Satoru Iwata has many faces: loveable nerd, talented game designer, unlikely-but-brilliant CEO, industry expander, sucker for Powerpoint charts that make him look good, and now, hunter of the hardcore. He had the following to say regarding Monster Hunter 3 exclusivity:

“Some argue that our success is short-lived and temporary. So, we now need to make efforts to constantly expand the player base by offering services and titles that can appeal, not only to those who have never played games, but also to those who play them hard.”

This is good news. As much as I love the casual gaming experience, I’m craving some deep, involving, and mature games on Wii. Monster Hunter 3, with its massive popularity in Japan, is a huge step in the right direction; let’s hope this is the beginning of a new trend.
