In a recent talk with USA Today, games journo extraordinaire-turned-SF author Steve Kent stated in no uncertain terms that expects Wii’s bubble to burst any day now. Wired’s Chris Kohler, feet planted firmly on the other side of the fence, has written up a great piece detailing why he believes this is not going to happen.
Kohler divides gamers into four groups — Hardcore, Casual, Expanded, and Kids — and gives a breakdown of each group’s size, buying habits, and how, if at all, a Wii ‘bubble burst’ would affect them.
The logic is very sound and well founded, but I won’t get into that. In short, the conclusion he reaches is that Wii is going to continue to get all the love in the world. Check it out.

I agree?

Huh, I’m not in any of the four groups, there needs to be something between hardcore and casual.

what does the term “bubble burst” mean?
Gotcha Force - 06.11.07 6:45 pm
I can’t can’t totally disagree with Kent’s opinion, it’s totally possible. But I don’t think it’s going to happen, at least not this year. Nintendo simply has to much momentum going and the other companies have very little or none .

means that something reaches the peak of its popularity and then falls to its death in no time flat.

“Hey if I predict something that might come true, I can say “I told you so” when it does.” Casamassina-style.

it totally, might, kinda, maybe, could, should, uh, won’t burst. Hey, if you are going to make a prediction, go bold. Nintendo will keep its Darth Vader chokehold on the industry for another 2 years

Maybe the Wii will reach it’s peak and stop selling.. BECAUSE EVERYONE IN THE WORLD WILL HAVE ONE?
:B e3 is coming, baby.

I’m not buying this bubble birst for a second. It’s only natural why people are saying that though, considering the huge success of Wii. But look, has the DS burst it’s bubble? If more than anything, I would think the other systems would burst it’s bubble, if it hasn’t already. And the reason I say that is because the Wii is more user-friendly. I’m not worried about the Wii at all. Man, I’m just not worried. Peace.

Remember when they said that about the DS, and then the sales started to INCREASE! Ya, thats what I thought

Holy CRAP! Can anyone help me kill that AT&T ad that pops up?

People and their wacky opinions.

I pretty much agree with Kohler on this one. The thing to take into consideration is that something needs to cause a burst, and I don’t see anything against the Wii (at this point, at least) that could cause such.
On a side note, one of the commenters on Kohler’s post said: “The blue ocean audience is used to buying a device and it working forever, such as a VHS machine[…]” Man, I feel kinda old knowing that a “VHS machine” is more commonly known as a “VCR”…

I don’t see the bubble bursting for the wii any time soon either. The actual technology inside the wii and remote is not very important, what is important is how nintendo decided to present it. It’s simple/intuitve, aestheticaly pleasing and cheap, I think they hit the nail on the head with this system. As a gamer I’d like to see more wii specific games though (wiiplay, wiisports etc.)instead of ports. Also RTS games and RPG’s would wrk great on wii.
gorgo - 06.12.07 2:19 pm
The bubble bursting will have to wait at least until everyone who has been waiting a year for a Wii gets one.

Yeah, I haven’t run into anyone in real life who’s bought a Wii and gotten bored of it yet. And I know a lot of people with Wiis, people who don’t hang around in online forums talking about games all day, which is something I can’t say about any other game console since the NES. (The Atari and Colecovision were that way too, maybe even moreso.)
Sure, there are lots of online fanboys who own 2 or 3 current consoles and have 16 hours a day to play games, and their Wiis are collecting dust since they finished Zelda on about November 28 (because you know, Elebits and Paper Mario are “teh kiddy”), but frankly, they’re so rare in real life that their opinions on the market in general are meaningless.

@Raindog: Meet me.
I bought it at launch, and I’m bored by it except I take it to friends for Wii party demos

So I read through the articles and I have to agree with Steven Kent (@4cr: SteveN!) that: “It’s overpriced, underpowered, and we haven’t seen anything but ‘Wii Sports.’”
But Chris Kohler has really great arguments as well, but I doubt that Nintendo will sustain this kind of growth with Wii for much longer (than 2007).
It’s good to see that Nintendo does well, but I really doubt they’ll be #1 in 5 years (home consoles).

Somehow that’s just the right answer *LOL*
