A Small indie dev from Denmark released a prototype video of a game they’re hoping to get released on the Wii.
The game is called Pollen Sonata. The concept is interesting, and I hope somebody picks them up.

Agreed - VERY nice looking. I would definitely be interested in trying that out.
Eric - 05.30.07 9:05 pm
that is awesome

The “cutscene” was awesome-looking and the gameplay had a very Katamari vibe to it, at least graphically.
I want it.
Mushroom Pie - 05.30.07 10:56 pm
Yes. Gorgeous. I would certainly be interested.

I must be seeing something totally different than every one else. I really like the painted art style, but what the hell are you even doing? Flying around as a piece of pollen in a heavily fogged out field?
I don’t know, I just am not seeing something compelling here.

Not feelin’ this one at all. From the name on down, this one reeks of pretentiousness; the sort of “artsy” game that tries to get by on it’s “artsyness” alone, which honestly, I consider just as bad as the sort of game that gets by on graphics and high production value alone.
I’ve been somewhat disenchanted of these games as of late, spurred, perhaps, by thatgamecompany turning into the ugly, conceited whore of an outfit that it became following the commercial release of Flow (at which point they became bitter, because their precious little game didn’t somehow “revolutionize” the industry, as they were convinced it would, and “should,” in their little dream world).
The permeating mentality that (what are often) half-baked game designs/concepts, typically dolled up with bad poetry during the loading screens, “charming” (read: amateurish) artwork, a little understated piano music, and mediocre execution overall are the stuff of great video games, as long as said concepts are the sort of thing that can be discussed at length and ad nauseam in stuck-up, pretentious indie game discussion panels is almost as bothersome to me as EA being guaranteed to sell a million copies of the same football game every year.
I’m not saying that I hate indie games or anything. On the contrary, I think they’re often wonderful, and, assuming they aren’t conceited jackasses, I can root for the little guy. But I swear, the really obnoxious, pretentious/generically “artsy” developers out there really bug the heck outta me.

W00t! Important to point out my nationality and WE’RE #1 WE’RE #1 WE’RE #1 WE’RE #1!!!
Tyler and Tony, you have to remember that it was a tech video. Of course, as looked right now, it reminded me of ICO, which of course would be a lot of people happy, except me, since I sometimes seem to be the lone hater of ICO in this world…

Cyberg-Ares:
Uh, how would it being a tech demo or not affect my judgement of it being a woefully typical “artsy/indie” game?
Tyler - 05.31.07 5:22 am
The opening sequence didn’t do much for me, but the concept of flying around and exploring an environment seen from an interesting perspective might be quite interesting.
Might be a bit pointless too… I’d give them the benefit of a doubt.

I’d like to see what else can be done with the game. Seems like it’d be nice if it was a little faster, too, but maybe wind is variable? I didn’t like the fog too much, but I assume that could be changed as well.
Dean - 05.31.07 10:34 am
Tyler: Because I assume that it’s painfully empty BECAUSE it’s a techdemo, so a completed version would be fuller.
Cyberg-Ares - 05.31.07 3:22 pm
Tyler: You act as if those supposed ‘artsy’ developers owe you something. But they don’t. Instead of spouting redundant (you can lay that thesaurus down) diatribes why don’t you go ahead and make your own antiartyindy games? -Anything- than the whining you’re doing now. Because just looking at your virulent and probably unwarranted critiscm, you’re as much as a conceited jackass as you accuse thatgamecompany is.
On another note however, ‘Pollen Sonata’ looks charming. But here’s where Tyler and I stop differing. From the tech demo, I assume you control a pollen spore and attract a squadron of other spores probably to get on a bee’s leg or someone’s nose. A vein similar to Mr. Mosquito, so I’m not sure PS’s concept is entirely new. But that’s all I can decipher from the video. Frankly however, it looks boring and I blame it on the concept not being strong enough. Perhaps they can step it up and add Mr. Mosquito elements or dodge behemoth insects flying by. And as Tyler ‘eloquently’ put it, you can go by charm for so long…
Squick - 05.31.07 10:30 pm
I don’t quite get what the game will be like, but one thing I can say is that with those graphics and that music, this would be one relaxing game.

Squick:
OK, first off, what thesaurus? Seriously, the biggest words I used were, like, “pretentiousness” and “disenchanted,” words any middle-schooler should be able to understand. Moving on.
You make it sound like I owe you something when I state my personal opinions about videogames. Instead of spouting contrived, generic, pointless responses in the vein of “If you don’t like it, then go make your own videogame,” why don’t you simply state your own opinions about videogames without bothering me, considering that, as I will readily acknowledge, both of our opinions amount to little more than nothing? -Anything- other than contrived “holier-internet-poster-than-thou” garbage you’re spewing now. Because looking at how conceited and aloof you’re making yourself out to be by finding it necessary to find so much imagined fault in MY PERSONAL OPINIONS OF STUPID VIDEOGAMES, you’re coming across as just as much of a conceited jackass as you’re accusing me of being.

Tyler -
When did That Game Company become bitter? Can you point to something they’ve said, to that effect?
And, following that line, how exactly are they an “ugly, conceited whore of an outfit”?
Mike - 06.01.07 1:43 pm
I like the looks, and intention, of this. But the name could use some work, and I’d like to see more variation of gameplay in the next demo.

Mike:
I’m referring to comments made by employees of TGC, specifically Spore creator Jenova Chen, on the official TGC forums. After IGN posted their (very positive) 7.6 review of the PS3 version of Flow (making it, at the time, the highest-rated PSN game), Chen made a post whining and bitching about their review, going so far as to call the review “disturbing.” Elsewhere, he made nonsense, doublespeak excuses about how (and I paraphrase) “flow should be judged based on it’s content, rather than it’s features.” Seriously, what does that even mean? Taking that statement literally, and judging the game based on content, rather than it’s features, I think the reviews would be much worse. mean, there’s some cloudy water, a few creatures to eat, and, uh…yeah. Not much there, really.
He’s an indie game brat who thinks he made a game that should have had a resounding impact on the entire gaming industry. That’s what bothers me.
Tyler - 06.01.07 4:46 pm
Edit: Oops, hahah. I screwed up.
“specifically Spore creator Jenova Chen” should have read “specifically FLOW creator Jenova Chen.”
Brainfart.
