by N Rumas - 12.26.07

Well, 2007 is almost over, and I think we can all agree that it was an awesome twelve months for gaming. Over the next week, we’ll be taking a look back at the year that was, so stay tuned. For now, continue reading to find out what we played during December — not to mention how crazy Benny is — and be sure to let us know what kept you busy, as well.

Michael Tucker:
I made my rounds with several good games this month. I started off with indie RPG Last Scenario, which I’ve been chipping away at for months. Then, I moved on to the fantastic Aquaria, and you all know how I feel about that game. I also finally got around to trying Pyschonauts thanks to the ability to download classic Xbox games on the 360. Now I know what Mitch is talking about. It’s one of the funniest, well scripted, and flat out enjoyable games I’ve ever played.
On the subject of great, poor selling games, I wrapped up December with some Beyond Good and Evil. There’s just a quality to that game that makes it beautiful in an indescribably transcendent way. Jade’s one of the coolest, most self-empowered protagonists ever seen. I got so lost in the experience that it only took me two sessions to make it through the game with everything accomplished, and it didn’t feel one second too short. Game developers could learn a thing or two from this gem’s pacing, and I hope it one day gets the sequel it deserves. Overall, December’s been a good month of gaming for me.
Jody:
I have still been playing Assassin’s Creed. Put Super Mario Galaxy on hold for a while, but I’ll get back to it soon. I did find my DS lite charger (finally!), so I have been playing some DS material, namely The Simpsons Game and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. The Simpsons Game is actually a pretty fun sidescroller. If you’re a Simpsons fan, it’s worth playing just for the voice acting (of which there is a surprising amount), but for some reason it is a lot quieter than all my other DS games. I have to wear headphones to hear anything. I also traded some games to Shaun for a Super Nintendo, so I will soon be rocking my way through Illusion of Gaia and A Link to the Past. Man, I love video games.
Shaun (aka Megashaun):
December’s been a manic gaming month, but overall, the games I played most have been Guitar Hero 3 and, surprisingly, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Though the latter suffers from some serious playability problems, the story is entertaining enough to keep me entertained. Additionally, the co-op mode makes it about a million times more playable, as your teammate is now NOT an idiot. On the Nintendo front, I’ve been spending my nights blasting through aliens in Contra 4 and practicing combos in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, both on the DS.
Edgar:
This is the first month I can say I didn’t play Guild Wars (at all). Instead, I played a lot of 360. Got the latest XBLA title, Arkadian Warriors, which is basically a Diablo-style dungeon crawler. It’s tons of fun to play online with a friend (only 2P support). I also played Assassins Creed, which I borrowed from a friend. It’s the most beautiful game I’ve ever played, but I got bored after two of the main assassinations… it’s so repetitive.
On the Wii, I got back into Super Mario Galaxy and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2. Also, this month was the first time I tried MoH:H2 online. Let me say I was surprised; there were tons of games to join, no lag in 32 player deathmatches, and it was tons of fun to play with the Zapper.
Evan (aka rbelmont):
I actually have been playing less games in Decemberthan I normally would. I went to California earlier in the month and bought Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime for the trip. It’s such a great game, and I recommend it to anyone with a DS. I also played Picross DS on the trip, which is one of the few games that I continually try and beat my old “highscores” in. And last, my friend and I finally finished The Warriors on PS2. It’s a great beat-em-up with on of the best fighting systems in gaming.
Benny:
Oh boy, here we go again. My recent gift of a PS3 (and the gift to myself of various PS3 games) has done nothing but added to my glut of gaming troubles. I honestly don’t remember a time when I had this many games to play that I actually planned on finishing because they were all worthy of it.
I’m actively playing: Super Mario Galaxy. Although I ran through the first 60 stars to see the (fantastic) ending, the next 60 are going to be like a fine wine. Mainly because they’re a bit harder than the first. Mass Effect has also got me in its grasp. BioWare has done it again… and screw you guys, I happen to love the combat (for the record I’m fully Biotic-driven). Guitar Heroes 1-3 are also randomly knocking around in my rotation. My fave song are spread throughout the series, and it’s a damn shame there isn’t a way to arrange all the songs I like on one system/game/guitar. I just got a PS3 (today), and I can tell that both Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted are going to be actively played as well. On top of that, I looked around the PlayStation store and was surprised to find the quality was a bit higher than what XBLA has given me. Both Everyday Shooter and Super StarDust HD are utterly fantastic. flOw is also pretty damn great just to veg out with.
