I love May. It’s not only the greatest month of the year to spend outside, but there’s also no better time to open the windows, grab a beer, kick back, and enjoy some games. Read on to find out what the 4cr staff was playing in May, and be sure to chime in and let us know how you spent your precious Nintendo time in the last month as well.

Mitch:
Unfortunately, it’s been another dry month for me when it comes to gaming. On top of working, planning some major purchases and sleeping ’til noon, I haven’t had a lot of room for fitting anything else in. However, between naps, I’ve managed to squeak in some time with Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX. There’s no better game.
Hopefully my gaming frenzy will pick up next month when Wii games start popping out of the woodwork again.
Vinnk:
I have been enjoying Ouendan 2. It is every bit as good as the first one. I also got Elite Beat Agents, it’s a fun game, but it just doesn’t give me the same vibe.
My friends and I are STILL into Excite Truck. I have played that game more than all my other Wii games put together. I bought Super Paper Mario while I was in the states but I haven’t played it much yet. The little I played was very good, but I will wait until I have a bigger block of free time.
Meanwhile, my bride to be has really gotten into the game Project Hacker and is looking forward to Gyakuten Saiban 3.
Drew:
It’s a been a dry month for gaming for me, too. But things are looking promising for now. My awesome wife just bought me SSX Blur as an anniversary gift. I’ve only had time to play it a little bit, but so far so good. Ah…reminds me of the good old days of 1080 Snowboarding on N64.
Also on my shelf without any time to play is Tiger Woods. What I’ve played so far is really really hard….in a realistic way. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I mean, is it a good thing to bring right into your living room the frustrating chore of learning to drive a golf ball straight? I’ll give this one some more time and see how I feel about it.
Jody:
I’ve been playing Chrono Trigger. Fantastic game. No matter how many times I play it, it’s still great. If you don’t have it go get it now. Aside from that I have been playing Futurama for Playstation 2. I absolutely love Futurama so I was excited to try the game out. The game is incredibly fun, but very hard. Well worth picking up by any fan of the tv series though, especially since they got all the original voice actors for it. The animation style is a little bit weird, but once you get past that it’s a very fun game. Just be prepared to get frustrated!
Edgar:
I’ve been playing Etrian Odyssey on the DS. This game brings back so many fond memories of oldschool dungeon crawler RPGs. If you miss those kind of games, do yourself a favor and get Etrian Odyssey. The other game I’ve been playing is Dungeon Runners on the PC. This is another game that brings back memories…. all those sleepless night playing Diablo 1 & 2 online. Check out my post about Dungeon Runners here.
Greg:
Now that it’s summertime, I have a little more time to play games. Here’s what I’ve been into:
Final Fantasy XII — I’ve been steadily losing faith with the main Final Fantasy series. None of the recent ones have lived up to the Super Nintendo era. Final Fantasy XII changed all of that. This is the best Final Fantasy game since VI. It’s an absolute joy to play, the characters are compelling, and the graphics are beautiful.
Picross DS — I already reviewed this one, but I’ll admit that I haven’t quite finished it yet. I keep unlocking more and more puzzles. I’m not complaining, it’s a fantastic game. This is the puzzle game to get.
Tales of Symphonia — Can you believe it? I haven’t played this before. Luckily, Jody gave me a good deal on it. I like it so far, the battle system is fairly interesting and I dig the anime look. It’ll probably take a backseat to Final Fantasy XII for awhile, though.
Nick:
Twilight Princess – Yeah, so I’m still playing. You have a problem with that? What I have a problem with is the fact that I ever stopped playing this game. I’m only now at the Zora water temple and am in awe. Just picking the game back up and running around the gorgeous world and getting into a more involved, fleshed out and mature Zelda world is amazing. Plus, how cool does the Zora armor look? Sweet!
Super Paper Mario – The game started off slow and I almost didn’t want to keep going, but much like both previous Paper Mario games, once you get a couple hours in the game picks up and the charm grabs you and doesn’t let go. And this is a perfect game for me right now as the puzzles are clever, but it never gets too challenging. It keeps things light, airy and tons-o-fun.
Pokemon Pearl – Bought this when it came out and I am slowly putting time into it. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Pokemon, but this is fun. In a few more hours I will probably (knowing my game playing history) put this down and never pick it up, but the fact that I live with two other Pokemanics might keep me playing a while longer.
Other than that I have been playing a few games after work just to wind down for a few minutes. I’ve played a little Advance Wars DS, Battalion Wars, the new Rainbow 6 on the 360, Guitar Hero 2 on the 360 and a few other odds and ends. I’m glad that I am finally able to work gaming back into my schedule. It’s been far too long.
