My second week of daily Wii Fit training has come to a close. This week was a lot busier than the first so I am learning not only how to balance on the little white board, but also how to balance Wii Fit into my life.
After the first week I had lost no weight, but I was still very optimistic about the program. This week I have continued to build that positive mental attitude as you can read in the logs below. But is there any weight loss to go with it? Read more to find out.

Day 8 (February 12th)
BMI: 25.34
Body Age: 22
In game training time: 45 minutes
Actual playing time: 54 minutes
I have unlocked almost all of the exercises at this point. Some of the later ones can really be put into the “silly” category. For example one of the exercises has you lie down on the floor with the Wii remote pointed at the ceiling and you are to repeatedly stand up and fall back to the ground while shaking the remote as little as possible. It is perhaps good for leg training, but it really looks stupid.
Focusing more on yoga is starting to pay off. I am seeing definite improvement in my yoga poses. I really hope my balance is actually getting better and not that I am just learning how to trick the board.
As I begin my second week, I have decided to set a goal of unlocking the remaining exercises and mini-games (I have unlocked all of the yoga already). Once I have every exercise available I can start developing a good routine for myself.
Day 9 (February 13th)
BMI: 25.41
Body Age: 39
In game training time: 45 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour
Arm training was the focus today. For as long as I can remember I have had a hard time doing push-ups. I don’t think I have ever been able to do more than 15 proper push-ups in a row. I would watch films set in the military and hear the sergeant yell, “drop and give me twenty!” and I always thought to myself, “I couldn’t do that”. I have decided that by the end of this month I want to be able to do 20 in a row. If I can reach that goal, Wii Fit will have made some change in my life.
I did a bit of yoga today but I made the mistake of doing it after the arm training. It seems I have more trouble with balance after the harder training exercises. I used to always begin my workout with yoga. I should go back to that.

Turns out someone noticed my little project. The site Nintendo Wii Fanboy posted this story about it. I have to say I love the little Photoshop they did. With all this attention, I hope this experiment will be a success.
Day 10 (February 14th)
BMI: 25.37
Body Age: 34
In game playing time: 34 minutes
Actual playing time: 50 minutes
In addition to the focus on arm exercises I mentioned yesterday, I am also working my abs quite a bit. I do the endurance sit-ups every day now. You see, I am not exactly fat but the fat I do have has all decided to set up camp in my gut. My dad has the same problem. So do all the men on his side of the family. It might be my destiny (via DNA) to conform to this body shape, but I’d like to do all I can to prevent it. The balance board doesn’t really do much for the abdominal exercises (for example sit-ups); mostly it just counts for you. Still, it gives me the motivation to keep doing them. When I’m alone doing sit-ups I usually stop around 30-35, but for the last 5 workout sessions, I have done a daily set of 100.
I hate balancing on one leg. I just can’t seem to do it for more than about 20 seconds. On most of the yoga poses I have improved a lot over the last 10 days. But on any one-legged pose, just staying on the balance board is the main challenge. Definite room for improvement.
Today I unlocked my last general training exercise. Since I unlocked all of yoga last week that just leaves some mini-games. I should have everything available by the end of the week as planned.
Day 11 (February 15th)
BMI: 25.21
Body Age: 28
In game playing time: 13 minutes
Actual playing time: 24 minutes
For the first time since I started this experiment, I failed to put in 30+ minutes. The reason for this is that my girlfriend was visiting. I put in a bit of time while she watched and then she wanted to give the game a try. By the time she finished it was after midnight so I couldn’t put in any more time for the day.

