Hey pizons and pizanos out there in radio land! Do I have a surprise for you! Do you seem to recall that game that I rubbed myself up against last April? If you don’t, it was Mother 3, the official sequel to Earthbound. Long story short, the game got released in Japan only due to how poorly Earthbound sold back in the 90s.
But, being a former member of the Earthbound community at large, I can tell you first hand that the radio silence from Nintendo of America regarding Mother 3’s English release date wasn’t accepted with stride. Immediately, the Mother3.org project cropped up to take on the Herculean translation task. Consequently, Starmen.Net attempted to petition Nintendo of America for 6 months before they began their own translation.
Finally, after over a year of drama and silence, the teams at Mother3.org and Starmen.net have joined forces on all fronts to release the Mother 3 Fan Translation. The new team plans to ramp up the communication of progress to the patient fans (me) and all of that other good stuff.
Quoth reidman and his pants,
We’re hoping that this announcement will be a turning point for the project, and that this new team will be able to collaborate and challenge each other to get the work done as quickly and accurately as possible. It will be nice to have one unified translation sometime soon, rather than two different translations in the year 20X6

Truly, some exciting news for everybody that’s been looking forward to a quality translation of this damn game. Hopefully, with the combined efforts of Doctor Fedora and Tomato, we’ll see a speedy and awesome conversion. Best of luck, guys.

That’s great news!

This is terrific news! I still wish Nintendo would just release the game here. ilu @ mitch
Hamblasto - 07.04.07 2:29 pm
Why dont they just release it? Seriously, WHO WOULD IT HURT?!
mizzle - 07.04.07 2:42 pm
How will we be able to use the fanslation? Illegal download? Somehow apply it to the Japanese game cartridge? I don’t understand this… >_>
Simon - 07.04.07 3:07 pm
Simon: The patch would be released in a format which is applied to a ROM image of the game. Hopefully you bought the game and dumped the image yourself, but, it’s hard to speak for the intertube at large.

:O You capitalized reidman. Also, I’d just like to throw out a mention to Starmen.net’s EB Siege. If you want Mother 3 released over here, go to their site and check it out.
Nin10dude - 07.04.07 4:22 pm
Well, this is good news.
It was completely ridiculous that they weren’t joined in the first place.
mercatfat - 07.04.07 5:01 pm
@ Mercatfat:
Well the Mother3.org team started translating way before the Starmen team. Starmen.net felt they wanted to support Mother3 fully– (and wouldn’t allow talk of an english patch on their site) until they realized it likely WASN’T going to be brought over in English. Then they started their own.
I’m so GLAD they’re combining forces though. It’s quite a sizeable task for a game that is mostly text.

My friend is a big Mother fan, and has been telling me about these two sites for some time. He is more of a Starman.net fan himself, but whoever gets it done first I imagine.
Anyway, truthfully, I wish Nintendo would just release it. It could be Earthbound 2 or something. I dunno. I don’t care. But I really would like to see it.
That, and the original two Mothers on the VC. Although the first is kinda hard…even though they got the fully translated version…
OOF - 07.04.07 7:32 pm
Does anyone remember the “smell contest” that came on a card or something… either WITH Earthbound, or in an issue of Nintendo Power around its release? There was a contest to guess the smell. I guessed garlic, the answer was Pizza. Got a little prize anyway. A pizza scented car air freshener.
Namssorg - 07.04.07 8:30 pm
This is great news and all, but I think the EB Siege over at Starmen and it’s progress is overall better news, don’t you think?
But if the Big N does decide to ignore us, this translation will be an experience of epic proportions.
Katon - 07.04.07 10:43 pm
Holy crap, people. Move on already!
The gaming world is passing you by. Why don’t you get excited for Bioshock or Mario Galaxy and just let this go?
RobTurboGA - 07.04.07 11:54 pm
What are you even talking about Robturboga? We can’t be excited about a game WE HAVE NEVER PLAYED? In a series that many of us are big fans of? What’s so exciting about Bioshock?
Namssorg - 07.05.07 1:05 am
Because it is awesome.
Aboo - 07.05.07 1:06 am
Just because Nintendo has been ignoring us time and time again (yes, I have been a petition signer for every one of Starmen.net’s active movements) does not mean the gaming community is passing us by, just that we can illustrate how some companies repeatedly ignore their fanbase, however stupid that may be…
Amauriel - 07.05.07 1:27 am
I tried to play it in Japanese with a guide, while that Flint campfire scene was still emotional, I just can’t enjoy it enough being unable to read without swapping back and forth from an incomplete guide.
Matthew(Someguy) - 07.05.07 1:28 am
Bioshock is pretty damn exciting. There’s nothing to question there. Still, Mother 3 is also pretty damn exciting.
I was wondering why they didn’t just do this in the first place
lol.
Tony - 07.05.07 1:38 am
I hope Nintendo doesn’t try and stop this or anything. (Or stop this and actually, y’know RELEASE the game)
Lord knows they haven’t been paying attention to these guys at Starmen.net for the past decade or so, and it would be a shame to see them start kicking these guys to the curb now.
Granted…Nintendo still needs to give us Mother 1&2 while they’re at it…
Blue Falcon - 07.05.07 2:38 am
Can’t wait! I’ve gotta get a gba flashcart
