With the massive double-whammy that was Super Paper Mario and Pokemon, April was a month that made us happy. Happy enough to go crazy on daddy’s drums even, not unlike Baby Edgar here. In’ee cute?
While these two gems took up most of our playtime, a lot of other titles swept in and won some sweet rebel lovin, too. Read on to find out what they were, and don’t forget to chime in and let us know what you spent the month playing.

Jody:
Started out the good old month of April playing Pikmin and Metroid Prime (two games I never played in the Gamecube days) and they are both fantastic. Got Super Paper Mario the day it came out, played about 12 hours worth, and got bored. Blasphemy, I know. It’s sad because I absolutely love The Thousand Year Door. I don’t know what it is about Super Paper Mario I don’t like, but theres just something about it. Maybe its all the backtracking, and trying to navigate Flipside and all that. Graphics are great and the writing is top notch, but the actual gameplay left a lot to be desired for me. Of course, now I am playing Pokemon Pearl and it’s GREAT. People are always asking me, “Hey Jody, how are your Pokeymans?” To which I of course respond, “Let me show you them.”
Drew:
Hotel Dusk — Great little game…really enjoying it, though not making much progress because I haven’t spent much time with it. My DS I play only at lunch or when I’m waiting for a haircut, dentist appointment, etc. So not very often. As much as I love the game, I have to admit it doesn’t hold my interest enough to make me pick it up and play it when I’m at home with other stuff to do.
The Dig (via Scumm on my MacBook) — This is one of my all-time favorite games, harkening back to the glory days of LucasArts. I finally found my old legally purchased PC copy from a decade ago and used Scumm to load it up. It’s still a great game, though the graphics are much worse than I remember. What I loved about this game was how entrancing it was…the ambient music just drew me in. Playing it now after so many years, I have to admit it’s not as incredible as I remember it. I suppose that’s how it goes with many games and pastimes we enjoy in our youth and then revisit as adults. I’m not sure what it is, but something gets lost over the years. Still, I’m enjoying figuring out the puzzles all over again. I’m amazed how much I’ve forgotten.
Mii Channel — Things have been quiet with the Wii lately. I haven’t bought any of the new games that I want, like SPM or SSX Blur, but I will when I have more time and money. Or maybe my wife will buy them for me for our anniversary (hey honey…hint hint…yeah right, like she reads this). Anyway, my wife and I have been making lots of Miis of our friends, though. It’s addictive fun.
Edgar:
Super Paper Mario — Haven’t had much time to play it, just beat the first boss this week. I love the game but the pacing is a little too slow.
Pokémon Pearl — After placing Pokemon aside after the red/blue version, I never thought I’d be going back to it. But after hearing everything that was new in this version… ok I’m lying. Just hearing that it was online made me want to play it again. Since all of my friends that I used to play with back in the day aren’t leaving close-by anymore, online play is a great addition for me. I’m loving every moment of this game; even played 8 hours on the first day. Hadn’t done that with a game in a while.
Greg:
Pokemon Pearl — Hi, I’m Greg, and I’m a Pokemonaholic. I have been ever since Red and Blue hit US shores. The GBA games were disappointments, but Diamond and Pearl are utterly fantastic. They may even surpass Crystal as my all-time favorite. I’m not likely to catch them all this time, but I’ll still end up putting dozens of hours into this addictive game.
God of War — Yeah, yeah, I’m behind the times. I finally picked this up when I saw it for $15. It’s a blast. I love the combat, it’s stylish and deep. I’ll probably pick up the sequel when I’ve finished this one.
Mitch:
Pokemon Diamond — Finals week is one of the hardest times of the year for any college kid, and even at a private liberal arts school, my case is no different. Unfortunately, because of a lack of money and a lack of time, the most I’ve been able to eke out of gaming these days is dumping almost two days of time into Pokemon Diamond. There’s something about this damn game that makes me just want to keep coming back for more.
