by Vinnk - 02.05.08

On the same day that I bought the game that hardcore Nintendo fans have been dying for, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I also bought Wii Fit, the “non-game” that everyone else is talking about. Originally, I was planning on giving it a try and then posting some impressions. However, as I was changing into my workout clothes, I noticed they no longer fit me. This made me take a long look at myself, and I decided a different plan of action might be better.
Long-time stalkers might have realized that I am getting a bit… chunky. I blame the holidays for the weight gain, but I blame myself for the fact that it is still there long after the holidays are over. I recently found out that I have officially crossed the line into “obese” (by Japanese standards) for my height. It is time to do something about it. Thus, The Great Experiment.

What follows is my not-very-scientific experiment plan:
Goal: My goal is to see how much weight I can lose before my wedding that will take place on March 29th.
Process: I will attempt to use Wii Fit every day for a minimum of 30 minutes. The maximum time I will spend on it in one day is 60 minutes. During this time I will try to do several different exercises.
Eating Habits: I will keep my diet similar to the one I have now. I will eat 3 daily meals with snacks once or twice a day. Also, there will no doubt be occasional over-consumption of food and drink on weekends. For this experiment, my exact caloric intake will not be calculated. I do not plan to change my diet in any significant way, however with any fitness program there will be the desire to eat healthier and possibly less. I will try to make note of any large changes.
Exercise beyond Wii Fit: I ride my bicycle to and from work every morning, so I put in at least 1 hour of cycling every day, as I have for the last 4 years. Despite all this cycling, I have still managed to slowly gain weight over the years. Wii Fit will be my exercise in addition to this bike riding.
Recording: I will make a log every day of how much exercise I do with Wii Fit, which exercises I do and other general notes. I will try to mention my progress towards my goal and feelings towards Wii Fit and exercise in general. At the end of every week I will also weigh myself, and as the weeks go on, I’ll chart these results.

Now for the embarrassing personal details:
Status before starting Wii Fit: My height is 176 cm (a little over 5’9”) and my weight is 80 kg (about 176 lbs.) That puts my BMI at 25.73. Physically, there is a definite Wisconsin beer belly forming. See photo below:

I will begin the experiment tonight. My next report will be in one week. Wish me luck!

