too good to be true.
Still, I trained longer this week than either of the first two weeks and I met some personal goals. But I can’t chart feelings, only numbers. So did the weight go up or down? Read on to check out my daily journal entries and find out what the scale told me this week.

Day 15 (February 19th)
BMI: 25.18
Body Age: 22
In game playing time: 47 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour 3 minutes
My back is still fine today. In fact I was able to complete the sit-ups endurance mode twice today (100 sit-up each). Unfortunately since I took focus off my back for a number of days my arms were sore this morning. But I guess I can say it’s a “good kind of sore”. It’s not a soreness that annoys me it is one that tells me that I actually worked hard enough to be sore. It’s a feeling I haven’t had in years. And call me strange, but I like it.
Something that does annoy me however deals with the Wii Fit board. I think it would be great if it had a side button. One of the only things I don’t like about the game is that after each exercise the game displays several screens of information giving you your score, tips, etc. To get past these screens you need to pick up the Wii remote and press the “A” button. Every single time. I just wish there was a side button on the balance board that I could hit with my foot instead of constantly getting off the board to get the remote. But then again maybe that is all part of the exercise. Still I wish I didn’t have to break up my workout to fetch it.
Day 16 (February 20th)
BMI: 25.02
Body Age: 24
In game playing time: 42 minutes
Actual playing time: 58 minutes
Today’s workout felt great and was satisfying on many levels. First of all I was able to work up a really good sweat today, which always feels great. Second, I met a goal earlier than expected. As I mentioned last week, I have never in my life been able to do 20 proper push-ups. The most I was ever able to do was about 15, and that was back in Jr. high School I set a goal to be able to do 20 of them by the end of February. Today I did 21. I know it’s a very small accomplishment but I am happy for myself. It was a hurdle that I have never been able to overcome before.
On the suggestion of some comments I received on my “Week 2” post, I did not do sit-ups today. I will now try to alternate between arm and abdominal exercise in order to give each muscle group time to rest. I will however, try to do some aerobic activity each day. Today I did the boxing, which is still my favorite of the mini-games.
Day 17 (February 21st)
BMI: 25.18
Body Age: 26
In game playing time: 31
Actual playing time: 42 minutes
My training focused on abdominal and aerobic exercise today. To tell the truth since my arms weren’t all that sore I considered doing some push-ups as well. But I decided to play it safe and save them for tomorrow.
The first 40 sit-ups are the hardest I have discovered. When I am doing the endurance mode and get to about 25 I think to myself “I am never going to be able to finish this” and at 35 I think “I should give up and do some other exercise for a while”. However, if I just keep powering through I eventually hit “the zone” and it feels like I can almost do them forever. When you get to 100 the endurance mode automatically ends, but lately I have been like “That’s all you got? Give me some more!” When I started Wii Fit 2 and a half weeks ago I could do about 25.
I now have 3 or 4 stars on most of the Yoga activities. Still a lot of room for improvement in my form but according to the game my balance is getting a lot better. I still think I should do more yoga. It doesn’t feel as rewarding as doing 20 push-ups or 25 squats, but it is probably fairly important to my overall fitness level.
It turns out that when you crack 10 hours of actual workout time, the little “anthropomorphic time counter thing that looks like a pig” changes color. It seems happy about the process and I am happy for it.
Day 18 (February 22nd)
BMI: 25.31
Body Age: 33
In game playing time: 28 minutes
Actual playing time: 39 minutes
Today I had a small party at my house so I started Wii Fit pretty late. I was only able to put in 28 minutes before the clock rolled past midnight; Still, I think I put in a pretty good workout today. I focused on my arms and legs with push-ups and squats. I feel bad for not getting any aerobic exercise into this workout but I hope to make up for that tomorrow.
I made it to level 5 on the “marble rolling” mini-game. At the advice of one of the commenters on my “week 2” post, I did it the game in a squatted position. It is very difficult to hold that position for so long and because of that it is better exercise. I hear that there are 8 levels to the marble game and I will try to do them all. For the most part I have been avoiding the balance games because I felt they were of little use (more diversions than exercises) but I am now finding out that if done correctly, they can be fairly effective as well.
At the dinner party I got a few comments from friends saying I looked thinner. I am not sure if they were just being nice or not but it made me feel good. Also by the time the party was over I think another person was thinking about buying a balance board. Below are two of my friends trying the game out.

