I’m going to come right out and say it: While Phalanx will always be my number one, this is one of my favorite pieces of box art ever. I love it all — the way the rough-drawn hero stands out from the well drawn background characters, the way the colors in the main character go outside the lines, the stylus dragging the color out so you know exactly what you are in store for, the prominent title, the determined look on the character’s face.
It’s one of those rare pieces of box art that when you look at it you can’t help but smile. I was already quite interested in the game itself (a platformer where you draw your own hero!), but silly as it sounds, this box pushed the game from eventual purchase to day one.
I am a huge fan of video game box art. There are a ton of boxes that make me feel happy by just looking at them, and this one is a perfect example. It makes me think of fun, and really, isn’t that what video games are all about?

Yeah, I love that boxart. But every time I see it, or read anything about this game, it reminds me of the Graffiti Kingdom DS that Taito announced ages ago and then didn’t do anything with. If I knew Japanese I’d email them and ask what the bloody hell they think they’re playing at.

Im probably the only person on the planet who liked amazing island for the Gamecube. and taken from that. this game looks friggin incredible!!!! ive got a thing for make-your-own-hero stuff like this.

Honestly I didn’t smile when I looked at it (”you can’t help but smile…”)
It is pretty neat though. It definitely stands out from Spectrobes, and Cooking Mama, and Pokemon Trozei…. I mean, most boxart isn’t at all interesting, and this one is, I would say, reasonably interesting. The blobby bat thing is cool. And the hero looks cool, esp. with the whole progression from relatively neat at the face, where you first look, down to extremely sketchy (but not in the bad way… hah!) at the bottom where you look last.

By the way if I ever get this game, my character will probably be something REALLY stupid. Because when they give you freedom like that, how can you NOT abuse it?
Simon - 07.19.07 11:26 am
I’m sorry Simon, but I’m going to be the first to create PenisHero(tm)

I completely forgot about that Amazing Island game on GameCube. There’s a lot of random games on there that I never tried and were almost completely forgotten about… I should try digging them up on eBay.

This boxart has all that it needs, it’s very attractive, well made and it reflects what the game is about. It’s on my list of favorite ones too!

Wow, I haven’t heard of this game. Good thing you brought up this box art, which is magnificent btw, because now it’s on my ‘must have’ list for DS, along side Zelda. And being alongside Zelda is an impressive thing to do.
Definately in the top 3 best box arts I’ve ever seen.

I didn’t smile either, but only because I was too distracted by the giant Popeye arms growing out of everyone’s head. WTF? Don’t even try to tell me those are ears.

best box art: ICO (Europe!)
Klaus - 07.19.07 3:00 pm
I think the above art is okay…
A couple of my favorites are the PAL version of RE4 and the JP version of Perfect Dark.
JWKobayashi - 07.19.07 4:05 pm
I like the box art exactly for the reasons you describe, it really anticipates what your in for…
I just hope in the end that the game is good, and if it is, that it would somewhat attract the general public. some titles *cough*Okami*cough* just don’t recieve the love they deserve even with great art direction shown right from the cover.
My very favourite box art has to be the PAL Pikmin 2 boxart, very creative.

Razo, correct me if I’m mistaken but i don’t think that’s the PAL packaging at all…at least not in Europe, perhaps it’s an Australian version? It’s just that the case I’ve got for the game is completely different and doesn’t depict the scene going on on that case you linked.
Oh, I have to agree with Klaus btw…the PAL case for ICO had some beautiful art, very un-videogame-like and almost worthy of a gallery. How it ever got past the usual soulless marketting types I’ll never know but I am forever grateful
Sun Night Raider - 07.19.07 6:52 pm
The last time I bought a game because of the box art was Summon Night 2.
That isn’t a very good game IMO, so I had a bad time.
yanipheonu - 07.19.07 9:35 pm
It’s nice, but that THQ-logo sure is ugly.
SCYTHOR - 07.20.07 12:38 am
That Pikmin2 one is Aus, dunno about the EUR version. And the PAL version of ICO boxart kicked arse. This boxart is pretty cool, but I don’t know how the game will be, not a huge THQ fan
Qbert - 07.20.07 8:57 am
Its a great boxart. Not only for the art, but it’s pretty straightforward what you can do in the game without even reading the description. And the most important thing in designing a boxart is getting peoples attention.
NoBullet - 07.20.07 12:56 pm
This game is destined to make the news as some guy first draws a hero that’s a giant pecker with smaller peckers for arms and legs, trades it in at Gamestop or something, and then some five-year-old buys it and her mom calls Jack Thompson.
