Cooking Rebels – Sloppy Joeshi’s Island DS

Sloppy Joes, wimpies, yip yips, slushburgers. Whatever you want to call them, Sloppy Joes are one of my favorite meals, and a perfect meal to have on a Friday night. The problem is that people always seem to sadly reach for that jar of Manwich instead of taking on the task of making their own. Well, I’m here to tell you that with a few simple ingredients and about 15 minutes, you’ll never reach for that sad jar of goo again.

Colonel Jody’s Simple Sloppy Joes

1 lb ground beef (or turkey)
1/2 c diced green pepper
1/2 c diced onion
1 tsp crushed garlic (1 – 2 cloves)
Pinch of kosher salt
1 6oz can tomato paste
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp white vinegar
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tbsp prepared yellow mustard
red pepper flakes (to taste, if desired)

Procedure: Brown ground beef with onion, green pepper, garlic, and salt. Once browned, add tomato paste, brown sugar, vinegar, cumin, and mustard. Mix well until combined and heated through. Squeeze a bit of good honey or a bit more brown sugar if you wish, depending on how sweet you want your Sloppy Joes. Thin out with water depending on how thick you want them (I usually go between 1/4 and 1/2 cup)

There you have it, your very own Saucy Beefeater! Wait, you want the whole package, eh? Not just the saucy meat, but the bun and all? Well you’re in luck! My favorite way to have Sloppy Joes is as follows: Take a nice hamburger bun and lightly coat the inside with mayonnaise. Grind on some fresh black pepper and spoon on a heaping helping of your delicious sloppy joe meatstuffs. Add a quick squeeze of yellow mustard and a couple slices of pickle, and you’re in business! Delicious all on their own or with your favorite potato chips or french fries! A delicious variation includes adding a nice spoonful of crisp cool coleslaw on the sandwich along with the meat, but thats another post.

So you have your delicious Sloppy Joe to quench your appetite for food, but what about your appetite for a game? Well never fear, because straight from the Cooking Rebels kitchen to your computer comes a quick review of Yoshi’s Island DS!

Yoshi’s Island DS is a lot like a good Sloppy Joe. On the surface it’s a little sloppily put together, but when you dive in you find a pretty meaty experience. You control a gaggle of Yoshis on your way to save Baby Luigi from Kamek. Unlike the SNES original, you not only have the assistance of Baby Mario, but Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Bowser, and Baby Wario. Each baby has their own special abilities, be it Baby Mario with his speed, Baby Peach with her ability to fly up updrafts with her parasol, or Baby DKs ability to climb vines. You will need to use the powers of all the different babies in order to reach your ultimate goal of saving Baby Luigi.

The game plays pretty much just like the SNES classic. Run, jump, swallow enemies, and shoot eggs to reach your goal. Speaking of which, are all the Yoshis female, or do the males lay eggs as well? And how do they pop these eggs out so fast? Something strange going on there..but I digress. While some fans of the SNES Yoshi’s Island do not seem to care for this one, I personally say it’s great, and a great addition to anyones DS collection. Just don’t forget to wipe Sloppy Joe sauce off your hands before playing!

The original Yoshi’s Island is my favourite platformer ever and one of the biggest letdowns about the DS sequel was the music. The original soundtrack was catchy, upbeat and energizing, but the slow pace of the music in the sequel dragged down the feel of the game. Even the level-winning fanfare was so lackluster that beating a level never really feels like a celebration.

Although through it all the music was the only real negative point. The gameplay, animation, graphics and level design were all still top notch. Too bad someone fell asleep at the wheel for the music.

Forget, Manwich .. DelMonte Sloppy Joe sauce in a can rocks the world!

For a super low-fat, low-calorie, high fiber alternative:

Boca Burger crumbles
Del Monte Sloppy Joe Sauce
Light English Muffins

It’s less than 300 calories and 2g of fat per 3oz Joe!

Yeah, the sound is where the sequel is just killing me. Everything is spot on except the sound (and maybe about 5% of the gameplay is tweaked a little different from the SNES version but the item cards are about the only thing I miss).
When playing YIDS, I play with the sound off for the most part because I can still hear the SNES music in my head when I play the DS version (yeah I played the SNES one a lot). Seriously, they could have just copy and pasted the music from the original and I would have been happy or rather much happier.
I know some people think there isn’t much new to this game but I don’t think that’s anything bad at all. The dual screens are pretty damn cool for a platformer and I hope future platformers do stuff like this; it worked well. Just don’t put a complete noob on sound design next time ‘kay?

Yoshi’s Island DS is awful.

Go buy Super Mario Advance 3 instead.

People who don’t like YIDS just suck at platformers. It’s true it is a hard game but if you can’t do it just practice idiot, who wants another NSMB
