Request: Please hear me out before you laugh and scorn!
Being the owner of numerous GC controllers, a Hori Digital Pad, and a GC controller extension cord, I didn’t see the need to purchase a VC Clasic Controller when I was in the US a few months back. I had my Wiimote for NES classics, my Hori pad for SNES games, and my GC pad for N64 titles. I was all set.
Then I downloaded my first SNES VC game, Super Mario World. Simply put, the game is impossible to play with the GC button setup, as jump and run are relegated to the B and Y buttons, way too far apart to press in tandem. Completely, totally borked. I thought about running out to Yongsan to try and track down a Classic Controller, but I was enjoying a rare work-free day at home, and didn’t feel like taking the two-hour trek to get there.
After staring at the Hori pad for a few minutes in frustration, it hit me: glue gun, plastic fork, tape. Bingo. Close-up pic and detailed instructions after the break. Enter at your own risk.

Yes, it’s a monstrosity. But it works! Here’s the deal:
First, you need to make a massive hot glue mountain that touches START’s T. The most important part of the whole ‘mod’ is that this mound needs to be very high; without enough leverage, Y requires so much effort to press that playing feels totally unnatural.
Next, take a nice, solid plastic fork, and break off two of its prongs. Tape them together at the same curve but opposite directions. Now you’re ready to build a bridge between Y and the mound of glue.
At this stage, you have to work very fast. Apply a nice spot of hot glue to both the hardened mound and the Y button, then immediately secure the ‘bridge’ in place with its arch facing up. Now take the glue gun and ‘lock’ both ends in place by sealing them on top. As long as you’ve built your mound high enough, you should be all set.
You’re now faced with another challenge, however, as you need to get the B button up to the same height as the Y button/bridge. This is best done in steps, as it just doesn’t work if you try to do it all at once. Apply a spot of glue, wait until it starts to cool off, and then smash it down with your finger to make it ‘pressable.’
Keep doing this until it’s flush with the bridge. As you can see in the pic, it’ll get gradually wider as you build it up; that’s a good thing, but you need to make sure it doesn’t fuse itself to the bridge. Once it gets high enough, try pressing both the Y bridge and the B button at once, as you’ll be doing in the game to run/jump, and see if it feels comfortable. If not, use a match to melt the glue on top of the B button and remold it until it feels right.
Finally, you’re going to need to get the A button, used for the spin jump, a little higher as well. It doesn’t need to be flush with the others, so just a couple levels of glue, pressed down, should do the trick.
There you have it! If you own a Hori Digital Pad and haven’t yet purchased the Classic Controller, you now have a perfectly viable money-saving solution for SNES VC games (or for SMW, at least!). I tried and dismantled at least fifteen configurations that day, but finally hit the sweet spot. It may not look very nice, but trust me, it feels just right

I think you mean the B and Y buttons !

oops. thanks — fixed.
N Rumas - 05.19.07 1:37 am
cool controller, if the D-pad was a joystick.
DarkTide - 05.19.07 1:37 am
But… What if you need to press X? It is now the lowest button on the controller!
ANARK-E - 05.19.07 3:10 am
hehe, i was focusing on SMW here, but X can be raised just like the rest if you want.
like i said, though, first and foremost a SMW-specific thang

o_o

… … … fair enough, im gonna stick with my classic controller though.

Wow! You are really proud of yourself aren’t you?
It’s always nice when an idea works.^^

Sweet merciful crap~
Interesting mod indeed. When lazyness strikes, invention comes shortly there after.
Rumas, you really should get a classic controller; It’s quite nice. Or a SNES to GC adapter from that retro usb site.

I have a Hori too, and I use it now and then for VC games. I prefer just holding my index finger on the Y sideways, and my thumb on the B. Works fine with Donkey Kong Country, and it’s kind of a new challange.
Or you can try holding it slightly tilted, so that the tip of your thumb is on the B, and the lower part on the Y.
Perhaps gutting a SNES controller and replacing it with Hori parts is cooler, looks like a dog sneezed on your Hori.

Very inventive. You are obviously engineer at heart. I approve.
fox montage - 05.19.07 8:04 am
You destroyed your controller, but man, like Fox Montage said, very innovative, if it works, well, good stuff man.

Yeah, I noticed how frooked up the GameCube controller was for SNES games whilst I was playing Donkey Kong Country and Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. And it’s not that I don’t want to buy a Classic Controller either, it’s just that seven months after launch and I’ve still yet to see any Wii peripherals in stores aside from a couple nunchuks.

I’m guessing you don’t have the technical ability/knowledge to just rewire the contacts inside the controller?
At any rate - if it works it works. Needs more duct tape though. Maybe just some for show.
How comfortable is it? Looks - not very.

I remember the Megaman Collection for the GameCube suffering from this same problem. The PS2 version had the buttons in the correct arrangement while the GC version had them backwards. I’m not sure why they did this. When it was eventually released, I think the Xbox version actually let you change the configuration. Go figure.

I’ve been looking for these Hori controllers for _MONTHS_. Please, please, tell me where I can buy one!
CRIMExTHINK - 05.19.07 1:45 pm
You forgot to add a coke holder.
Dym - 05.19.07 4:18 pm
Wow, how do you control Mario? I’ve always used my index and middle finger for jump and run. Do you use just your thumb?
Gooble - 05.19.07 4:44 pm
I applaud you.
gojiguy - 05.19.07 4:49 pm
handofgod: yeah, if i had the know-how to rewire it, that’s what i would have done
it’s actually extremely confortable. my thumb (not even a big thumb, mind) easily covers both the Y and B buttons at the same time. Feels totally natural.
crimexthink: i bought the controller from estarland.com about six months ago for like ten bucks brand new. don’t know fi they still have them, though…

You should probably just go ahead and kill yourself.
Or…. Go to nintendo and tell them you’ll commit suicide if they don’t make wireless N64, SNES, and NES pads!
Hurricane_mario - 05.20.07 1:17 am
I ran into this very same problem, but instead I just went out and spent the $20 on a classic controller.
ENiGMA - 05.20.07 11:30 am
Can someon explain what the problem is that is being solved here?
Blee Blee Bloo Bloo - 05.20.07 11:57 am
I agree with Fank, just shift your hand into an okay sign and play like that. its kind of odd at first, but when you get used to it it’s great.

Tim and Al from “Home Improvement” would be proud!

Does anyone know where to buy a Hori Digital Controller nowadays?
I remember about half a year ago some online shop sold out its backstock, but I missed the opportunity back then.
Ive been searching the web back-to-back without any result. Does anyone know there to get it? If you can help me, you will be on my top 10 hero list forever!
Thanks!
