Games Rebels Play — Almost Fall

Well, Summer’s almost over. It was a hot one for sure, making it an extra nice time to enjoy some Wii action in good old A/C comfort, not unlike this here slugger. Read on to find out what games (pre-Metroid, for the most part) we spent August playing, and be sure to chime in and let us know what kept you busy (and how you’re liking MP3), too.

Michael Tucker:

I’ve been oh-so-addicted these past few days to Metroid Prime 3. I don’t know what to say about this game that hasn’t been said lately. The controls can get annoying every once in a while as the pointer system on the Wii is pretty much the buggiest of its features, but even so it is the most engaging controls of any home console game I can think of.

While it may lack some of the precision of a mouse, the enjoyment of pantomiming even menial tasks feel engaging. More so, the art direction? Great. Story? Fantastic. Music? Amazing(as always). This Metroid title already feels like a great conclusion to a trilogy and I’m not even halfway through it yet.

On the PC front, I just started Knytt Stories. It finally came out recently and it feels every bit as dreamy as Knytt and Within A Deep Forest. When I have time, I want to give this game a notable write up, but until then I suggest you all head on over to Nifflas web page and download it yourself.

Greg:

The past few weeks have been filled with gaming for me. On the Xbox 360, I’ve been pouring time into Bioshock, which is easily one of the year’s top games. I also found a used copy of Oblivion for $25, so I’ve put a little bit of time into it. Also, I finally finished up a few of the extra modes in Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition. Kudos to Capcom for making a game so good that I bought it on multiple systems without feeling ripped off.

As you might expect, I’ve been playing Metroid Prime 3. Although I’m not very far into it, I absolutely love it. The controls are perfect, Retro has really nailed down how to do FPS on the Wii. The graphics also look pretty nice. I really appreciate some of the small touches, like voice acting, that Retro has added to make the setting feel complete.

On the DS, I’ve started playing Gyakuten Saiban 3 (otherwise known as Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations). Once again, the localized script is top-notch. I’m sad that this is the last game starring Phoenix. I’ve also been playing a review copy of Touch Detective 2 ½. I can’t say much yet, but it is a vast improvement on the first.

Jody:

I have been dabbling in quite a few games this month. My main focuses have been Excite Truck (Wii) and Suikoden V (PS2). Yeah, still working my way through Suikoden V. I haven’t had a ton of free time available this month, which is why it’s taking me a while. Aside from those I have been poking around in both Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) and still playing good ol’ LocoRoco (PSP).

Lastly, I have been playing the PSP version of Parappa the Rapper. I love that game. Crack-crack-crack the egg into the bowl!

No Metroid yet, I cant afford to get any new games any time soon :(

Edgar:

This Month I’ve played Rune Factory and Heroes of Mana on the DS. I’m really happy with the twist added to the Harvest Moon universe with Rune Factory. It gives it more to do in a day. I have to say I’m really impressed to with the way Heroes of Mana plays out. It plays great for an RTS on the small screen.

Like every other month, I’ve been playing lots of Guild Wars, and last weekend there was the preview event for Guild Wars : Eye of the North. Anyone who has any of the Guild Wars games, should get this expansion coming out August 31st. The extra content is really great.

Got Metroid, but I’m still not far yet — at the spot where you learn you can call your ship to land in a new spot.

Bombs:

I’ve been pretty busy finishing some old games before getting into the current rush of games. At the start of the month I went through all the Paper Mario games on the Wii. I got Paper Mario (VC), bought Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GC) and finished Super Paper Mario (Wii). If you’ve never played the Paper Mario games, I would strongly recommend playing them now since they’re great games and are now all playable on the Wii.

I’ve also had the time to finish Lumina Arc (DS) and Brave Story: New Traveller (PSP). Both games were great, lasting about 20 hours each. I’m now currently playing Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3 (PS2) and got back into Guild Wars (PC). Persona 3 has to be one of my favorite PS2 games so far along with Odin’s Sphere. As for Guild Wars, I bought the game when it came out two years ago, but stopped playing it when I moved back home on dial up. Since we recently moved up to satelite internet (still not the best for online gaming, but this is an MMO), I decided to give this game a go again.

It’s gonna be crazy once I start Bioshock, Stranglehold, Blue Dragon, Metroid Prime 3, Eternal Sonata, Lair and all of the other games coming out in September.

Vinnk:

I have also been playing a lot of Gyakuten Saiban 3. I just love this series. On the Wii front I have been playing a bit more Dragon Quest Swords and of course Excite Truck when friends come over.

Recently I also bought a Twin Famicom so I have been playing a lot of famicom Disk System games. To tell you the truth a lot of them are not very good, but there have been a few real gems.

I have also been playing lot of Super Star Solider on the VC. I am happy to play it but also feel a bit sad. Happy because it is a great game and sad because I already own ot on my PC Engine system. But one day I wanted to play it and I was just too lazy to hook it up.. and the Wii controller was right there.. you know the rest.

Rumas:

I still haven’t been able to track down an import copy of MP3, so I’ve been stuck catching up on the Metroid series, which is actually a very good thing.

I started out the month with Punch-Out!! on the VC, and I still haven’t been able to beat it. I absolutely love the game; it’s true work of genius, not to mention absolutely hilarious, especially after a couple beers. “Where are my camera crew? Hello, Tokyo!!” Hehe. I just got to Mr. Sandman, and he’s wasting me. Don’t wanna resort to a guide, but I’m tempted…

On the plane to and from Hawaii, it was DS time. I played a good deal of Electroplankton and Animal Crossing, and I also started from scratch again in Mario Kart DS. Talk about a game that never gets old. Here’s hoping MK Wii lives up to it.

Finally, my extra time has been taken up by Super Paper Mario, which I’m totally digging. It’s so relaxing, perfect for short play sessions before bed. In fact, it puts me to sleep. Not in a boring way, but in a soothing, good dream-inducing way :)
