Reggie’s speech at the Nintendo Media Summit was supposed to be embargoed until Friday. The internet did not agree, and Reggie’s first official defeat has been at the hands of a series of tubes. You can read the entire transcript of the speech over at IGN, but there are some choice tidbits you might want to see first.
For one, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree is going to be online in a major way. We’re talking eight-player simultaneous online brain competitions. How Nintendo’s network can interface with eight brains at a time is beyond me, but thus is the Nintendo magic.
That’s pretty funky fresh if I do say so myself. Big Brain Academy was a blast in multiplayer, and I can’t wait to pummel you with my superior intellect. It’s also interesting to note that Big Brain Academy is set for release on June 11th, a full two weeks before the supposed first WiFi enabled titled to hit the US, Pokemon Battle Revolution.
Upon further commenting (thanks Kenny!), turns out I read too much into Reggie’s statement. No “direct” online play, but you will be able to play with 7 other people (in your living room I assume) AND upload your scores via WiiConnect24. Sorry about the stupidity.
Reggie also confirmed that on top of the already confirmed MP3 action we’re getting this summer, we’ll be getting Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros: Brawl and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass before the years end. It’s shaping up to be one helluva summer AND year for Nintendo fans everywhere. Get excited kiddos!

Wow, this is going to be a hell of a year for the Wii, as if it wasn’t off to a good start already.

This article is full of win.

I can’t wait. Well, I guess I can.

“How Nintendo’s network can interface with eight brains at a time is beyond me, but thus is the Nintendo magic.”
I lol’d.

Reggie has only one weakness: the tubes.

“What this shows is the monthly cumulative sell-through for hardware in the US for this year. If you can’t see it clearly there in the back, the red line all the way at the top is Nintendo DS. The second line is Wii. The third line, interestingly, is PS2, not PS3. PS3 is down there at the bottom, just holding off Game Boy Advance. [Laughter from the crowd]”
This is the definition of win.

His speech doesn’t say that 8 people are playing together online:
“Then there’s Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. Up to eight players that can compete simultaneously and then compare scores with others that are thousands of miles away through the WiiConnect24 system.”
It just says that you can have 8 players simultaneously, not that they are online. It then says you can compare scores online (through WiiConnect). But I don’t see anything that suggests live online play.

I’ll believe it when the games are in my hands.

I would be more excited if i did not live in the UK, i doubt we’ll get any of the above this year; well maybe MP3 by christmas. Even on the SSB:B dojo there’s a severe lack of “Planned for 2007 release” on the UK site (it can be seen on the US site though.) I wish Nintendo would pull this together
Sneb - 05.23.07 7:29 pm
Something tells me not to get my hopes up. Especially for Mario Galaxy.
RageTreb - 05.23.07 7:47 pm
That speech sounds pretty “funky fresh” Reggie.
Namssorg - 05.23.07 7:58 pm

Namssorg - 05.23.07 8:56 pm
IM IN THE UK AND WE STILL DONT EVEN HAVE PAPER MARIO…. SIGH…
Ultramagnus - 05.23.07 9:47 pm
before the end of the year, yes. but do we have any dates letting us know if any of those games are coming out during the summer? aside from BBA.
Atomsk - 05.23.07 10:54 pm
although, i suppose it would be good for brawl to come out later than sooner, so i can have control over my life for a few extra months.
Atomsk - 05.23.07 10:56 pm
Haha, great South park reference.
Juja - 05.24.07 5:00 am
I wouldn’t worry too much SNEB - both Brawl and Galaxy are low on translation needs, so should be easier to get to Euroland.
Willozap - 05.24.07 7:51 am
It took like ten minutes of Googling to figure out that you meant Metroid Prime 3. >:(
Shih Tzu - 05.24.07 2:09 pm
I’m a bit dissapointed. Nothing said that we didn’t already know (presume). And nothing solid for Europe…
Pedro UK - 05.24.07 3:15 pm
There wouldn’t happen to be video available of this speach, would there? Or audio?
