I’m excited as can be for Factor 5’s upcoming Wii project(s), all the moreso because of the lingering Kid Icarus rumors. IGN caught up with studio head Julian Eggebrecht at DICE, and he ran his mouth a-plenty, possibly dropping some cryptic hints in the process. Excerpts:
“We’re going to try and do everything to outdo [all other graphics] on the platform.”
“The pointing [functionality] is probably the biggest innovation we’re working on right now.”
“The engine does everything the PS3 did and then some, quite frankly.”
Everything the PS3 did and then some? Whaa?? I can’t wait to find out what he means, but I have a feeling something was miscommunicated. Then again, you never know with Factor 5 — they might’ve found a way to make Wii 4D. Also of note, Eggebrecht mentions that his team ported Rebel Strike to Wii and that it’s a blast to play. Bargain release, please!

Heh, I couldn’t get ANYTHING out of that article. He says that the engine is a strong engine for flying games, but the game they are making isn’t flying.
Also, he hinted at a 3D Turrican game.

Factor 5 made Lair for the PS3, didn’t they? (I’d be happy for either game. I mean, Kid Icarus!)

Hey, Factor 5!
I’m still waiting for a new Turican!

I just don’t get anyone’s interest in this. This company has done essentially two types of games since its inception. They somehow managed to get even worse at the flying genre as time went on. Personally, I’ve NEVER understood why people like Turrican, but that’s another story.
Yet here we are again. An average at best developer in the gameplay department. These guys are the epitome of graphics over gameplay, a statement some diehard Nintendo fans are quick to toss at other platforms.
And people actually want them to touch beloved Nintendo franchises? Why? Kid Icarus doesn’t even make sense to me. Their on-foot components in Star Wars were outright terrible and Kid Icarus has almost nothing to do with flying at all. Given Miyamoto’s public dissing of previous 3rd party handling of Nintendo franchises not too long ago, that would be a surprise.
These guys have a good marketing department, I guess. I’m just not going to be surprised if whatever they make turns out to be mediocre at best. I really just don’t understand why anyone cares anymore.

Yeah, nothing but hot air and a lot of blah.
But then, it IS Factor 5, so we shouldn’t be disappointed.

LOL, I told you they were programming gods.
Really though, I see Factor 5 as a technology company more than a game studio (yes, I know they make games, and rather good ones at that). I look forward to them raising the technological bar for Wii games, both in audio and in visuals, even if the gameplay isn’t completely mindblowing. Among all the Wii games that tend to have subpar graphics, I think this might be a good thing.
Actually, I’d like to see Star Fox with Factor 5 behind it.

@Volt
They can do the graphics for it.
Treasure needs to do the gameplay.

Yeah, these guys do fantastic stuff with Graphics. Maybe they could get someone else to help them make the game fun though? I’d love to see them do a Wii title just to put to rest all the people complaining that Wii can’t do pretty games. Factor 5’s GCN stuff is still pretty impressive, especially considering the technology at hand, and the lame results everyone else traditionally got on the Cube. Bust the Wii out of it’s shovel-ware-sloppy graphics, and maybe other will follow suit. Not counting Nintendo of course, Galaxy, Smash, etc, all look awesome.

New Turrican would be sweet. I remember they mentioned Thornado (the sequel) something like 5 years ago…

@rbelmont: … Yeah. I’d much rather have that, come to think of it.

Hahaha, I think Thornado was supposed to come out much more than 5 years ago. I wrote an article about it while I was either a sophomore or junior in highschool, and I’ve been out of college for 2 years now. I do remember thinking that the concept art and the idea of Thornado seemed really cool though.
PixelHustler - 02.13.08 10:13 pm
They talked about Thornado back before Gamecube. I distinctly remember that.

Thanks for very interesting article. btw. I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. It’s interesting to read ideas, and observations from someone else’s point of view… makes you think more.
So please keep up the great work. Greetings.