Benny:
Puzzle Quest (DS) — I know I’m late to the train, but this game is utterly addicting. It’s so addicting in fact that I had to stop and reassess y playtime on it. It’s definitely the type of game where you just grind and grind and grind and end up 3 hours later not know where you time went. Love it.
Daxter (PSP) — I’ll admit it, I loved the N64 days of the collect-a-thon platformer (expect DK64… ugh). Dater harkens back to the good ol’ days without all that cross-platform action mumbo-jumbo that platformers need to come with today to sell (Ratchet and Clank… I’m looking at you). It also helps that the game is BEAUTIFUL.
Super Paper Mario (Wii) — Screw the haters, this game is a fantastic, crazy combination of Paper Mario’s awesome RPG sensibilities and old-school platformers. Yeah it makes me want a new Paper Mario RPG, and yeah it makes me want an old-school Mario 2d platformer… but it sits SO comfortable and confidently inbetween those genres in a way that has truly gripped me. I also love the fact that it not only makes fun of videogame cliches through dialog, but through actions. I’ve sat there and laughed merrily as the game has made me grind through menial tasks that should be boring… but are done with the tongue plated so firmly in cheek that I can’t help but laugh.
Michael Tucker:
Halo 3 Beta – Don’t worry, this temptress’ touch isn’t as good as the touch of a Wii. Wait, that didn’t come out right. Ehhh, anyway, the Beta has it’s own set of strengths and weaknesses, the pinnacles of each being playing with friends on Xbox Live and playing with everyone else on Xbox Live respectively. Let’s just say that before the beta I was only interested in getting the game for its campaign experience and after the beta it still looks like that’ll be my primary motivation.
Earth Defense Force 2017 – Another XB360 title, this game is sure to be a classic. Earth Defense Force, or EDF, is the equivalent of a terrible Japanese sci-fi flick with “aliens” that are really giant ants and spiders that live deep inside the earth(I still don’t get how that works) and huge stinkin’ hilarious piles of bad dialogue. I’m sure it’s obvious that I’m not gonna praise this game for its depth, but somehow, despite all odds, it actually manages to be fun if you have a friend. I dunno, there’s just something enjoyable about killing hundreds of bugs with explosives and machine guns while you and a friend are either cursing the cheap shots the enemies get on you or killing your AI controlled teammates who always manage to run right in front of you as you fire a gigantic rocket. This game is terrible, this game is great, all said, it manages to be terribly great.
Bombs:
Fallout (Mac OS X) — This is a great RPG for the PC/MAC. It is a bit old, but it had a distinct style to it that makes it very memorable. Think of it as a Baldur’s Gate with guns and nukes, and some nice ’50s touches.
Moero Nekketsu Rythm Damashii Osu Tatakae Ouendan 2 (DS) — This game is great. I didn’t really like Elite Beat Agents compared to the original Ouendan, but this game is definately as fun as the first one.
Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3) — This is the latest in a great fighting series. Aoi Umenokouji is kicking ass and taking names in the quest mode!
Beyond Oasis (VC) – I never got around to finishing this great game back in the day since I never got a Genesis. One of the best action RPG that was released on the Genesis, get it now!
Rumas:
It was a Super Mario World VC month for me. Using my
incredibly amazingcontroller mod, I managed to beat the game with almost total completion. What a brilliant platformer. Back in the day, I never actually experienced much of it because of the high level of difficulty. I really sucked at games when I was a kid![]()
Having played it all the way through, I must say I think it’s the greatest game of its kind. Most of the 4cr staff (and most everyone in general) ranks Yoshi’s Island as the best, but for me, SMW is ever-so-slightly better. Absolute perfection, and a pure joy to play from beginning to end.
After I beat Mario, I busted out another relic of the past — Rogue Leader for Gamecube. It’s a game I’ve had for ages, but one that I gave up on long ago because of the totally frustrating level of difficulty. I decided I’d give it another try, and after getting creamed nonstop, I cracked under pressure and used every secret code to get all the upgrades, ships, etc.
That was a good choice. With all of the extras, I was actually able to have some fun with the game, and I was still just barely able to beat it by skin of my teeth. I completed the final mission recently after countless tries, and it was quite a rush. Six years later, I’m still in absolute awe at what Factor 5 was able to pull off at GC’s launch, and my hat is off to anyone who’s ever managed to beat the game (let alone get the medals) without cheating.

