Welcome to a new 4cr feature — the Box Art Breakdown. As you well know by now, we love our pretty pictures and sweet designs, and in line with that, we love some good (and even bad) box art. In each entry, we’ll be taking a look at a particular box — past or present — and breaking down its strengths and weaknesses.

First up is the newly revealed box art for Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Check out the full pic and breakdown below, and be sure to share your opinion as well.

There you have it. Personally, I don’t dislike it, but at the same time, I find it rather dull. Much like the US boxes for Metroid Prime 1 & 2, actually.

By way of contrast, check out the Japanese boxes for Prime 1 & 2, both of which feature far cooler, tighter, and more dynamic designs. Going back in time, Super Metroid featured an awesome comic-style illustration on its cover, and the US and European box designs for the NES original are all-out masterpieces.

Conclusion: They don’t make’m like they used to. The trend has unfortunately been one of regression from the unique and bold to the dull and uninspired. I’d like to blame this on those ugly DVD cases, but I think the real culprit is a lack of creativity. The farther back you go, the more you see that good box art isn’t just about impressive pictures, but about a deep grasp of compelling graphic design.