Tamagotchi Corner Shop 2 — Ha ha, laugh all you want. It’s a great game with a lot to offer! And, to answer your question, no, I don’t care if women won’t touch me! At least Mametchi loves me.
Tingle’s Balloon Fight — A friend of mine hooked me up with a copy of this Club bonus, and let me tell you – it’s one hell of a hilarious game. I have no idea why it’s so fun (it’s essentially a clone of Balloon Fight, but with two screens), but all I know is that I can’t stop trying to beat my high score these days. If you ever get the chance to nab a copy of it, go for it. It’s definitely worth its weight in gold.
Gongonzabar:
Diablo II — Every few years I pick this game up again and play a new character. This time I’m a cow-killing Amazon that throws javelins of lightning. I must have bought Diablo II three times by now, and it is still as fun and exciting as when I first played it.
Pokemon Diamond — So yeah, I’m a Pokefreak, but how can you not be? I haven’t played Pokemon since Red and Blue, but just the memories of actually playing those two games reinvigorated the Poke-itch that had laid dormant for years. With all the classic gameplay plus all the new features and wi-fi, it’s too hard to resist picking this up. So hopefully I’ll soon complete my quest to catch them all and become the greatest Pokemon trainer ever. Maybe if I get so great, they’ll name a Pokemon after me one day. Go Gongonzabar, use your pound attack!
Vinnk:
I finally found an American Wii! It was at the 18th store I looked at. I picked up Zelda, Metal Slug Anthology and Super Paper Mario, and I have been playing them a lot. When my friends are over it is still mostly Wii Sports and Excite Truck that I play. That game is so great. So dear readers, I am going back to Japan next week. While I am here, what other games should I pick up?
Michael Tucker:
Being the ever poor college student and deciding (for once) not to blow cash on new games, I have once again descended into the realm of indie games. My latest love/hate addiction has been Darkside Adventures. It’s an old school platforming adventure that brings along some of that old aggravation as well, but these sorta games are like gamer whiskey. They may make you rowdy and ready to explode, but they put hair on your chest. I can almost spot one if I look really close. Err, anyway, it’s a great game to kill a week or a weekend depending your tolerance and skill.
Kevin:
Pokémon Diamond — The Pokefever got ahold of me. Maybe it’s because I was able to grab a copy off the shelves 3 days prior to the official release date, but I never expected myself to join the land of Pokémon one more time since Yellow back in my wee days.
Super Paper Mario — Although I took a break from the game in the last few days (only at Chapter 2-2…), SPM will most likely keep me busy in early May before starting out Okami on PS2. I love the level design in SPM, it allows me to sit back and play for short sessions — exactly what I need right now, when I have little to no time to play games on the big screen.
Punch Out!! (VC) — Even though I play this little baby all the time on my Game Boy Micro (oh the noes, emulation!), I couldn’t steer away from buying it on the Virtual Console.
N Rumas:
This was a super-busy month for me, but I still managed to have some VC fun. Punch-Out!! and StarFox 64 kept me so entertained that Super Paper Mario (it’s coming in the mail soon!) hardly crossed my mind.
As far as I’m concerned, both games are still to this day the absolute pinnacles of their respective genres, and that’s saying a lot. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and drop the fifteen bucks ASAP. Money well spent, trust me
![]()
Benny:
Super Paper Mario — I’ve always loved the Paper Mario take on the Mushroom Kingdom and this game distills that into its essence. I’m loving everything about this game. The subtle (and not so subtle) throwbacks to other Mario (and Paper Mario) games, the clever puzzles, the surprisingly deep story, and the hilarious dialog. I’m not sure Peach, Bowser, and Luigi have ever talked this much… but if they are this funny they should certainly talk more. NEEERRRRRR!
Pokemon: Diamond — It’s Pokemon, but better as always. What’s really surprising me is how much I’m enjoying the really subtle graphic style.
Loco Roco — This is the happiest game on the planet, and I’m loving every twisty, turning, sing-songy moment of it. Once you “sync in” with the controls… it’s the happiest dream you’ll ever play. MOJA-MOJA!