I’ve been playing Pokemon Diamond whenever I’m on the go and I’ve finally arrived at Sunyshore City. Besides that I’ve been playing StarCraft in anticipation for the sequel.
Malons - 05.28.07 4:51 am
yeah, i haven’t had much time for anything beyond pokemon right now…
I really wish i had secretly stuck with the series, but because all of my friends would ridicule me if they ever caught me playing it, i cracked and only now have i jumped back into the madness.
My journey through Sinnoh so far is just slightly below the magic that was Kanto, and i’ve nearly ‘beat’ the game, having seen all 150 pokemon from the sinnoh pokedex. I also beat the Elite Four yesterday after some hard grinding. And now i can finally start putting together the dream team of old, with my newly upgraded pokedex.
Good article, although i’m quite surprised to see that only one 4cr staffer is playing pokemon, and is doing so reluctantly!
RockSteady - 05.28.07 4:54 am
even though may here is autumn, still rocking the couch with the metroid prime series, played through MP1 and about halfway through MP2.. can’t wait till MP3
TakaM - 05.28.07 5:14 am
Ouendan 2 and Chrono Cross for me. It’s starting to cool down here too…
marcus_ivo - 05.28.07 5:57 am
I’ll be crying, waiting for the “Wiinter”.
j - 05.28.07 6:42 am
I finally started playing Advance Wars Dual Strike on my DS. I took Contact out because I just couldn’t get into the game: at the first serious-seeming boss I got my ass handed to me, which only goes to show I had no idea what I was doing.
My only problem now is that my DS doesn’t seem to charge on the Korean power grid! I got to level 14 or so on a single charge though.
amanaplan - 05.28.07 6:49 am
I just started playing battle for wesnoth on my linux pc today, I’ll probably stick with that for awhile. later this week I’ll be celebrating my 21st birthday with a bunch of people, a bunch of beer and mario party.
pete - 05.28.07 6:56 am
Pokemon Pearl - I’m still playing a bit, even after the elite four. I’m approaching the 105:00 playtime, which is only 50 hours of my pokemon ruby playtime of 150:00. The game is still great and the area after elite 4 keeps it fresh.
Super paper Mario - I managed to beat this gam eover the weekend and returned it to my friend. The game was really slow to start up, but once it got going it was good. My only complaint is that tehre is a LOT of talking. And some of the area’s seemed kinda dull. However other than that, the game was fantastic (The Whoa Zone, especially).
Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkachi 2 - This game is fantastic. The gameplay is something new, and the battles are always fun. It is REALLY hard to learn how to play, however. The controls may seem a bit confusing, however, once you get them down, it feels like another street fighter.
Super Smash Brothers Melee - I put this back in the Wii, because my brother wanted a challenge. And, I can never back down from an SSBM challenge. This game is still incredibly fun, and only makes the wait for Brawl, that much harder.
Neeks - 05.28.07 7:17 am
Well, I’m hoping Super Paper Mario actually comes out one day in Australia as that’s what I’d be playing if I had the choice
Lem - 05.28.07 7:42 am
Pokémon Pearl - just lvling my team to take on the Elite Four.
Crackdown - maxed all but Explosives stats. The game is a bit of a grind on second time through, but I’m playing it second time (first time on an offline account) to gain the achievements for the XBL account.
Halo 3 Beta - amazing fun, I’ve been playing a lot of Team Skirmish & Rumble Pit. my rank is 17 in rumble pit.
Halo 2 - multiplayer… waiting for Halo 3…
Spider-man 3 (Wii) - … stuck on the stupidly annoying first fight with Harry… garr… it annoys, it does!
Guild Wars - got Elite Stoneforged Armor for my elementalist (with blessed insignias) and replaced my Galigord’s Stone Staff with a staff identical in stats but better in looks.
I think that’s everything.
Jamie - 05.28.07 7:58 am
God I need to get back in GW. But Dungeon Runners is taking all my PC time.
And I want to continue my game of Pokémon, but Etrian Odyssey caught my eye and now my DS time…
Edgar - 05.28.07 8:57 am
I have a good alliance and guild in GW. the insignia update really opened up the armor market, Prophecies had the best armor art but was restricted by set stats, with the insignias now that doesn’t matter, I’m going to have to get a few sets for my necromancer & warrior.
Jamie - 05.28.07 9:19 am
That pictures remind me I have to go to Wendy’s to pick up some Wii toys.
