If you haven’t noticed, the entries so far for Nintendo’s Short Cuts film competition haven’t been all that hot. As such, it’s really too bad that this hilarious Mario Kart parody was made, not for Nintendo’s competition, but for a Harley Davidson-sponsored contest at the University of California.
There have been plenty of Mario Kart parody vids that’ve popped up on the web in the past, but this one is simply in another league. Technically, it must have been extremely difficult to make; try as I might, I can’t quite figure out how it was shot. Hit the link below to check it out, and click here to show some support and cast your vote in the competition.

Wow. I’m guessing it’s stop motion, but damn would that have taken a while! Nicely done.

its boring…must have taken lots of effort but really boring…

I kinda agree with mcheddadi - it obviously took a lot of time and effort, which I applaud, but it was kinda boring.

it looks like they’re actually sitting on something, but i just don’t get it. maybe it was a blue or green box that they filled in.

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like they probably shot the people on green screen riding around and then superimposed them onto the actual scene.
The scene with the shells seems to suggest this the most. The shells have shadows while the rider does not.
But yeah, it probably took a hell of a long time. Kind of boring but impressive nonetheless.

Speaking of the Short Cuts contest, I’ve done my very own entry.

I think there’s a magnet weapon in Mario Kart GP. Not sure about the hammer tho.

was pretty cool, not sure if it was 100% stop motion, but still very cool.
and I assumed they were sitting on green boxes

Not boring at all. Quite charming actually and the lack of voice was a good move.

I think they set the camera up with a tripod, took a blank shot, put the rider into position, then shot again, doing very little photoshopping to crop away everything but the drivers from the second shot and superimpose.

Hey guys,
I directed this video. It was 100% stop motion. 13 days of animation, no greenscreens. Sad some hated it, glad some liked it. Try to wrap your head around how we did the dolly shots.

By the way, we’d enter it into Nintendo shortcuts, but Harley-Davidson bought the copyright from us. Unfortunately Nintendo wants to own it if it goes into the contest. Too bad.