Final Fantasy 12: Still plugging away through it, one day i’ll finish it even!
Pokemon Pearl: Imported it from the Americas to my convict nation, fear the wrath of a man without his Mawile, fear it.
Super Smash Brothers Melee: Been playing my brother and one of his friends, who are both very good. (rules no items, one on one, random level) Far better then facing off against a level 9 opponent, and it’s getting me ready so when SSBB finally comes out, i’ll be ready (Thank the lord for hopping, ’cause my Kirby wouldn’t have a chance against there Link’s oitherwise, cheating gits).
Bainick - 04.29.07 11:03 am
Super paper mario: Its a nice game, but why is it in small chapters
.
Metal Slug Anthology (wii): Never played metal slug games before, but gave this a try and loving it
La Mulana: PC retro MSX like metroidvania game, terrible graphics but fantastic gameplay. Really tough to.
captain_duck - 04.29.07 11:14 am
Mostly Minish Cap. Don’t like it so much. Quite frankly, it would have been better without the talking hat. All he does is tell you what to do all the time, which is not exactly what you want in a puzzle adventure game. For me, Minish Cap is just a careless rehash of previous Zelda games with somewhat pointless puzzles, unnecessary shrinkage, and a contrived plot.
It’s not all bad though, it just doesn’t play like a Zelda game should.
fox montage - 04.29.07 11:15 am
Just got Super Paper Mario and just started 2-2.
Thinking of picking up Yoshi’s Island DS… My g/f can’t stop talking about it.
@Greg - I got GOW recently and am loving it also.
jd - 04.29.07 11:34 am
I’ve been playing Super Paper Mario pretty hard core. We Love Katamari and God of War. I will probably pick up one of the new Pokemon DS games today. I’ve got an itch and I can’t shake it.
Kyle - 04.29.07 11:43 am
Minish Cap: And too few real dungeons. Also, what is it with walls you have to bomb with no real visual clues?
Willozap - 04.29.07 11:44 am
Super Paper Mario - I am about to beat this entertaining yet highly-disappointing game. No complaints about the graphics, the writing is passable, with some moments of brilliance, but gameplay is completely MEH. Sadly the game peaks in World 3 and never feels as clever again. Some of the best things about Thousand Year Door are totally gone (and missed). Your sidekicks (Pixls) have zero personality (they only speak one time, when you first find them) and zero backstory. Also, somebody scrubbed the game with Strategy-Be-Gone, as there is none to be found here. There is no incentive to use the pointless cooking system (Every item does practically the same thing!) There are many other things I don’t like about it, but I’ll shut up, this is not the place.
Fallout2 - Just started playing this gem for the first time. I played the first one about a year ago and had fun. The atmosphere and style of the Fallout games are reason enough to learn the sometimes-tricky interface. I think my reaction to Super Paper Mario has caused me to seek out the deepest RPG’s I can find. Because I am also playing…
Oblivion - Slowly making progress for the past 3 months. Loving it.
Nethack - I don’t know what to say about this masterpiece.
Deus Ex - Never played it, about to start (right NOW!)
Diablo II - After watching each of my friends play this game for hours over the years, I am finally taking the plunge and starting my own character. Can’t WAIT to get that CD-Key from my brother today!! See you in the sewers, Gongonzabar!!
KiddKalen - 04.29.07 11:48 am
I’ve been playing Super Paper Mario and WoW, but that link to origmaihero.com gave me an urge to replay Cavestory!
Clay Handley - 04.29.07 12:03 pm
LOVE THE BABY DRUMMER !!!!!!
MacraMan - 04.29.07 12:19 pm
The Dig is awesome. I always get stuck at the same points, which is kind of funny. Lucas Arts really was the king back then. Sierra had its moments as well, but they just weren’t as consistent (plus, you know, the whole “You forgot a random item, so die!” idea).