Lego Star Wars II (GC)-The price finally droped so I bought the game and have had a lot of fun blasting away Lego Storm Troppers. I’ve finished the first two movies and have Return of the Jedi left. I think I really like this game because it isn’t painful to play. I don’t need to use gamefaqs to solve to puzzles or to figure out what I have to do next but I do have to stop and think for a minute sometimes.
Metal Gear Solid:Twin Snakes (GC)-I finally found a copy of this game to play. I’ve never played a Metal gear game but am really enjoying the stealth situations.
Final Fantasy V (GBA)-I’m halfway through this game and about to start another grinding session before continuing in the story. My play time is 50+ hours.
I just picked up 2 Gameboy Pokemon games and a Gameboy colour for $4 at a garage sale, maybe I’ll start my first Pokemon game.
Karen - 05.28.07 9:29 am
I’m still putting in half an hour almost everyday into Guitar Hero 2 on the PS2, mainly just because I want to five star Hangar 18 on Expert before I put the game down for a while. In terms of Wii, aside from when people are over and we play some WarioWare, the only game I’ve really played on my Wii lately is Ninja Gaiden. Playing through it after all these years really brought back a lot of memories of watching my dad try and fail to get past 6-2.
And oh my days Rumas, Rogue Leader is so amazing. Man, I remember I picked that up as an afterthought along with Luigi’s Mansion on the GameCube’s launch, expecting Luigi’s Mansion to be the bee’s knees. But then after I popped Rogue Leader in I didn’t take it out of there for well over a week. Truly one of the best games I’ve ever played, and apparently really unappreciated, since I’m the only one I know who even owns the game.
Dopple Boppler - 05.28.07 9:50 am
I was playing Pokemon Diamond but I pretty much put that to sleep. I’ll work on getting all of the Pokemon over this summer to give me something to do.
Besides that I have been playing Castlevania: Circle of the Moon on my DS, Guitar Hero 1 and 2 on my PS2 (I got a sweet deal on them both), and the first Ratchet and clank. Right now I’m catching up on all the PS2 exclusives I missed that I always wanted to play
Arcanis - 05.28.07 9:57 am
Let’s see~
Wii - Super Paper Mario and will buy RE4:Wii Edition on Thursday
PS2 - God of War + God of War II
DS - Just starting on Yoshi’s Island
And I’m really getting antsy about Super Mario Galaxy…
jd - 05.28.07 10:10 am
Guild Wars: Prophecies - Oh man, got this one at a bargain (about US$20 equivalent) and I am kicking myself for not getting into it earlier… It’s like a medieval PSO, which is the perfect online game for me. I’ve haven’t been a fan of MMO’s since I got burned out on the beta of Ragnarok Online, but playing GW is like rekindling an old flame.
Moero Nekketsu Rizumu Damashii: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 - It’s awesome. That’s all you need to know.
ShoPao - 05.28.07 10:38 am
Lessee… Jump Ultimate Stars still has its claws firmly in me, even in its broken state I’m giving SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters DS plenty of face time, and Magic Online continues its neverending presence. Additionally, older games have come back from the game to demand my attention(namely Burnout 3, Diablo II, Halo PC, and F.E.A.R.) while I wait for the urge to continue Digital Devil Saga 2 to pick back up. Successfully (so far) fighting the urge to pick up Puzzle Quest and either of the Diamond/Pearl monsters while waiting for my budget to recover.
.Pi - 05.28.07 10:43 am
Earth Defense Force is a badass game, and that brief review by Tucker was spot on.
vektron - 05.28.07 11:33 am
I’ve been playing Diablo II (and loving it all over again). But it will get neglected for the next 14 days because I just started a two-week trial of World of Warcraft. Wife REALLY doesn’t want me to ever PAY for World of Warcraft, so I either have to get my fill in 2 weeks, or find a way to convince her of its merits. Also picked up Oblivion again because I never got very far into it a few months back when I was playing it.
KiddKalen - 05.28.07 11:50 am
Jody, you’re my hero!
Have you ever played Seiken Densetsu 3?
Clay Handley - 05.28.07 12:07 pm
amanaplan: you need to go to an electric supply store (preferably a little hole in the wall joint where they only sell weird chinese stuff…trust me, they’re easy to spot, just a bunch of extension cords in the windows and stuff) and ask for a ‘to-ran-su’ (토란스?) = ‘trans’.
call me if i can help in any way! 010 2217 0200
N Rumas - 05.28.07 12:28 pm
Wii: Technically, I beat all of my Wii games, but I still find myself going back to Super Paper Mario, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Metal Slug Anthology. I’m trying to work through some of my VC games, (Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts and Bomberman 93, specifically) but I seem to keep forgetting how big of a pain some of them are. Fun, to be sure, but definetly a pain. Basically, I’m waiting for July, which is when Mario Strikers Charged hits the shelves.