Waiting in the wings/unfinished/casual Titles I’m “playing”: On the PS3 front, MotorStorm isn’t giving me the best first impressions… so it may be taking a back burner position if it doesn’t get my interest soon. I’ve got so many stories incomplete in my head I’m unsure whether I want to start FolkLore and add to them. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is great for some casual co-op, and I started Tomb Raider Anniversary: Wii Edition, but it has to be put on the back burner for some better games. Same goes for Mercury Meltdown: Revolution. The Wii Zapper is solely on aggression-relief duty, with Ghost Squad and Link’s Crossbow Training fighting for that coveted position. Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is great (surprisingly so in Arcade Mode), but the fact that it’s another WWII shooter means it can wait until after the big boys are played with. I’ve still got Overlord and MySims floating around from the summer… god knows when I’ll get to them. Oh, and how can I forget the portable front… where Jeanne D’Arc, Luminous Arc, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Zelda DS, My Word Coach, and OutRun 2006 are all possibilities for my portable gaming needs.
You know, when I actually type it out it’s a wonder I can pay rent and eat food. Maybe I’m sleepwalking and robbing banks at night… In any case, I’m going to have to put a serious hold on my videogame spending. That’s an insane amount of games to have “pending,” and I may have forgotten some. Wowza.
:Edit: How could I forget… I finished Half Life 2, but the rest of the Orange Box awaits me… and Fire Emblem is on hold until I can pay attention to it.
I’m sick. Like I have a disease. Jesus.
GK (aka Gongonzabar Farbin):
I recently decided to start playing Twilight Princess again. However, after picking it up after months of no TP love, I felt lost and confused in figuring out what it was I was actually supposed to do. So I erased my old file and started anew! Super Mario Galaxy also dips into my Wii every now and then, while the free Geometry Wars clone, Grid Wars 2, occupies my time on my laptop.
Rumas:
First things first: Benny wins. I will never, ever reach his level of hardcore-ity.
December was busy, but it was a nice month. I spent most of it out and about in the cold Korean weather — which I love — but I also found the time to kick back at home and play some games.
My most-played games of the month were Zack & Wiki and Super Mario Bros 3 on the VC. I love the former as much as ever, but I must admit that the difficulty is ramping up to the point that it’s testing my patience. Maybe I’m just not smart enough

As far as SMB3 goes, this is the first time I’ve played the game in earnest for years, and I think I’m having more fun with it this time around than ever before. What a masterpiece. Also, the Wiimote is downright wonderful for NES games, as is the save state feature. Now I don’t have to start from the beginning each time
![]()
Finally, I’m still working on Super Paper Mario, and loving it the whole way through. I know a lot of folks were disappointed in the game, but not me. The mini-games in the arcade are a fantastic bonus, too.

The games I’ve played this month are few. I started the month out with returning to Final Fantasy III for the DS in an attempt to finally getting around to finishing the game, and I found that I loved it. It truly peaked my interest in the next installment in the DS remakes. Inbetween fits of lazyness, I got around to playing DDR Extreme on a very broken pad, which makes playing the game less of a game and just a workout. Who would want that? Following FF3, I finally got a hold of a copy of Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Best. GBA. Castlevania. I don’t know why I liked this game so much, but it felt more like the action oriented Castlevanias than the metroidvania formula. Great game. Following that, I started a game I’ve had for over four years now and never bothered to beat: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. While not a shining example of SRPG greatness, it has been a fun experience. I plan on finishing that today.
And with Christmas fresh in my memory, I’ll be enjoying my spoils of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, Megaman Powered Up, and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. A great day to own a PSP.
Mune - 12.26.07 12:13 pm
I’ve been putting the finishing touches on Mario Galaxy, as well as finally getting the chance to play Sin and Punishment, which is awesome on so many levels, despite its age (aiming with an analog stick, how primitive =^u.u^=)
I got Guitar Hero III and Puzzle Quest (DS) for Xmas, so that’ll be what takes up the rest of the month, I’m sure.
Kyattsuai - 12.26.07 12:53 pm
Still playing Planet Puzzle League on the DS, Started as well Final Fantasy VI on the GBM for the second time.
Also got Sam & Max Episode 201 - Ice Station Santa to get started with.. business.
Grimgoil - 12.26.07 1:09 pm
SMG and SSX Blur have been taking up my time lately. Great games.