She had a good time with the game. Once again I’ll say that it is fun to watch other people play and give them encouragement. It seems my fiancée has much better balance than me. It was her first time with various yoga poses and she got the same scores as me (or better). She wasn’t able to play the skiing mini-game because it makes her dizzy, for this reason she doesn’t play any 3D games.
I have to do an extra long workout tomorrow to make up for the lost time. I’m feeling weird for not putting in all my time today, like my day is missing something. I’ve never really felt that way about exercise before.
Day 12 (February 16th)
BMI: 25.15
Body Age: 28
In game playing time: 31 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour 3 minutes
Today I had a small dinner party at my house. Everyone wanted to try out Wii Fit. As I said in previous posts there is something fun about playing it in a group. However I really cannot recommend it as a party game. First of all everyone who wants to try it has to create a character, weight themselves (potentially embarrassing) and set fitness goals for a game they just want to try for the evening. This process takes about 10 minutes per person, which really does not give it a pick-up-and play feeling like Wii Sports or WarioWare. Also, once they make that character, most of the best mini-games need to be unlocked before they can try them. Still they enjoyed watching me put in my 31 minutes and gave me a lot of encouragement.
Perhaps due to the fact that I have been doing 100 sit-ups each day on Wii Fit, my back is really sore today. I am not sure why it is sore now after so many days of training. But I am giving the sit-ups a bit of a rest until it feels better. I focused a lot on arm exercises and step aerobics. They are fun to do and fun for others to watch.
Tomorrow I will try to get 45+ minutes in to make up for two days of fairly light workouts.
Day 13 (February 17th)
BMI: 25.31
Body Age: 23
In game playing time: 44 minutes
Actual playing time: 1 hour 6 minutes
My back is still sore so I did mostly aerobic and arm exercises again today. I have only 2 mini-games left to unlock and I’m not sure how to do it. I spent most of today’s workout playing various mini-games to get scores high enough t open the remaining two.
It turns out the mini-games are a lot of fun. But some of them don’t provide all that much in the way of actual exercise. Usually after about 20 minutes of what I consider “serious training” I will reward myself with one of these games. As I said they are fun, but if I am playing a game only for fun I would rather play something else.
I’m going to try to go back to my normal routine of sit-ups and push-ups tomorrow. The back pain is still a bit of a mystery but Wii Fit may not have caused it at all.
Day 14 (February 18th)
BMI: 25.41
Body Age: 29
In game playing time: 36 minutes
Actual playing time: 55 minutes
My back has returned to normal today and I began sit-ups again. It actually felt great to get back to them. Mini-games are fun but this actual training and working up a sweat is why I bought the game.
I wish that I had taken a picture of my arms before I started this experiment. It might be my imagination (probably is) but they look like they are getting a bit bigger. I do the push-ups every day and I am able to do more each day so it is possible my arms are getting stronger, but I never expected to see a physical change after only 2 weeks. But as I said it might be my imagination. I feel stronger these days so maybe I am trying to see things that aren’t there.
Week 2 Wrap-up
Total time spent this week: 4 hours 10 minutes
Total time since beginning the experiment: 8 hours 20 minutes
Current weight: 78.8 kg (173.7 lbs)
Total weight change this week: -1.2 kg (-2.3lbs)
Total weight change: -1.2 kg (-2.3lbs)
It’s not a big change but it’s a start. And even though I feel Wii Fit is helping just from how I feel day by day it is nice to have a number to put with that. But even if my eight had once again remained the same, I would still be very enthusiastic about Wii Fit. Since I started Wii Fit I have had more energy at work, higher self-esteem and a daily feeling of accomplishment. I think the same would be true of an exercise program. This is not a unique feature of Wii Fit. The difference, for me at least, is that this is the first program that I have not given up on. I am stoked to begin my 3rd week now and hoping that the weight doesn’t come back. Either way, I’ll be here to tell you all about it.

2.3lbs in one week isn’t to shabby.
When starting a exercise program it takes about two weeks or so to start seeing a difference.
I can’t wait to see what happens in a couple more weeks!

It would be better to take someone who was 20 lbs overweight and see what happens, if you’re going by weight loss and bmi.
bombzaway - 02.19.08 2:24 pm
Great job, Vinnk. Keep up the positive attitude and continue looking forward to your workouts. Also, I’ve got something that should be good news for you.
I don’t know if I told you this before or not, but in addition to being a videogame journalist, I’m also a Personal Trainer (I got my Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, in May, 2006) and I’m sure I know what’s happening to you.
You’re gaining muscle weight and losing body fat at the same time. 1 pound of fat takes up 2.2 times the space as muscle, so if your weight by some chance doesn’t change (like in your first week), don’t fret.
You’ll still be losing inches. I tell my clients this, all the time, and it’s both true, and reassuring that what you’re doing is beneficial to your health.
Here’s to your continued success. Take it easy, bud.

I’m going to suggest watching out on your push-up form if you’re getting back pain, improper push-ups can cause back pain just as easily as sit-ups, so if you’ve been doing alot of that for your arm work, it could be hurting you there. This is one of my concerns with the pad, does it count your push ups using the board itself? Perhaps try and raise your feet up to be level with the board then. How is the spread, I feel like the balance board would cause your hands to be too close together for proper push-ups (I realize there are variants with hands close, I do them myself, but a classic push up is usually a bit wider). I just have no idea how wide the board actually is, so I just have trouble picturing how it works with push ups exactly. Be sure you’re keeping your back straight and level (hence raising your feet, you may be bending it up or forward slightly awkwardly, creating some tension in places you wouldn’t expect. If you’re arching at all on the way up or down, you’re doing it wrong, essentially. Be sure to stretch both ways after your sets (maybe the yoga does this for you?), so you’re not compressing or over extending your spine.
If it’s just your lats hurting, it may not be a bad thing, just means your muscles are getting worked, but if it’s more in your bones and spine or even neck, it could mean posturing is way off. If anyone can add to what I’ve said or clarify if I got anything wrong, pleas do.
I’m no expert though, so perhaps look into this yourself elsewhere, I’m just a guy who has been exercising myself for years now on and off, and I’ve picked up some hints here and there. I’m excited about Wii Fit though, for sure, just for the original experience. Those ball rolling games look like fun too.