Day 19 (February 23rd)
BMI: 25.37
Body Age: 31
In game playing time: 37 minutes
Actual playing time 50 minutes
This weekend has been difficult from a fitness perspective. Yesterday I hosted a party and today my girlfriend’s friends from Tokyo visited. We went to a restaurant and stayed for several hours all of which were spent eating. When I finally got home it was hard to get into the workout. I was full and tired.
As I was eating at the restaurant, I was calculating in my head how many Wii Fit minutes I would have to put in to “make up” for the evening. I never really looked at my eating habits like that before. I would just eat. Now I feel that it I eat too much I am wasting my progress.
I was tired but I still put in 37 minutes and was able to do 200 sit-ups. It’s won’t make up for all the food I ate, but It made me feel a little better than if I had just gone to bed.
No part of my body has been sore for a few days. It’s goods that it doesn’t hurt but in a way the soreness is also a sign that the exercise is working. I think I am going to increase the difficulty of my workout in the future. As they say, “no pain no gain”.
Day 20 (February 24th)
BMI: 25.12
Body Age: 26
In game playing time: 1 hour
Actual playing time: 1 hour 13 minutes
Perhaps it is out of guilt for the last 2 days, but today I put in my longest Wii Fit session so far. It felt wonderful! I mentioned last week that there were still 2 mini-games I hadn’t unlocked. Well, one of them became available today. It was a very simple step aerobics activity. For this activity I just have to move along with my Mii on the screen. The Wii remote speaker acts as a metronome for keeping time and you can speed up or slow down the tempo with the up and down arrows. As I said it’s very simplistic but also very good for working up a sweat.
I did push-ups again today. I set a new personal record of 23. I also did the normal leg exercises and squats. Only 4 minutes of yoga today but I was so involved in the other training I kind of forgot about it. I am going to aim to have at least 20% of my workout be yoga.
The longer I use Wii Fit the more I enjoy it. The first 20 minutes of my workout are always the worst. My body is stiff and not used to working out. But around the half hour mark I really begin to enjoy what I am doing.
Day 21 (February 25th)
BMI: 25.15
Body Age: 31
In game playing time: 1 hour
Actual playing time 1 hour 7 minutes
I put in another full hour today. I started with yoga since I am trying to add more into my routine. Then I did 20 minutes of step aerobics, which actually went by really quickly. Since I did arm exercises yesterday, I did my set of 100 sit-ups today. After that was the usual course of leg exercises and squats. For fun I decided to finish it all up with a round of the boxing game.
Since I have become much more used to the exercises, I no longer have to concentrate so hard on watching the television screen. I now find that during the repetitive exercises like the sit-ups or step aerobics my mind begins wandering. I don’t see this as a bad thing. When I am at work, watching TV, reading, etc., my mind focuses on the task or leisure at hand and I don’t often have much time to just let my mind wander and think about whatever it wants. That’s why it often takes me so long to fall asleep. In my bed, in the dark I finally have time to collect my thoughts for the day. I can sometimes lie there for hours. The last few nights however, I have fallen asleep minutes after hitting the pillow. Maybe it is because during my training time I have time to think or maybe it simply the fact that since I am exercising harder I am just tired. Either way, I like it.
Week 3 Wrap-up
Total time spent this week: 5 hours 5 minutes
Total time since beginning the experiment: 13 hours 25 minutes
Current weight: 77.9 kg (171.7 lbs)
Total weight change this week: -.9 kg (about 2 lbs)
Total weight change: -2.1 kg (-4.6 lbs)
Not only did my weight not go back up, it actually continued to go down. Also, recently I have started seeing some tangible evidence of the weight loss. Several pairs of my jeans are now getting loose around the waist and one pair that I haven’t been able to wear for 3 years fits me again.
The weight loss is great, however the real benefit that I have found is the increase in strength and general sense of well being I get from doing a daily exercise program. For the first time, I am feeling a little bit of pride for my body. If I never lose another gram, but am able to keep these feelings, then “The Great Experiment” will be a success.
But I have heard people say that the first 5 pounds are the easiest. It will probably get harder from here on and the progress will become less apparent. It will be interesting to see what happens in the weeks to come. Right now I am really enjoying my daily workout, but is it going to become boring after the first month? Is the weight loss only a temporary effect? I’m looking forward to finding out, hope you are too.

Wow, it seems like the game is more effective than I had expected. A part of that might be discipline in keeping up the routine too, but that goes with any exercise. Awesome job Vinnk.

