Play Magazine got some hands-on time with Metroid Prime 3 at Nintendo’s Media Summit. Here’s some juicy details from their play time with the game.
- Motion controls work better than dual joystick
- Super sensitive pointer in “advanced” mode
- Beam stacking ala Super Metroid
- Back tracking in MP3:C makes more sense than in previous Primes
- Extra development time was to give the game more polish. Nintendo wanted “Twilight Princess” levels of polish. Game is focused on Metroid fans and hardcore gamers, but still accessible to newcomers due to controls.
- Larger environments, bloom lighting, better textures than Prime 2
Play magazine says that MP3 could be the biggest FPS revolution since Halo. Just a couple more months to wait and find that out for ourselves

I’m way behind in the MP3 reading. Is it supposed to have online multiplayer?

Is that smiley face supposed to mean something?
Chooch - 06.24.07 9:16 am
Huh, Halo was a fps revolution? I suppose on consoles it was.

And my pants just exploded
Neeks - 06.24.07 9:31 am
Will rock…that is all.

I really hope the controls tun out to be really good.
I love FPS games but don’t like them with console controllers.
Pointing and shooting should be just that.

‘MP3′ could get very very confusing. I was like.. wha? playing your own music?
Horst - 06.24.07 10:43 am
Is Samus deflecting a shot in that picture, or does she have a Triforce on her hand like Link that she can shoot lasers from now?
Kyattsuai - 06.24.07 11:31 am
It’s the grappling beam, it can be used to pull enemy shields now.
CodyKitchen - 06.24.07 11:38 am
My own main concern is how much motion sickness I’ll get playing it. As much as I loved the others, I had to stop for fear of barfing all over my carpet.

*fapfapfap*
Arcanis - 06.24.07 12:15 pm
of course it will be a damn revolution
TakaM - 06.24.07 12:35 pm
Hopefully they won’t bring any of the “hunters” over from the DS version for multiplayer.
pr0 - 06.24.07 12:51 pm
ill second that! awesome control, great polish, AWFUL characters, generic story.
N Rumas - 06.24.07 1:21 pm
I hope the MP3 doesn’t have auto-target, that was aweful in Red steel when you were looking around (while zoomed in) and the camera kept moving to lock on enemies. The screen there makes it look like it will =(
Mike H - 06.24.07 1:35 pm
Not that they are going to do this, but I would love to be able to get the Light Suit again. That was the most badass suit ever constructed.
Oh, and whoever designed Quadraxis had better still be on the development team. That boss battle was EPIC.
/WANT NOW
Howard Roark - 06.24.07 1:44 pm
Huh? That looks mostly like MP’s normal HUD. I remember reading it would have a lock-on mode for those that want to use it like previous MP titles had, that’s probably what you’re seeing there.
9th Sage - 06.24.07 1:47 pm
I’m delighted to read the controlls work well.
Classic Metroids stay fun, even after finishing them multiple times. I hope they can finally carry over this aspect to MP3’s single player mode. MP1 and MP2 were great single player experiences, but the fun only lasted for one playthrough IMO.

yeah, I’m looking forward to this.

lemcott - 06.24.07 5:03 pm
That last line is so dumb… biggest revolution since Halo? What did Halo revolutionize in the FPS genre? Nothing. Being a hit game != being a revolutionary game.
Anyway, I am very anxious to get MP3… it looks fantastic and the first two were great.
Pikachelsea - 06.24.07 8:48 pm
Pikachelsea, I think it may have been the fact that after Halo came out developers of console FPS games finally started to realise how to set up the controls so it didn’t make your brain bleed from being so horrible (not that they’re anywhere near as good as mouse+kb still though). It also began the trend of console FPS games becoming big major selling titles compared to before, so you could call that a revolution I guess.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind some of the hunters from MP: Hunters being around still…imagine what a Phazon-courrupted Trac might be like…oooh, evil and deadly.

i’m officially X-eye-ted. i’m also inebriated at the moment.

Beam stacking a la Super Metroid? Yay!
I will continue to shoot Ganados in anticipation of shooting Space Pirates.
MR_DNA - 06.25.07 1:30 am
Halo? Golden Eye maybe… but Halo… that just brought my hopes down lol

I’m not the market here, but apparently Halo was for consoles what Quake was for the rest of us who’d been playing FPSs on the computer. It was the first major FPS with solid online play, decent graphics, and… hmm… how you can even begin to control a FPS with on a console is beyond me (I had friends who were into Goldeneye, but it just felt a bit like rehashing Dark Forces to me), but apparently it was good at it or something.
The main thing is the online multiplayer. It gave the console-bound a taste of what everyone else had been drinking for years and laid the groundwork for the PC/Console crossover titles that we’re now having to deal with. Halo is the reason why Bioshock is thought of as a 360 game to so many people or why Oblivion was released with more fanfare on the 360 than the PC.

wasn’t the first great console FPS Goldeneye? I’m sure Halo perfected the stuff but it was goldeneye the real innovator. I don’t care anyways, not my cup of tea. And i would buy Metroid even if it became a cooking game.
rokerovakero - 06.28.07 2:25 pm
I’m really looking forward to this!