Don’t less any weight at all. A world with less Vinnk is a world slightly less bright.
Michael Tucker - 02.05.08 11:44 am
Good luck! I´m actually, very interested in the results, i would love to see if Wii fit is really an aid for weight watchers.
sakuragi - 02.05.08 11:46 am
Not too try and mess with your experiment or anything, but if you want to lose weight changing your diet even a bit can be a big help. Just something like not drinking pop will make a difference.
peshue - 02.05.08 11:50 am
@PESHUE
Yeah. I want to see the effects of WiiFit but I also want to actually loose weight, so if my diet changes at all I will be adding it to my notes.
Vinnk - 02.05.08 11:57 am
my question is - does richard simmons make an appearance? he should be in an exercise game for the wii (i said that once before, sorry for repeating myself)
lamartherevenger - 02.05.08 11:58 am
What’s the weight limit for Wii Fit again?
Also, if it’s actually good keeping you in shape, I’ll probably get it.
rbelmont - 02.05.08 12:13 pm
needs more vinnk slash. not the picture. the erotic fanfiction.
Jody Anthony - 02.05.08 12:19 pm
You should set up a blog for this experiment so we can follow your daily results.
Dean - 02.05.08 12:24 pm
Bah. Leave it to a real Wisconsinite to show you what a Wisconsin Beer Belly really means. My height is 5′ 11″ and I weigh 260 lbs. So yeah. Is there a weight limit for Wii Fit?
Nova Quinn - 02.05.08 12:33 pm
As mentioned before, changing your diet will affect your weight in more ways than just additional exercise. What is your current diet?
Lean meats, whole wheat foods, plenty of fruits and green vegetables are the way to go.
Matthew - 02.05.08 1:17 pm
speaking of richard simmons — has there been a more perfect mii-mascot for wiisport/wiifit ? somebody needs to get on that right away.
good luck vinkk!!
moo422 - 02.05.08 1:41 pm
Good luck. Also, I find it funny that you’re almost the exact height and weight as me, and I have a true Wisconsin beer belly. Madison, WI is the greatest.
Nick - 02.05.08 2:07 pm
Haha, Madison, huh? I might be moving there this summer. I’m up In Northern Wisconsin now.
Aaron - 02.05.08 2:12 pm
I hope it works out, but I’d be really surprised if it leads to major weight loss… everything I’ve seen on it seems so slow and low-intensity. Maybe it’s worth having small weights as you do many of these? I don’t know if the game suggests that though, it’s possible.
Tony - 02.05.08 2:19 pm
No offense, Viink, but your beer gut is like…really high up. Are you holding in air in that picture or something? Or maybe wearing really high tight pants?
Drew Kora - 02.05.08 2:41 pm
I’m super-excited for wii-fit and excercise is ALWAYS good no mater the diet.
Jørn Hansen - 02.05.08 2:49 pm
Long time stalkers…LOL.
I’m looking forward to this report.
I think the outcome will help me decide if I should get it. My wife says she definitely wouldn’t mind getting one.
Josh Bujanda - 02.05.08 2:52 pm
Cool idea, good luck dude. And what does your fiancee think of this?
theONE - 02.05.08 3:58 pm
Good Luck.
As for myself, I prefer DDR or Stepmania to my keep weight OK (it works!).
Mother 1+2 for 29.90$ - 02.05.08 4:03 pm
good luck with that. and hey - you’re getting married the ame day asme
Alex Ford - 02.05.08 4:31 pm
Quite awesome. I’m actually excited about to this game (game?), but I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s my peripheral-collecting mentality. Looking forward to seeing your results!
June - 02.05.08 4:50 pm
Wow, really interested to see how you get on. I’d quite like to use it to supplement my exercise regime (guess I need the Wii first though!). I just did Let’s Yoga every day for about a month for blogging, it was actually quite fun and I bet you’ll have a good time doing WiiFit for your wedding (congrats on that!).
jgoreham - 02.05.08 4:55 pm
if this goes as well as that guy who played wii sports for 3 weeks and lost 9 lbs, the results should be good.
and yay! i know have a full body shot of vinnk so i can make a poster!!!!
lemcott - 02.05.08 5:16 pm
Not that I particularly want to see it… but I think if you posted pictures of you in your skiveys it might give the viewers at home a better understanding of your progress!!!
Cole - 02.05.08 5:28 pm
So….what ARE the Japanese standards for being obese?
Cowlix - 02.05.08 5:50 pm
Cowlix: BMI of 25 or higher.
(
JDavis - 02.05.08 6:23 pm
haha i live in Madison WI and you look pretty good by our standards. not to say all Wisconsinites are fat but it wouldn’t be a stereotype if there wasnt some truth to it.
wow. many people live in Wisconsin here?
kojo87 - 02.05.08 6:25 pm
The weight limit for the board is 300 lbs. I wanted to try the exact same thing before my wedding and shed a few pounds but Wii Fit won’t be coming out in the US until afterward which is around the time of Vink’s wedding. I will be hitting the gym every chance I get for the next 80 days and focus on cardio. Good luck Vinnk!
Marco - 02.05.08 6:26 pm
I intended to follow that up with a less-than-3 Google, but failed to consider the consequences.
JDavis - 02.05.08 6:28 pm
@NOVA QUINN
I was born and raised in Wisconsin.
As for the weight limit, the Japanese version has a cut-off of 136kg (about 300lbs) but the western version might support more.
Vinnk - 02.05.08 6:30 pm
if you are obese I’m a f*****g whale…
masami_eiri - 02.05.08 7:31 pm
go man go!
Additive - 02.05.08 7:52 pm
Don’t give up Vinnk!!!!
RayRay - 02.05.08 8:00 pm
がんばって、Vinnk! I’m very interested in the results of your experiment!
steers - 02.05.08 8:01 pm
Vinnk, YOU SO CRAZAY!
lotan - 02.05.08 8:11 pm
がんばって indeed Vinnk! I know I need to hit the gym myself. =D
Mookie - 02.05.08 9:04 pm
Another Wisconsinite, but not Madison. Rock Springs, population 484.
Carl - 02.05.08 10:07 pm
Off to DDR!
Crimson Warrior - 02.05.08 10:11 pm
gyunyu77 - 02.05.08 11:11 pm
Exercise does not make you lose weight. Eating “better” makes you lose weight. Exercise will tone your muscles, but it will not make you lose weight.
Mikezila - 02.05.08 11:25 pm
@VINNK
Awesome! I might just give that a try myself then. It might be worth their money to make a slightly higher capacity board over here though…I bet even taking it to 350 lbs would include a high percentage of the missed people.
Also, I didn’t know you were originally from Wisconsin though, that’s great! Seems like there’s a lot of us Wisconsinites on here.
Nova Quinn - 02.05.08 11:33 pm
Wow. I wonder if this site is really that Wisconsin-heavy on readers or if it’s just a matter of more of them posting due to the mention of one of our state’s better known, uh, features. As for me, I was born and raised in Green Bay, but I don’t possess that famous bulge.
Jake - 02.05.08 11:56 pm
VINNK LET’S GO TO MCDONALDS TODAY BEFORE EIKAWA!!! I bet I can eat more cheeseburgers than you!
Peso - 02.06.08 12:35 am
Solution might not be exercise based, but diet based. I don’t expect much of a result, aside from toning.
ktin - 02.06.08 3:26 am
I disagree with Mikezilla.
If you add 30 mins of excercise every day on a body that doesn’t or just slightly gains weight over the years there’s no doubt you’ll lose fat. Don’t know how serious the Wii Fit excercise is, but I’d bet on about 3 pounds or more til your wedding if the given details are correct.
siro - 02.06.08 5:51 am
That’s a good goal. Good luck!
Savage - 02.06.08 10:46 am
Neat idea, I will sure be watching your progress!
AleksOD - 02.06.08 12:17 pm
Wow, very cool! Best of luck, and I’ll look forward to updates.