Personally, I’ve been playing two games the most: Pokemon: Diamond (which is getting more fun, I always hate the opening stretch of Pokemon games after playing a few of them) and Eets: Chowdown on XBLA.
I remember there was a lot of stuff about the PC version of Eets on this site. I never got around to buying it since I don’t play many games on my PC, but I love the Xbox 360 version. Totally worth the $10.
Tony - 04.29.07 12:19 pm
Stupid Pokemon not comming out in England for liek another 80 years! I’m too stubborn to import it from USA as my GBA Pokemans are on a Euro region GBA cartridge and I want to be able to import them to DS.
I’ve been playing Pokemon Ruby and contemplating picking up TMNT for GBA because I heard it’s so good.
jgoreham - 04.29.07 12:31 pm
At this moment, Super Paper Mario and R-Type III: The Third Lightning (how did I miss this game back on the SNES? God, it’s like instant win) on my Wii, and possibly Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or Cave Story on my PC, and Cooking Mama on my DS.
9th Sage - 04.29.07 12:34 pm
I beat Super Paper Mario the week after I got it,
I’m still playing Pokemon Diamond/Pearl.
I think I’m going to start up Fire Emblem 9 (Path of Radiance), because I really have the urge to play a Fire Emblem game right now.
I’ve also been quite into Punch-Out!! again.
SereneCrimson - 04.29.07 12:45 pm
I’ve only really played World of Warcraft and Hotel Dusk both excellent games. Level 62 in WoW and making good progress in Hotel Dusk. The story is compelling enough to pull me away from WoW for a few hours each day.
Mike H - 04.29.07 12:56 pm
Replaying Cave Story: Hard Route. Playing Game & Watch Gallery 4 for GBA, Sid Meier’s Pirates, and Sam & Max: Reality 2.0.
I left my DS at home for exams, and it makes me sad.
Handpuppet - 04.29.07 1:04 pm
Pokemon Pearl consumes me.
Stelios - 04.29.07 1:28 pm
I still don’t have a Wii.:( So, what did I spend my time playing, Ninja Gaiden for Xbox. Actually, it’s a really really good game. I loved it. But still, I want a Wii. I guess the good side to this is that when I get it (I better get it
), there will be a lot of good games to play. I mean, I can’t even keep up with the DS, so really, I’m already good to go. Wii is taking it to another level. There are so many great games to play, there is no way I can find the time to play them all.
Matt - 04.29.07 2:16 pm
The only games I’ve had time for as of late are Punch-Out on the Virtual Console and Guitar Hero 2. I still really need to get Super Paper Mario and Poke`mon, but alas, no monies right now~
Dopple Boppler - 04.29.07 2:20 pm
PS2: Bully
Wii: Call of Duty 3 and Elebits

EdEN - 04.29.07 2:24 pm
Pokemon Pearl - This game is awesome. 3rd badge Get! And only 20 hours into the game. (All my Pokemon are at an average level of 40 so far.
)
Ragnarok Online - This game is addictive. Very addictive. I play on a private server, but it still maintains fun value.
Shiro786 - 04.29.07 2:28 pm
I’ve gotten nearly EVERYTHING in pokemon Diamond, (excluding Arceus, and a few other even pokemon like Darkrai) and I still keep playing! Nearly all of my pokemon I use are (Deoxys, Lugia, Suicune, Tyranitar, Metagross, Groudon, Salamence, Torterra Dialga, Rayquaza, Typhlosion, Latios and Latias, Staraptor,Giratina, Garchomp are my level 100’s) Lvl 100. I obtained most pokemon, (400) and I STILL keep playing. Awesome game. Nuff’ said.
P.S. All EV trained, and NO AR OR ANY CHEATS USED!!! NO WALKTHROUGHS EITHER!!
Travis - 04.29.07 2:28 pm
Pokemon Diamond is eating my life… 20 hours in seven days… that’s crazy for me. REALLY crazy. Anyways… back to training my pokemon. Gotta get my third badge…
(I got the game on Monday.)