Oh, Vinnk! You don’t need to change for me. I love you just the way you are!
GoudaCheeseking - 02.19.08 5:55 pm
That is awesome that you actually lost weight.
The game continues to look more and more appealing.
Keep up the good work.
Josh Bujanda - 02.19.08 6:05 pm
Way to keep with it! And it’s encouraging that you lost weight, no matter how much.
Lukas - 02.19.08 6:24 pm
The back pain is just an indication that your core strength is low, which means that certain muscles are lagging behind when you are doing sit-ups.
I would suggest doing sit-ups every second day rather than every day, alternate those days with the push up days (unless you are finding that your muscles have had time to recover).
This back pain would likely continue if you do sit ups every day - the reason it happens is because certain muscles haven’t recovered fully and then the weaker muscles in your core and your back lag behind and cause pain when worked more. Little do most people know but doing crunches and sit ups (especially the Wii Fit way) work your back also.
Keep up the good work, and again if you would like to nutrition advice I would be happy to try and help with that.
I’m guessing that you didn’t eat as healthy as the rest of the week on Sunday? It’s interesting to see your BMI just back up on that day after a week of consistent loss. Keep up the good work!!! Surprising to see that just doing this is having such benefits to your daily life.
Remember though, you won’t always continue to keep feeling better and better - the only way you can do that is it exercise harder and harder

@All - Wow, you guys left some great comments. Thank you.
@Paul Gale - You continue to surprise me. You are a trainer too? Thank you for the encouragement.
@Goober - The board is bigger than it looks but it is slightly awkward because it is about 2 inches tall so the front of my body is higher up. I like your suggestion about raising my feet as well. That might help. I will keep everyone updated on various aches and pains.
@Devon - Thank you again for your comments. You are right on the money, on the weekends I often go out to restaurants or have a party. Good advice on alternating the exercises. I will start doing that this week.
Vinnk - 02.19.08 7:52 pm
That would suck to get dizzy from 3-D games, your gf has my condolences
siempre - 02.19.08 7:57 pm
@Siempre - Yeah, I agree. She couldn’t play Mario64DS or ExciteTruck with me. Strangely enough Super Mario Galaxy doesn’t bother her as much. She still can’t play it for very long but it doesn’t make her sick. She also can’t read on trains. My mom is the same way. I wonder if it is something that would go away with repeated exposure.
Vinnk - 02.19.08 8:05 pm
Keep going, dude.

Vinnk, what you will find if you are having a house party or dinner party on the weekend and you eat differently, you’re body will jump up on BMI for a day or two, but you will rocket back down in the coming days, and your progress will continue downward. Obviously your progress will be better if you can restrain your alcohol consumption (or remove it all together) during these parties. Food is not such a big issue, unless it’s heavily processed foods with lots of fat which slow the metabolism. Avoid fast food as much as possible if you can.
I said in the initial thread (before you started) that you don’t necessarily need to eat less, infact because you are working on your muscles so much (which is a very good thing) you may need to eat more in order to recover your muscles for the next day. Alternating situps and pushups is a good idea, keep doing that. I hope you’re doing squats and lunges as well? If you can keep it up try and work your legs every day, many people avoid legs but it’s great for increasing your BMR and muscle mass because there are such large muscles on your legs this can be quite important.
I’m following this every day, I hope that you will keep it up - you will have more interest than you realise from high up places - in fact I can almost guarantee that Iwata-san has viewed your page and is following it closely.
Devon - 02.20.08 7:46 pm
Also, a little bit more advice with Wii Fit, whenever you’re playing any of the balance games, bend your knees.
Check out the ball rolling game, and try and complete all 8 stages in a squatted position… Hopefully you’ll comment on this in one of your coming days and I’d like to hear how much it made you hurt… haha
This is a great workout because you require for your muscles to be flexed the whole time… I would be willing to bet you can’t do the whole 8 levels in your first few times with your legs bent the WHOLE time, even between stages.
Devon - 02.20.08 7:56 pm
Impressive! Keep it up!
jgoreham - 02.21.08 7:14 am
@Devon
Again, thank you for all the tips. Yeah, I am doing squats and leg exercises everyday.
So far on the marble game I can’t get past level 4 but I’ll try again using the squatted position you suggested.
Vinnk - 02.21.08 10:57 am
Interesting. I can’t wait to try this out for myself. I struggle with weight somewhat, and it would be nice to have a fun way to exercise in the house other than playing hockey in the basement. lol

Wow great blog, I have been reading it since week 1.
As a former obese person (now at goal weight for 2 years) I did my exercise at home with a treadmill I bought. It bored me silly, but I endured the workout knowing the goal was worth it. This WiiFit device seems to be so much more fun and even if you broke up the workouts to 2×20 or 30 minute sessions a day would be worth the effort.
Kudos to you for trying it and as for the whole eating mindset changing as well, I must say that did amaze me to read your thoughts on it. I’d be most interested to hear about your thoughts on core/abdominal strength after a few more weeks on the WiiFit, especially balance (those wobbly lines on the screen
)
Keep it up, I can’t wait to get my hands on a WiiFit later this year!
Stormstruk - 02.25.08 8:12 pm
Hey, your Wii Fit blog posts are great!
Just wondering, does the game actually tell you your weight?
Bobby - 02.26.08 1:47 am
Yes it does. Ad you can put a password on your account so others can’t see it if you are shy about it.