So many people have misconceptions about losing weight.
Using Cardio for weight loss = failure every time. EVERY TIME.
The only way to lose weight PROPERLY and to keep it off is to increase your bodies base metabolic rate - BMR.
As far as I can tell Wii Fit should be pretty good for this, as long as you perform and complete a large number of the muscle and yoga training excercises, and not focusing on cardio.
Most of the time the 30 minutes excercise that people are doing they think they are burning off fat, where as realistically they are burning off what they have in their stomach.
The secret to losing weight is increasing muscle mass.
More Muscle means more volume for your body to feed.
More volume for your body to feed means a higher base metabolic rate.
This actually means that you can eat MORE food - amazing thing that.
Starving yourself, eating lettuce and jogging, light riding or light cardio will not help you lose weight.
Someone said that they doubt he will lose weight but will gain tone - COMPLETELY WRONG.
Tone is gained by losing fat stores. FULL STOP. You cannot tone up without losing fat.
If you want some proper help to lose weight, use Wii Fit but email me and i’ll help you with some REAL guidance.

im behind you man. jas and i are actualy trying something of the same thing. only we’re alot stricter about our food. which is hard you know in a place that values its cheese so.
anyway, best of luck! we all need it.
theresa - 02.07.08 8:54 am
Wow, Vinnk is shaped like me. PRO TIP: I just found a $650 treadmill on craigslist for $50. Drove over, picked it up, and have been running on it a few times a week… while playing DS
a good run in the morning really makes you feel quite good.
Namssorg - 02.08.08 2:05 am
Also: Devon- I agree with you there. Hook us up! I enjoy cardio, but I also do a good bit of circuit weight training for the muscles. We should start a 4cr health club on the forums.
Namssorg - 02.08.08 2:09 am
Best of luck with it! Will be very interested to see the results.
Wii Fan - 02.08.08 4:29 am
Yeah, I’m with you Namssorg, I don’t know much about this Blog however as I just found it because of the Wii Fit experiement.
Tell me what to do