Drew Kora - 12.26.07 1:28 pm
Leading up to Christmas, I FINALLY put the finishing touches (after many years playing on and off) on Okage: Shadow King for PS2, which I highly recommend if you like your RPGs quirky with a lot of humor and style (the art is a little reminiscent of Nightmare Before Christmas) and logged in a few more hours on the copy of Final Fantasy V for PS1 I’ve been doing the same for - now a bit closer to the ending. I also finally got around to finishing up Luigi’s Mansion the day I finished Okage (Notice a bad habit in my gaming trends yet?). One game I’ve actually been consistent in playing straight through (actually it works out like this for pretty much all of my handheld titles for some reason) is Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for DS. I’m at almost 70% now, which most was accumulated in the week or two before Christmas.
All that changed yesterday, haha, so it’s good that I got two of the four games completed (my goal was to finally finish games before starting new ones =p ). I have a feeling that they are all going to be finished by next month, partly in my attempt to stop putting games on hold (there are probably close to 30 under that category at the moment), but more so because they were all really awesome/addictive.
Super Mario Galaxy - of course, no explanation is needed here.
Trauma Center: Second Opinion - I played the first one through in a day or so on DS because it was so addicting, and even though the first half of this one is more or less an enhanced port of that game, I’d been meaning to replay it eventually, and what better way than with the controls of my little bro’s Wii!
Naruto: Rise of a Ninja - based on my opinion of what I played last night, the 360 that my brother and I pooled our money together to buy for Christmas is justified by this single game.
MLB Power Pros (Wii) and Eternal Sonata - I haven’t even opened these games yet, but one looks like a remake of Extra Innings for the SNES (aka the greatest sports game of all time) and the other is an RPG about Chopin - how can you lose?!?
And to top it off, I’m probably going to finally start the copy of Twilight Princess for GameCube I got last year and never got around to on New Years - sacrilege, I know, I know.
A very Merry Christmas, indeed.
Keitaro - 12.26.07 2:08 pm
Culdcept for the PS2 - Picked it up on eBay and love it.
Rock band for 360 - Been playing it a lot with my girlfriend, it’s great.
Drawn to Life for DS - I got this for my girlfriend for Christmas and it’s been painfully overlooked. This game is gorgeous, it’s creative and an absolute blast.
robotplague - 12.26.07 3:16 pm
I’ve been playing the wonderful Contact DS, The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass and finally Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
w00key - 12.26.07 7:57 pm
Hmmm… really haven’t been playing much this month. Besides a few games of Brain Age (love it) for my DS, I’ve been playing Super Mario Galaxy with my little brother. The game, of course, is awesome. I really don’t know what to say about the game other than that it’s fun. I think that’s the definition of Mario games, “fun.” Some games you play, you know, you have to sometimes force your way through. Or, you simply give up and don’t come back. Mario Galaxy is different though. Actually, I’ve found that I play Galaxy in short bursts. I’d say, bursts of 30 hour to an hour, but then I end up coming back. That’s the beauty of this game. To put it short, Galaxy kicks ass, and if you haven’t played it yet, get out there and grab yourself a copy. Peace!
Matthew - 12.26.07 7:58 pm
sorry guys, I meant: “bursts of half-hour to an hour.” Peace.
Matthew - 12.26.07 8:01 pm
Let’s see… this month’s addictions have been:
Disgaea - PSP(Portable Crack, wheeeeeee!)
Burnout: Legend - PSP(just can’t get enough)
Guilty Gear Judgement - PSP(Mmm, portable GGXX)
Hellgate: London - PC
Portal - PC(soon to be joined by the rest of the Orange Box)
Peggle - PC
God of War I & II - PS2
King of Fighters XI - PS2(Vanessa returns, hooray!)
Soulcalibur Legends - Wii
Mercury Meltdown Revolution - Wii
FFXII: Revenant Wings and Geometry Wars:Galaxies DS would be on here as well but I lost them both within a week of purchase, along with Pokemon Pearl
And Phoenix Wright 3 has been idling in my DS with no play since I picked up Disgaea :|
.Pi - 12.26.07 8:44 pm
I kind of Forgot the Burnout paradise Demo…. I’ve been playing this demo for hours every night.
Can’t wait for the full game so Racing is actually enable online.
Edgar - 12.26.07 10:39 pm
It’s pretty much been Mass Effect non stop for December. But I just got five, yes five games for xmas. I don’t know what to do.
