In a recent statement that will excite me and, at most, maybe a dozen other Western gamers, SEGA announced that it is working on a DS installment of its popular Sakura Taisen (Sakura Wars) series. This popular “Steam Punk” SRPG series has never been released in English and it is unlikely that the DS incarnation will either.
This new game is a departure from the standard “strategy RPG with dating sim elements” style that made the series famous. The DS version will be a “Dungeon RPG”. I am not sure how I feel about that, but I am happy that SEGA will be bringing back characters from previous games, including all 3 squadrons (Japan, Paris ad New York). If you understand what I just wrote, I am sure you already plan to buy this game. I know I do. For the rest of you, keep coming back to 4cr, I hope to introduce you all to this fantastic series.

OH I’m interested. Very interested.

I don’t now how good it will be. It sounds like there will be less plot and more mindlessness. Don’t get me wrong, I like the series. I’m just unsure about this announcement. I’ve never much liked the spin-off crap this series has produced.

‘the standard “strategy RPG with dating sim elements” style’
LMAO

@Dead_Prophet
I agree. But hopefully SEGA won’t screw up with this. After the horrible sales of the ST 1+2 remake on the PSP, this series REALLY needs to score a home run here or future console versions hight not happen, which is sad because this game would work perfectly on the Wii.

I’m crying now. I’m seriously crying now.

@Jeremy
Both games were done by the “Overworks” team at SEGA, but RED (who did Bonk’s Adventure) also helped with the Sakura Taisen.

The real tragedy in the USA is that we have almost all of the anime; but none of the games.

Sooooo… Does this mean there’s hope for a Skies of Arcadia sequal/remake/whatever?
…the same people who made Sakura Taisen made Skies. *Crosses fingers*

Joy! Did you know that there is a Sakura Taisen Cafe in Ikebukoro, Tokyo? I went there when I visited Japan in 2003. It’s filled with character art, themed decorations, food, and even a small Kobun! Not to mention the gift shop, which is full of awesome goodies along with an arcade unit for Sakura Taisen Columns.
I’ve still got a mini Oogami Ichiro on my keychain!

I have never been there. But I have been to the Sakura Store in Osaka. Maybe if I have a break during my TGS trip this year, I can check it out.

I was reading that Sakura Taisen is getting translated into Russian by one company. (Yeah, I don’t quite buy the rumor, but…)
I threw up a little in my mouth. Because I’m jealous if it is true.