DS: I have two games I technically have to beat. I’m on the last (the unlockable) case for Phoenix Wright, but I haven’t had much desire to get back into it at the moment. The other one is Bomberman DS (not Bomberman Land Touch,) which takes a while anyway. Otherwise, I’ve been going back and playing my favs, specifically Mario Kart, Sonic Rush, and Elite Beat Agents (which I still have to beat the last song on the hardest difficulty…but I’m not worrying about it right now). I dunno why so much of 4CR staff dogged on the game. I love it. And I hate rythm games generally. Of course, I haven’t played Oduean, admittingly…and probably won’t. I don’t see it as worth the import price (not as big of a Japanophile as I used to be…)
PS2: Mostly, and most importantly, I’m still working through Okami, which is the greatest game no one ever played. After that, I got SC III to eat up my time, and eventually, I’ll work my way towards Metal Gear Solid III.

Wow, this is insane. I finally got the Wii, and I’m having a blast. Been playing a lot of Wii Sports. Man, is it fun. Oh yeah, I’m typing this from my Wii browser. Pretty sweet stuff. The game I’m playing now, well, like I mentioned, Wii Sports. Plus, right now, I’m just excited I have the Wii. Been trying to get one since launch. Peace.
matt - 05.28.07 3:00 pm
I’ve been playing me some Odin Sphere. Lovely, lovely game. Going to work on .hack//GU 2 next, then who knows. It’s going to be one game-filled summer.
Lone Wolf - 05.28.07 7:56 pm
Not playing anything right now because I sold my Wii to a friend at work for a $50 profit. His kids wanted one bad.
I just finished Resistance and got all the skill points and rewards. Kinda bored with the PS3 right now, thinking of picking up a Wii again.
Sean - 05.28.07 7:56 pm
Nick: Dude! I just got to the Zora temple, too! Don’t feel bad.
Benny: Late to the train or not, I have been grinding at least an hour a day into Puzzle Quest– almost as if I can’t help myself– since the day it came out.
Leigh - 05.28.07 8:11 pm
Finally decided to finish Pikmin and Pikmin 2, i’ve had the first one since launch, but i could never continue either of them because… i’d always feel way too horrible when any pikmin died, which is inevitable, I think once i finish them both I’ll challenge myself to finish them without pushing the reset button. *oh but my precious pikmin….* I absolutely LOVE the game though, its so creative, especially the clay-like concept art of the second game.
Been wanting to pick up Okami… but like I did with Resident Evil 4 (which was lucky, i almost gave up), i’m waiting in hope that they’ll release a Wii version. please…
Razo - 05.28.07 8:22 pm
@Razo: A Wii Okami? That would be great…but unfortunatly, Clover no longer exists, and Capcom has said there are no plans for the idea in the near future…I would pick up the PS2 version just in case…but ya never know.
OOF - 05.28.07 9:36 pm
Right now, I’m playing AmplituDS (homebrew DS adaption of the PS2 game Amplitude…totally awesome) and Etrian Odyssey, also known as one of the most awesome hardcore games there are, as well as Super Paper Mario and Mystical Ninja on the Virtual Console. Love that game, but I wish they’d gone a little lighter on some of the localization stuff…I mean, Kid Ying? Bleh.
9th Sage - 05.28.07 10:48 pm
I’ve been playing old stuff because I blew off all my money on my link cosplay and Fanime 07. so, playing twilight princess still, I’m like, on my 6th run of the game. I actually picked windwaker back up too. Besides that, 4 swords adventures and some Pokemon Diamond, although progress has been slow on those 2.
ZeldaGamer56 - 05.28.07 11:17 pm
Nick - Thanks! It’s weird, everything else I brought with me that needs to charge works fine with just one of those W500 socket things - digital camera battery, my Dell MP3 player, even this computer.
amanaplan - 05.29.07 2:20 am
I’ve been playing Pokemon Diamond since it was released, and I feel it’s best feature is the Wi-Fi GTS in Jubilife City. A close second however, is Pal Park. The only thing I don’t like about it however, is that once the pokempn are in D/P, they can’t come back. Pokefan Forever, Caleb Smith. (Wi-Fi trade me at name Caleb, Psychic sprite.) (Or, battle me, name CVSceptile!)
