Buried at the bottom of a couple mainstream articles about the Wii is a slightly different take on the whole “fitness” phenomenon. Mary Jane Zamora is a 50 year old woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2005. After a round of chemotherapy she found herself weakened, too tired to get off the couch. It was then that her daughters brought out the Wii for her to play. Although “exhausting” at first, she was soon playing everyday.
Soon after her recovery she rejoined her bowling league and was deemed its most improved player. “What this game did for me was encourage me that I could still do these kind of things. It came around when I needed it.” Zamora said that the Wii and its games helped her to visualize her new life, after cancer. “My life is coming back. It’s not about loss. It’s about setting aside what I was and evolving into an even better person… this has been a cornerstone.” Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that the simple joy that comes from playing can be really beneficial.

remember kids, what might be a lame simple game for you, might turn out to be an great experience for someone else. Nintendo is changing the industry, not by making new controller or adding a touchscreen, but in a more important and bigger way, get the whole family to play. proof is how “Wii Life Story” always seem to feature a group of people around the console, not to mention video games rarely got media attention for help someone handle depression, injuries or disabilities like the Wii has been doing for the last few months since it was released. Great job Nintendo. You are not competing for attention in the house, but including yourself into the family quality-time, something video games have been missing out since the Atari years.

Nah Fank, she was diagnosed in 2005… I’m sure this was after chemo after the Wii launch.