Geoff - 12.26.07 10:55 pm
CoD4 duuuhhhh
Feeling the awesomeness of the Neo Geo. Last Blade 2, KoF series, SF, vs, etc, and the Metal Slug games, which by the way have the most awesome sprites and animations ever.
Chantelise. Sort of feels like a very ‘lite’ Zelda game but plays more hack’n’slash. Also all in Japanese so I have no idea what is happening. Lovely.
*JUST* got the Orange Box in time to mention this month, today. Not really touched it yet, gonna wait for the festive season to fade and get stuck right into HL2, only 3(?) years too late. OBLIGATORY MENTION OF FINALLY GETTING TO PLAY PORTAL/TF2.
Nearly completed Valkyrie Profile after starting it last month. Once again I must sing it’s praises. It’s shot instantly into a place of being one of my favorite PS1 games, a console I am a big fan of.
Josh - 12.26.07 11:40 pm
Hey,where’s Vinnk?
shingo - 12.27.07 12:40 am
Vinnk actually got attacked by a clan on ninjas this month over in Japan. After kicking their butts, he is now the leader of the clan. So perhaps you could say he is playing Ninja Gaiden?
Gongonzabar Farbin - 12.27.07 1:11 am
I’ve been playing my Yoshi’s Island for GBA on my DS these days. Not much time for long gaming sessions as my mother’s keeping her eye on my time and how much of that time’s spent on studying for the SAT.
oh snap, there she is, gotta go
ABigSmall - 12.27.07 1:22 am
I’ve been putting an inordinate amount of time into Super Mario Brothers 2: The Lost Levels, the Japanese import title on VC. I never owned an SNES and so I don’t know the joys of Super Mario All Stars but I have learned one thing: SMB2:tLL is THE hardest game I have ever played. It has tested my patience like no other. Thank the high heavens they have Continues in this game, unlike its predecessor. My buddy and I have alternated turns throughout the entire game, having spent hours and hours trying to beat it with Mario - and after beating it we still have to beat it with Luigi. World 8 mocks us…
Other than that, I’ve been randomly playing Guitar Hero 3, played Super Mario Sunshine to relive the world of the FLUDD, thought about finally playing TLoZ:OoT Master Quest and replaying TLoZ:TP. Because it’s the holidays I’ve also been playing Wii Sports (bowling) with the family again, which is always a nice bonding experience.
AntonVonUber - 12.27.07 3:09 am
December was mainly spent finishing off 120 stars with Luigi in Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero 3 on Wii for me. Finally five starred Cliffs of Dover on Expert the other night so I can start trying to whittle down some other songs; I think Raining Blood is next on my list to five star.
Aside from that I really haven’t played a whole lot of games this month. Well, I’ve played Pokemon Snap on the Virtual Console a couple times, but I still haven’t gotten the Flute yet, so yeah. Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero are enough to keep me occupied until Smash Bros. anyway.
Dopple Boppler - 12.27.07 3:47 am
Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii front. I play in short bursts as well. I think I’m at 67 stars. Some of the comet challenges are insane and are requiring multiple attempts. But regardless, a blast! The 2p mode gets quite a workout with my cousins, and they do enjoy it! Super Mario 3 on the VC…good lord, it’s hard. But so good…I swear we gamers must have been masochists growing up…the NES/SNES era games are so vicious now!
On the newly acquired 360 front, CoD4! Huzzah! Online is the best multiplayer shooter I’ve played in a long time. Hard as hell and newbies may be turned away quick, but stick with it…it rewards those that are patient. I think my greatest achievement in the game has been a 10-kill streak. It’s good for me, cuz generally, I suck.

GF - 12.27.07 1:02 pm
I’ve put Super Mario Galaxy on the back burner (got about 18 stars left to go) and have been playing Zack and Wiki (got it for Christmas…I see why everyone was so crazy over it), and through the magic of gift cards, I’ve been playing Contra 4 and Geometry Wars for the Wii (I could play this game for hours).
I also got the Wii Zapper for Christmas, and have been occasionally dipping into Link’s Crossbow Training, which IMHO is worth the price of the Zapper. So far I actually like the Zapper, too, but let’s wait until I get more games that use it to pass judgement.
Oh yeah, and I got the first Phoenix Wright for Christmas as well…yeah, I know, I haven’t played it until now. Please don’t hurt me.
I plan to get going hardcore on Aquaria eventually too…the demo is quite fun.
