So today Nintendo decided to give us some major Wii updates. First off, they updated the firmware to version 3.1 which added a new feature in the Wii message board. Now when you receive a URL in a Wii message, you can click on it and it will open the Wii browser directly on that page. Vook.Net has a video showing this.
The Everybody Vote Channel got USB keyboard support for typing in your questions, and the Internet Channel got some major updates. Here’s a list from Nintendo’s website:
- You can now use a USB keyboard to enter text such as writing emails or entering URLs.
- The B Button can be used as a “Shift” key when entering text with the Wii Remote.
- You can highlight text on a page and click the “Search” button to enter that text in the search field.
- Web addresses (URLs) can be edited instead of having to retype an entire URL from the beginning.
- The “Page Information” icon will stay visible. Clicking the icon will display the page’s security level, and offer the ability to send the page to a friend.
- The way pages are displayed has been enhanced with the ability to ignore white space, notification when zoomed images are at their native size, and other graphical enhancements.
- You can now save up to 56 sites to your “Favorites,” and you have the ability to send favorites to other Wii friends.
- The stability, speed, and security of the Internet Channel have all been improved.
There’s also an added bonus that the Opera Software Team told us about this morning:
Also new with this release is the ability to download Opera Widgets (http://widgets.opera.com) to the Wii using Widget View Mode. Widgets available now include calendars, news readers, Internet radios and other applications.
I think Nintendo is finally getting serious about its online support.

Great! Now PLEASE, Nintendo, recognize that the internet channel allows children around the world instant access to copious amounts of pornography, so maybe if you’re okay with that, you can be okay with letting us voice chat in online games, and play against random people and add new people as friends. And if you’re that worried about it, a simple parental control switch (like the one that disables access to the internet channel) could determine whether a game’s online features are rich and full and community-building like with Xbox Live, or needlessly crippled like they are with all of the Wii games thus far. It just seems hypocritical to have a full internet browser and still hold back with regards to online gaming…

GREAT JESUS YES!
Crimson Warrior - 10.10.07 10:22 pm
You’re wrong. Opera Software is serious about making a good browser on the Wii.
Greg - 10.10.07 10:39 pm
These are flippin’ sweet updates. I wanna try out the Opera Widgets and put the USB keyboard to the test.
Dean - 10.10.07 10:39 pm
This was a nice set of updates.
Savage - 10.10.07 10:49 pm
Now if only they could give us a higher level of flash support =/
Quaddw - 10.10.07 10:56 pm
it’s cool stuff, and what opera is doing is cool, but the whole wii online ordeal is a classic example of nintendo baby steps. frustrating and still rather useless. and that’s coming from someone who uses the opera browser quite often.

QUADDW - I thought the flash support was a problem with all opera browsers? I might be wrong since i don’t use the desktop version.
Edgar - 10.10.07 11:17 pm
flash support has nothing to do with nintendo or opera.
macromedia, or whatever the name of the company is that owns flash, has not released flash 9 for mobile devices, which this version of opera is technically considered.
Wii Opera will not get flash 9 support until macromedia releases the update, which nintendo nor opera have leverage over. they arent the only ones waiting for flash 9 support after all.

My update quit halfway thorugh and told me to try again later. : (
Anyway, I still don’t see myself using the wiinternet much.
Drew Kora - 10.11.07 8:11 am

David James - 10.11.07 10:06 am

I haven’t seen reports of bluetooth keyboards working, but I know (from second-hand reports and personal experience) that some regular USB wireless keyboards do work. There’s an unofficial list of Wii-compatible keyboards here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_USB_Keyboard_Compatibility_ List

Now can they just make multiple (a dozen or so) event call loops in Javascript code more stable?
hullbreach - 10.12.07 10:39 am
I just ran several tests and found the following changes with the Internet Channel behind the scenes:
- Canvas object speed increase around three-fold
- No more crashes from numerous event capturings
- No more crashes from intense canvas graphics
This has to be the best update yet! Prepare for games with SuperFX chip level graphics!