Congratulations on losing another 2 pounds, Vinnk. Also, the 3rd sentence in this week’s story (about losing fat, gaining muscle, maintaining a similar weight, but most importantly, improving your health) was a great one.
(Sound like me from Week 2 and that’s cool).
I’m happy to see that you’re actually enjoying yourself. One of the things I always tell my clients, and I’ll tell you, is this:
Feeling the muscle pain is great in two ways. 1) It’s mentally satisfying, knowing that the pain you’re feeling represents real progress going towards your goals. And 2) The pain feels good! For me, there’s always something very satisfying of that pain. I don’t care for getting a paper cut or bumping my knee into a cabinet, but muscle pain raging through my chest? Yes please! It’s just empowering and I think it’s terrific that you’re srarting to see it in this light.
When you stop feeling pain, your body in that area is becoming more sufficient, so then, it’s a good feeling from a different perspective.
As for being tight in the beginning of your workouts, I’d recommend stretching. And to help burn more fat, do some cardio at the end (that jogging game looks pretty sweet).
As for your final questions, no, I don’t think it’ll become boring. After a while you could change up routines, put your feet on a chair when doing push ups, which by the way, congratulations on hitting 23, listen to music while jogging, make a new, difficult goal, be it the number of push ups or anything else going way up, etc.
And no, the weight loss won’t be temporary. You’ll eventually have to step it up and work out at different times of the day to trick your body, but you’ll still lose fat…and gain muscle.
Have a great one.

Awesome work, I check here every day now. It’s actually made me want to start reading your other blog posts and your views on a lot of things in the gaming market.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I started reading your articles from when you first started and until now - I feel that you’re attitude is more positive in general… in just the way that you write your articles. I don’t know if that’s the case, or if it’s just the illusion of wanting to notice that (plus i haven’t been here for a long time before) however I think Wii Fit is doing good things for your life.
Keep up the good work.
Like Paul above said your body will eventually adapt to the work out that you’re doing and you’ll need to change some things up.
Some of the Strength Excercises that focus on Legs involve you pushing your hands out forward or upwards and it is a good idea to complement this workout by holding 2x 5kg dumbells - but I don’t know if that will really fit in with the ‘Wii Fit’ Experiment because then you are using more than just Wii Fit to lose weight.
Also, if you keep this up your BMR will stay much higher all the time, and if you eat healthy and less calories than you’re BMR is burning through in a day then you’ll continue to drop weight, that’s the key to weight loss. It’s very good that you’re building your muscles more and more - but it will take increased weight eventually otherwise they will become used to it and your gains (muscle wise) will stop.
Devon - 02.26.08 6:27 pm
I might consider doing this.
Shiro786 - 02.26.08 9:04 pm
Not to get your spirits down, but water weight goes fast if you sweat a lot. Then again, I haven’t read everything so you may have already considered it. Keep it up though!

Push it to the limit Vinnk!

“I have heard people say that the first 5 pounds are the easiest”
That’s true if you’re dieting. Since you’re decreasing your weight via training, you should see a steady decrease in body fat for a longer period. You gain more muscle, which increases you daily energy consumption (the muscles need more energy than body fat) so by exercising you burn calories twice - once during the actual exercise, and then everyday thereafter because you got stronger.
And the fun thing is: it makes you feel great
So, have fun exercising and keep it up. I think your progress is great, and I enjoy reading your workout diaries.

Guys and gals, once again thhank you for all of your encouragement.
Paul Gale and Devon, I look forward to reading your comments every week. And as I have the last few weeks, I will take your words to heart.

Good stuff Vinnk, good to know that we’re heard.
Have you managed to finish the ball balancing game down to level 8 while squatted the whole time yet?
Did you see what I mean about how ball breaker that exercise is?
Devon - 02.27.08 7:33 pm
Neato! You can see the LEDs in the sensor bar in that picture.
I just took a huge dump and lost 2 pounds. Watch out world, I’m on my way to being thin!

