Satoru Iwata has many faces: loveable nerd, talented game designer, unlikely-but-brilliant CEO, industry expander, sucker for Powerpoint charts that make him look good, and now, hunter of the hardcore. He had the following to say regarding Monster Hunter 3 exclusivity:
“Some argue that our success is short-lived and temporary. So, we now need to make efforts to constantly expand the player base by offering services and titles that can appeal, not only to those who have never played games, but also to those who play them hard.”
This is good news. As much as I love the casual gaming experience, I’m craving some deep, involving, and mature games on Wii. Monster Hunter 3, with its massive popularity in Japan, is a huge step in the right direction; let’s hope this is the beginning of a new trend.

Haha, I so play games hard.

hard gaymes! sorry.

I hope the Iwata pop-art above is a peek at the look of the new, more mature Miis.

Yea-ea-ea-ah, yea-ea, I feel hardcore!

I can so imagine the header image being a WiiWare series. The Iwatas: a story of a family who had nothing going for them…except love…and Miis.

So this is something they’re only just starting to do?!?
Hmmm, as much as i hate the idea i really think xmas is going to be Sonys this year, by a long way.

I’m not sure what is coming out that makes this Sony’s Christmas pretty much anywhere.

ha, mature… every time someone refers to any video game as mature it makes me chuckle. Games aren’t mature, that’s why they’re called games, they’re to give us time to forget about being mature for a second and just enjoy ourselves. The only people who ever want to be mature are people who aren’t actually mature.

None of this matters. Not since Brawl got delayed to Feb. 10. So, so sad.
Atomsk - 10.11.07 3:02 pm
fuck the hardcore
HARD GAMERS, UNITE!

LOL. I wonder if a translator messed up, or if Iwata is really that awesome.
@maduin: A game that deals with mature themes can be considered mature. I’m sure we all agree that most Nintendo games are fun, but the themes within them are rather juvenile. I don’t say this with contempt; I love silly, imaginative and creative games as much as the next guy. But I don’t think it’s correct to say that “games aren’t mature”, especially when there are games that deal with serious issues, as well as games that are quite evocative and artistic.
That said, I’d still probably take Super Mario Galaxy over… Call of Duty any day.
Volt - 10.11.07 4:38 pm
Well he could start by making Phantom Hourglass hard. It was pathetically easy.

You see? This is why I love Nintendo.
I wouldn’t mind getting a few hardcore games in on my Wii. As long as the platformers stay and keep comin’, I’m fine.
OH! And I want a new Kirby game.
And Animal Crossing Wii.
Crimson Warrior - 10.11.07 4:57 pm
After the last conference,I’ll take him up on that.
Grimgoil - 10.11.07 5:16 pm
In reference to future hardcore Wii games, I’m really interested Retro’s next project. Kid Icarus, perhaps?

i have to a admit i’ve been playing PC games much more frequently than my Wii lately. i’m just playing Half-Life 2 for the first time now and i think i forgot what a real “hardcore” game is. if there were to be more games like that on Wii i would be more than content. that is not to say im not excited for Mario Kart and SSBB. once those hit and im done with games like Assassin’s Creed i plan on investing countless hours with my Wii. (once i get it repaired anyway)
for those of you with a gaming PC and/or Xbox 360: go buy the Orange Box. best $45 i’ve ever spent

I know this really has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but Zack and Wiki is coming out in 5 days on the 16th and now is the time to start building hype for it.
Damo Suzuki - 10.11.07 10:44 pm
FINALLY. HE’S LISTENING.
For some reason I can’t shake this feeling that Monster Hunter 3 is going to look like SC: Legends graphically (so basically a gamecube game). It BETTER look good.
gojiguy - 10.11.07 10:56 pm
Well, us hardcore gamers can’t say he forgot us anymore.
The monster hunter series has looked good, Im glad theres gonna be a wii release, now I dont have to dig up a PS2 or PSP or something.
Though PSP has been looking better these days.
Looking forward to a less CASUAL gamer centerd targeting form nintendo. At least a little bit.
shadow1w2 - 10.12.07 1:22 am
Finally Nintendo is getting their act together. With the PS3 dropping its price for the holiday season, and games like RE5, Assassin’s Creed and DMC4 launching soon - wii is getting smaller and smaller…

No More Heroes: not for hard gamers?
