According to Game Politics and a press release from Take Two Interactive, Rockstar’s upcoming “murder simulator,” Manhunt 2, has been rated Adults Only by the ESRB. This isn’t entirely unexpected, given that the UK’s own rating board, the BBFC, rejected the game entirely earlier today.
This is literally a death sentence in most cases. Wal-Mart and several other major retailers will not sell an AO game. While it would be interesting to see Take Two take a chance on this, it won’t happen. Nintendo’s own publishing rules ban the existence of AO titles on the Wii. This alone guarantees that Rockstar will make cuts and get this down to a Mature rating. Even with the cuts, will the BBFC allow the game to be sold in Britain?
It will be interesting to see what happens to this game over the next couple of months. Godfather was ignored by the general public, but it looks like the violent Wii games issue will soon rear its ugly head.
It’s Official: Manhunt 2 Rated Adults Only by ESRB
Manhunt 2 Banned in Britain

Ah, that kinda sucks, I gotta say. C’mon, man, just one game like that. Just let it slip, just this once. After seeing the ManHunt trailer, I was getting all excited. I love Mario, Zelda, and all those mature games. But it would be nice to play, at least once, a game that just takes it overboard. I know you guys agree with me. Admit it.

i couldn’t care less about this game. or gta for that matter. they’re just exhausting to play. the violence doesn’t bother me, but it gets old when it’s the only focus of the game.

why the hell are the comments taking so long to post lately? or is it just me?
Atomsk - 06.19.07 7:24 pm
I generally don’t like Rockstar. At all. GTA 3 and beyond were over rated pieces of crap. The first Manhunt was considered mediocre. About the only game that intrigued my interest was this, and Bully.
I was somewhat interested in this game. It seemed like Rockstar was taking it seriously, and the story sounded somewhat interesting. BUT…the thing is that as I read IGN’s generous preview, I found myself saying out loud a number of times “Oh Gawd…that’s f***in’ horrible”. I don’t mind violence so much, but even I have a limit.
In addition, like Atomsk, often, violent games that focus on just being super violent are often compensating for something…like crappy game play. Or a poor story. Often both.
AND NOW…It’s AO? I dunno if I’m as interested now. And even if I still am, where the hell am I supposed to find it? I don’t even think Gamestop carries AO games.
Way to go Rockstar.

rockstar might try to stir it up and push Manhunt. Like a marketing strategy. If everyone starts talking about how crazy gory and violent it game is… “Holy Cow, I wanna play a game that was banned in England!” The strategy could work. And maybe open up an actual market for AO games. Possible AO rating for GTA 4?
kee - 06.19.07 8:06 pm
Kee makes a really good point. I HIGHLY doubt GTA 4 will be rated AO, (Even Rockstar would not make that gamble with such a cash-cow franchise) but if they work the whole “Manhunt 2 for Wii BANNED in England” angle, they really might spin the whole thing into a violent-game-hype-frenzy the likes of which we have not seen since the Mortal Kombat days. Although I personally think they will play it safe and cut the game’s content down to an M rating, it would definitely be interesting if they stick to their guns and test the market’s waters with a mainstream-targeted AO game..

By the way, the comments do take EXTRAORDINARILY long to post recently. I thought it was just me.
kiddkalen - 06.19.07 11:37 pm
I would ban rockstar. Well maybe not GTA 4, it has some story. I really hated Manhunt and the fact that they did a second one just pisses me off.

@Kiddkalen:
You and Kee are probably both right. I’m sure Rockstar will milk this for as much publicity as they can. My friend sent me a link to Rockstar’s response on Kotaku, and it seems that it’s already working, according to the fan responses I read.
Also, more than likely, they’ll just go back and take some things out. That’s what I figure anyway.
The problem with trying to market an AO game is no one will carry it. And I mean NO ONE. No major retailers are allowed to carry AO games, since most AO games are usually…well…porn.
And even if I’m wrong, and Gamestop and EB will carry it, Wal-Mart, Target, Bestbuy, Circuit City and the like still won’t. And that’s like 60% of gaming purchases right there.
I still remain skeptical of the game. But I think I’ll at least rent it. See if it’s actually worth playing or if it’s just more of the same from Rockstar.

i agree
and I would definitely be surprised if they pushed Manhunt’s AO rating…BUT… if they do… And Manhunt becomes a relative success, then I totally expect them to produce an AO GTA4. (I bet that just a graphically enchanced GTA3 would get pretty close to an Adults Only rating from the ESRB.)
kee - 06.20.07 1:59 am
well GTA4 isnt that far away, so if anything does go down they’d have to do it relatively quick. i doubt that they would push an AO rating for GTA4 but i wouldnt be as surprised with manhunt, just because they dont have as much to lose, and they could possibly gain a ton if they set a precedent with it. also, i doubt they are quite as concerned with it’s sales numbers, since they will make more than enough money of the new GTA. im sure mr. thompson is popping prescription drugs like mother to keep his blood pressure just below a million right now.
ohemgeez - 06.20.07 3:24 pm
OOF, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
gojiguy - 06.20.07 10:58 pm
god damn. i was well looking forward to this game!
aros2k - 06.21.07 5:02 am
You can have sex with dead bodies and microwave a dog in this game.
It deserves the AO and ban.
Kenofthedead - 06.21.07 8:14 pm
It’s been banned independently in Ireland too.