@Devon
Still haven’t beat level 7 but I can totally see what you mean.
Vinnk - 02.27.08 10:45 pm
Vinnk,
I was researching Wii Fit online and came across your pages. Thanks so much for going to the effort with this and taking the time to put up your daily results.
You have convinced me to get this when it comes out in Europe after just 3 weeks of your efforts.
I struggle to keep up momentum when I go to the gym, I last a few weeks at best and the shear boredom of running on a treadmill and pushing weights is enough to put me off at the slightest distraction. Now I have a newborn to keep my wife and I busy and so working from home I really think this will help me attain the concentration levels needed to get back into some daily fitness. I don’t expect it to be a cure all for my health but I can see that it is a great first step motivator that will show results and encourage me to then add outside exercise into the mix as I get healthier and stronger after a few months.
I think like you said also that you kind of feel guilty when you eat bad food knowing that you are taking steps backward after putting in a lot of effort that will also help with altering my diet to more healthy options and less saturated junk food which quite frankly I like but know is bad for me.
Keep up the good work, your an inspiration.
Warm regards from Ireland
Chris Elsom - 02.28.08 6:13 am
Well Vinnk, the feeling is mutual. Thanks for keeping things fresh.
Paul Gale - 02.28.08 12:58 pm
Noticed on your 27th of Feb blog that you said you wanted to buy the ‘Body Fat Scales’.
These don’t work - they do the same BMI calculation as Wii Fit does… it should give you roughly the same reading as your BMI in Wii Fit - DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
Body fat cannot be calculated by scales.
The only true way to test body fat is to get some body fat calipers… these aren’t very expensive, but they pinch locations on your body and you record what the body fat percentage under the skin in that area says (they will come with instructions). You would then measure all of these points once a week and you can note the changes, this is the only way to judge body fat.
Don’t worry yourself over BMI it’s look and feel that’s more important, one reason why I don’t particularly like that Wii Fit focuses on BMI.
Devon - 02.28.08 8:53 pm
u know, when i take a crap i lose 0.9KG.
it’s a placebo, u think ur losing weight so ur really happy
good job though keep it up
lol - 02.28.08 10:58 pm
@LOL
I realize there are of course daily fluctuations. Before starting Wii Fit my weight fluctuated between 80-82 kg. It hasn’t returned to that level. At least not yet.
Of course I have not ruled out a placebo effect. Recently other people, such as my co-workers who don’t know I’m doing this experiment have commented that I look slimmer. Maybe it is just the positive mental attitude that I have developed from Wii Fit has fooled them into thinking I have lost wieght. It’s indeed possible.
This is why I intend to keep the experiment going. Because once I get to the point where I have lost, say, 4kg (assuming I ever DO get to that point) it will be hard to explain it away by saying that going to the bathroom was the major contributer.
If it never drops more than this, you may indeed be right.
Vinnk - 02.29.08 2:23 am
Perhaps a New and Shiny Vinnk is on the horizon for the world to see? I’ve been lurking for the past few months on this site charting your progress and it’s really awesome to see that Wii Fit is doing wonders for you.
Ah, if this had been around when we were at UWEC.
I will be cheering you on from the thawing expanse of Minnesota~
Cat - 02.29.08 10:05 pm
It looks like wii-fit will be the real Revolution (the original name of the Wii when it was a project), if it motivates hundreds of millions of people like it motivates you! The pants test is the most scientifically convincing; I hope wii-fit does not end costing you too much in new clothes!
The most human test of wii-fit is how you feel: that is very convincing as well! It may be like organic food for me: years after having started organic food, I do feel better in my mind, which I did not expect at all! Recently I saw a conference about Nutrition and Behavior which gave me keys to understand that, and it makes sense, since the brain eats, too (!):

About your girlfriend feeling dizzy when trying to play 3D games, maybe she could try to tell a very good and serious physiotherapist or chiropractor about it (I heard most chiropractors are no good, so it is hard to find a good one). I saw on a very serious health program on national public TV (not on an obscure cable channel!) that a 5-second manipulation of the upper part of the body can solve dizziness. Incredible but it really worked.
GuyDebord - 03.01.08 9:07 am
Great job, very inspirational. Keep it at. This is so promising to hear because if you don’t like your excise routine you won’t stick with it. I once heard “grown ups exercise and kids play”. They key is fun!
Good Luck!
Alex - 03.01.08 10:32 am
Neat.
SuperMax - 03.01.08 5:09 pm
Remember, don’t judge your progress on weight alone! How your clothes fit and how you feel are the best gauges of progress. You can easily GAIN when exercising, but still lose size. Keep with it!
dani - 03.02.08 5:06 am
Greetings from Sweden!
Let me get in line and say good job. Not only for the weightloss and personal goals achievements, but also for sticking with it even when it seems that the time does´nt exist. As for your girlfriends dizzyness when playing 3d games. Is she using glasses or lenses? My Girlfriend had these problems before and when she went to a “better” optician (yeah my spelling sucks but I hope you know what I mean) he told her that her lenses was all wrong. She changed them and have not had a single problem since. That was about 2.5 years ago. From a medical point of view it could also be the Hypophysis but since she seems to be quite normal weight I would be surprised if it was. Since a Hypophysis problem generally interfears the bodys natural fatburn process.
Looking forward to next weeks report
