There’s little in this world that can get me as excited as Mario Kart Wii news (outside of Animal Crossing Wii news, anyway), and as such, this is a good day. The latest issue of Famitsu contains quite the MK blowout, with the following information revealed:
- Miis selectable as racers
- Full-fledged online, up to 12 players
- Weather Channel-like globe online interface
- 32 courses including 16 classics
- Customizable controls, GC pad option
- Rumored JP release date of 4/10
Check out the sweet-looking online interface here, and see all of the original info/pics for yourself at Kotaku and NeoGAF. If Japan really is getting the game in early April, then I’m guessing we’ll see it in North America sometime soon thereafter, which is definitely a lot better than the late 2008 release I’d come to suspect. Here’s hoping!

Miis, eh? A global challenge has officially been thrown down to see who’s the fastest Hitler.

16 tracks? I thought it was 16 new and 16 classics, same as MKDS and seemingly the standard for any future Mario Kart games.
SV - 02.07.08 12:33 am
I think it is. I think there are 16 hidden tracks or something.
HANDICAPS WILL KILL THIS GAME. That is my prediction.

Oo, a Bullet Bill bike! I wonder if you can customize the racing stats of your Mii, or if you’ll be choosing between vehicles ala Double Dash.

32 tracks, 16 of which are classic

typo fixed, thanks

Looks like they’ve been tightening up the graphics.
Mario Kart Wii is gonna rule!

I just want it to be fun.
As long as the weapon balancing and snaking do not appear, this new installment should be wonderful.
Howard Roark - 02.07.08 1:38 am
I swear, I’m the only person with a Wii who does not care about, under any circumstances, Miis. Their novelty wore off as soon as I was playing a game that wasn’t Wii Sports. It doesn’t bother me that much to see them getting in games like Mario & Sonic, and now this…but they just stick out like sore thumbs and it rather annoys me. It could be worse though…they could’ve been forced into Brawl.
Off-Topic ranting aside, the game looks incredible and I can’t wait for it.
Blue_Falcon - 02.07.08 1:46 am
Howard Roark, the whole point of Mario Kart is that the weapons are unbalanced. If you want a fair skill-based Nintendo racer, play F-Zero, as Mario Kart is just a casual racer (apart from time attacks, but these are still no comparison to F-Zero) that anyone can play for a bit of fun. But yeah, snaking definitely has to be taken out. Like most reasonable MK players I can do it no problem, but I choose not to, just as I choose not to use grenade launchers for easy kills in online FPS games for example, and don’t use snaking in F-Zero for that matter.

I really like how their redoing old track for new MK games now. I’d love to see some track from the original all done up in snazzy 3d, and that highway level from MK:DS
peshue - 02.07.08 2:29 am
I dunno blue_falcon, beating the snot outta mii’s woulda been cooler than the fightin alloys.
Lem - 02.07.08 4:04 am
12 player online and miis.
w00t.

I hope they make the courses longer. The tracks on MK for the Cube and DS were all really short. I miss some of the MK64 tracks where laps could take well over a minute.

As long as I don’t get wtfpwnd by people snaking EVERY race, I might have another reason beside ‘for ssbb’ for buying my Wii.

Baby Peach confirmed!

This game is going to rock. If it comes out before the Holiday season, I will be impressed.

Looks like the Wii will indeed pull a DS — no good games for like the first year and then the avalanche starts.
JDW - 02.07.08 10:44 am
Miis are great in every game, I really like the idea.
And, SV, Super Mario Kart was fair. You can have a skill-based game with crazy weapons and stuff, it doesn’t have to be either or. Mario Kart has just devolved into Mario Party Racing, where it really doesn’t matter how good you are, if you are lucky, then you will win.
rbelmont - 02.07.08 12:24 pm
Since the latest GCN incarnation of Mario Kart let me down, I’m curious to see how this game will be… But the GCN pad option leave me with the impression that the wheel will not be great. Anyway. Still looking forward to it. For the moment, Mario Kart DS is hands-down the best of the series.
i_am_error - 02.07.08 12:37 pm
Miis? Thats pretty gay.
theONE - 02.07.08 5:08 pm
You really shouldn’t be having homosexual thoughts aboat Miis.
You might want to see someone if that continues.
Kenofthedead - 02.07.08 6:23 pm
God, are they ever going to have voice chat on Wii while playing??
Carlos Pita - 02.08.08 2:08 pm
@ Carlos
Voice chat makes very little sense in a Mario Kart game…. unless said game is called “Mario Kart: Battlefront”.
@ the Nintendo Gods
Pleeeeaaaaase no snaking!
JohnnyC! - 02.08.08 5:18 pm
According to GoNintendo, snaking was confirmed to be in Mario Kart Wii.

Of course, I don’t really know if I should believe anything I see on the internet.
darsei - 02.08.08 6:46 pm
Miis. Finally. Fuck Nintendo know how to realise an idea too late.
