We’re back again, and on schedule, too!
This time around, Hokku and I chat up Nintendo’s worldwide sales and hopes for 2008 in the news, Vinnk talks about ‘The Pokemon Days of Summer’ and the roundtable crew chats up the used games market. Also, contributing band Leech provides a musical number to rock your freaking socks off. RAWK! Enjoy!

Kinda depressed that I couldn’t be in it…
rbelmont - 12.01.07 6:03 pm
So I take it that you guys just don’t reply to e-mails about people wanting to be in the podcast?
Eh, it’s cool, but I would have rather had some kind of reply saying that I couldn’t be in it than nothing at all. I’m gonna listen, now.

December 7th?
Aaron - 12.01.07 6:43 pm
Fish: the inter-fame has gone to our heads. Not only do we not respond to those emails, but we go out and buy really huge and overpriced sunglasses to wear before hitting “next”.
That is to say, our news submission has been way filled up with spam these past few weeks and we may have missed it.
If you want to try to get into the podcast, try leaving a voicemail at shout4cr . We usually put some of those in the podcast if we get some good submissions.

Well, I think I have to disagree with your roundtable’s position on the used game market (though I do agree Gamestop/EB are ridiculous with their used gaming profit margins).
Developers are getting paid in the current market, even when accounting for lost sales due to used games. If it weren’t profitable, there would not be video games being produced in such vast quantities. Your podcast seems to ignore the rights of the individual that purchases the rights to the game. (And as a minor side note, I think it’s more likely more times than not that used-game purchasers would simply NOT buy the game new at all, rather than paying full price for it).
This is nothing like music piracy, or piracy in general. Legitimately purchased games are in the full and rightful possession of the purchaser - and with possession in most cases comes inherently the right of alienation - the right to do with your property as you wish. Who would ever tell someone to wait to sell a profitable item like a game (only to watch it diminish rapidly in value) for the sake of corporate profit. If only corporations were so altruistic. Again, they are obviously getting their money, or else they would close up shop.
You guys eventually get to the real way to deal with the “problem:” Developers should shift to digital distribution - can’t easily resell those games. Either that, or they need to make their games so entertaining that we refuse to ever part with them.
So, my conclusion? Buy used games unless you want to support the games you believe in (and chances are, those games don’t need your support anyway). All our new media is rather over-priced. $60 for a lousy 360/PS3 game, really? The used game market opens up the ability for many more gamers to experience games they would have never otherwise enjoyed. This seems to be a good thing.

@GREGZ
I agree. As a buyer and seller of used games I love the used market. I thought I tried to present that viewpoint in the roundtable, sorry if it didn’t come across well.
Vinnk - 12.02.07 5:07 am
Yeah, laughing at the end. This was my first time listening to the show and it was better than expected. I am curiosu about one thing though; do the teachers actually fight pokemon battles against the students? Who wins?
Hope you cover WiiFit next month…
Don Q - 12.02.07 1:03 pm
Is that a request? Sure. If I manage to buy a copy, will talk about it.
Vinnk - 12.03.07 2:01 am
I don’t have the time to listen to this right now, having just finished a paper due tomorrow.. I’m listening to Viinks story right now, I actually can’t wait to get over to the land of the rising sun..
Oh and Animal Crossing is also my most anticipated title. I played probably too much of the DS title, and the Wii version looks to be the first shift in the series. Wild World was basically an Animal Crossing 1.5 in my opinion. To me, I just want a little less square, and a lot more actual village feeling. Animal Crossing at first feels really cool, but the town starts to feel very artificial after a while. I completely agree that the series, as N Rumas suggested, needs seamless online capabilities. It would do wonders in making the whole experience less artificial.
Good stuff so far guys, I’ll look forward to the roundtable tomorrow.
