In a new interview with the New York Times, Reggie talks about Wii’s upcoming Everyone’s Nintendo channel, and how it will allow DS users to download both demos and complete games. Nice. Even better is the hypothesizing of Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett [source]:
“No further info is provided on the channel’s Western launch or what kind of “complete games” he’s talking about, but does this mean the Game Boy and/or Game Boy Advance might about to be added to the Virtual Console’s lineup?“
Please let this happen soon! It’s been far too long since I’ve played Super Mario Land.

How dare he tease us!
Aaron - 01.02.08 2:52 pm
Wow, that sounds really exciting! I can’t wait for that channel to come out over here!
Matthew - 01.02.08 2:58 pm
I wonder how they’ll work that. As far as I know VC games haven’t been cracked to transfer between systems yet, but the ds is pretty much wide open.
peshue - 01.02.08 3:08 pm
Ahhh Super Mario Land… goooood times.
I want this channel SO bad right now. D:
Crimson Warrior - 01.02.08 3:09 pm
VC games would be cool and I think would definitely erase the pricing system complaints that I have. It would really add to the value.
I’m not sure what complete games really implies though… does it mean VC stuff? Does it mean specialized, more simplistic DS games? I would be surprised if we could get stuff through the service that compared to retail titles, but that would be very cool.
I suppose what kind of stinks about it is that you’d have to own both to take advantage of it.

Luke Plunkett? Any relation to our Nick Plunkett? :p
This is great news, I would love to download some GB/GBA classics on the VC.

Wow, I’m a retard. Nick Luckett!
I’m so sorry 4cr, this is my punishment for not being here in the past months.
Arcanis - 01.02.08 4:02 pm
This makes more sense for the fully licensed Nintendo micorSD adapter.
Marco - 01.02.08 5:29 pm
That’d be really REALLY great, except that I bet Nintendo still think we’ll be willing to pay ÂŁ5 a game….
The whole VC thing gets me so riled up. It’s an amazing idea; legalized emulation which will allow many kids just getting into gaming to play some of the classics their parents grew up with, but it’s totally shat upon by making us pay over the odds to play them.
I’d have given them away free or at least made every game 79p or an even pound, akin to the iTunes song model. Buy Super Mario World for 79 cents, or every NES and SNES Mario game for a buck. Why not?! It’s not like Nintendo are still making money on these games; if anything, they’re losing it to emulators?!? I have an entire library of old games on my Mac, but I’d probably pay a pound each to play accurate translations on a big screen…..
Peanut - 01.02.08 5:59 pm
Um, that article doesn’t mention the new channel at all.

I realize this is a bit of a leap, but this seems to be one of the simplest ways Nintendo could give us an English version of MOTHER3. And that would make me very, very happy.
llamapalooza - 01.02.08 6:55 pm
this smells fishy… it seems to me that the reporter could have overreacted on his article… so far, the nintendo channel in Japan only lets you download demos into the temporary memory of the DS, and it seems logical to supply the same service to America as well. I’m going to be cautiously skeptic about this until more information, preferably directly from nintedo, is announced.
Artefacto - 01.02.08 7:22 pm
Why do people keep bringing up the Game Boy Advance when mentioning the Virtual Console? The system died less than a year ago, people, and you can play the physical GBA cartriges on a system that’s still being sold by Nintendo. We’re not going to see the GBA on the VC for quite a while, especially not till long after a fairly extensive amount of original GB and GBC games have been released in downloadable form.
Thores - 01.02.08 10:42 pm
Something like this would have to require some kind of an extra hardware (for saving and semi-permanent storage of games on the DS). I mean, you can do a suprising amount with the DS’s RAM (all NES and GB/GBC games would fit, as well as many SNES and Genesis games), but there’d be no way to save the games. Maybe the rumored “Official DS Flashcart” thing would come into play here…didn’t Nintendo have a patent on a name (or maybe it was the concept) of something called the ‘Gamepocket’ or something like that?
I wouldn’t count on GBA games though unless an Option Pak in the form of a RAM expansion was also sold (32 MB would be enough for all GBA titles)…the DS wouldn’t be able to emulate the GBA (as the DS isn’t fast enough to do so), and there isn’t any way that the DS could play GBA games from it’s RAM (or from DS Slot-1) anyway without emulation (though NES, GB/GBC emulation is really doable, as is SNES and Genesis emulation although they are FAR more tricky if the homebrew emulators available for the DS are any indication, and of course they are).
Oh yeah, and as for the other consoles on the VC…I’m pretty sure Nintendo confirmed that, in Japan at the least, the MSX would be coming, as for the other my guess would be Master System.
9th Sage - 01.02.08 11:40 pm
V-Pocket.
It’s called V-Pocket.
And it’s supposed to be about 256MB (2gb) or so.
Which means that it can hold a ton of GB/GBC/NES and DS Ware.
Philip Wesley - 01.03.08 2:25 am
does anyone else see this as nintendo’s perfect opportunity to release mother3 in English?
tomato - 01.03.08 6:20 am
Oops, I guess someone else did have that idea
Well, agreeing with llamapalooza then.
tomato - 01.03.08 6:25 am
i’d like to see the ability to download VC games to the DSand play them off there.
kojo87 - 01.03.08 12:56 pm
Well, I know I’d certainly pay for a download of Mother 3 in English, even if it was some kind of an emulated on the Wii version that would be fine.
9th Sage - 01.03.08 12:59 pm
Oh yeah, and thank you Tomato, and everyone else working on the Mother 3 project.

It seems that the above was a misprint by the NY Times, Nintendo announced that:
“in the future, the Nintendo DS will be able to receive demo versions of some DS games from Wii, but not the entire game.”
Marco - 01.04.08 5:55 pm
Wouldn’t this require registering your DS with your Wii somehow? There’s no way Nintendo would let you download a game to your Wii that could then be copied to multiple DSs.
D-R-M; it’s how you spell the opposite of fun.