Crimson Warrior - 04.29.07 2:40 pm
Paper Mario, Kid Icarus, Super Ghouls and Goblins, and good ol’ Guild Wars.
Is anyone else having trouble finding Hotel Dusk? It hasn’t even shipped a second time to anywhere in downtown vancouver. I’ve had it on order since it sold out the first week. What is this, month’s later?! aargh!!
designerwhite - 04.29.07 2:56 pm
This weekend I’ve been consumed to play Castlevania DOS. Thank you EB Games in Canada for finally giving me a chance to buy his game at a reasonable price. Guitar Hero II on PS2 and VC Super Mario Bros. I’m also on Level 4 of Super Paper Mario.
Karen - 04.29.07 3:24 pm
fire emblem : sacred stones
broken sword 2
okami
jeremy - 04.29.07 3:52 pm
Puzzle Quest (DS) - Too addictive for words. Has even put a damper on my Zelda TP playing.
snewbury - 04.29.07 3:57 pm
Just finished PuzzleQuest on DS, next up is Killer 7 on the WiiCube. I bought it based mostly on the raves from this site so it better be good…or else!
schtum - 04.29.07 3:58 pm
Pokemon Pearl. Seriously, why do they even bother making any other videogames when all I want to do is play this game?
This must be what those WoW freaks feel like.
Lemond - 04.29.07 5:05 pm
I finished Super Paper Mario, allowing me to finish The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, which SPM pre-empted. Of course, I started side-questing the living hell out of both of those games when I knew I was close to the end. I did both pits before finishing SPM and took over every racket/warehouse/compound/shell game/lemonade stand in G:BE. By the time I actually finished the story missions, I was promoted from Capo to Don of NYC in a matter of minutes. Now, drunk with power, I execute any pedestrian that says something stupid.
MR_DNA - 04.29.07 5:38 pm
Pokemon Diamond.
I beat all the gym leaders.
Then my AR broke…
((MUST BUY NEW ONE))
Jack - 04.29.07 6:13 pm
FFXII, only 50 hours into it. easily one of the best games I’ve ever played.
SPM, I think I’ve got one or two more chapters to go, but I haven’t played in a while because of school and…
Pokemon Pearl. It’s just so damn good.
Atomsk - 04.29.07 6:22 pm
Pokemon Diamond, Oblivion. I’m addicted to both.
Capp'n - 04.29.07 7:47 pm
What’s this AR people are mentioning? Action Replay maybe? Not to sound like an old crank but, if that’s what you use, you’re taking the point of playing the game out of the game… cheaters.
jd - 04.29.07 8:25 pm
Nothing Nintendo at the moment. Rather, Taiko no Tatsujin 7 CS - yeah, I’m not typing that full name out - and GuitarFreaks&DrumMania Masterpiece Silver (along with watching the first season of Kaleido Star) have been taking up the bulk of my time.
Spiritsnare - 04.29.07 8:33 pm
Just finally got a Wii, so Zelda TP, Metal Slug Anthology, and Super Paper Mario. Gears of War, Pokemon Diamond as well. I obsess with making the perfect 6-man poke’squad.
DarkTide - 04.29.07 9:24 pm
Pokemon Diamond, my first Pokemon game and I can’t put it down.
I got Super Paper Mario and was very disappointed; the visuals are great but everything else is boring. I was not crazy about the last Paper Mario on the Game Cube either, I don’t see myself buying another Paper Mario game again.
Also playing Donkey Kong and Zelda DX on my Game Cube Game Boy Player. After seeing the Zelda Retrospective I hunted down Zelda: DX, Ages & Seasons which I had never played. After playing Donkey Kong on the VC, I wanted more and I remember reading that the Donkey Kong on the Game Boy was a complete remake and extension of the classic game, I also remember EGM giving DK Game of the Month when it came out. DK got the award over the latest SNES Street Fighter 2, which pissed Capcom off.
Marco - 04.30.07 2:21 am
Before my newer computer’s motherboard died I was playing lots of King of fighters and Metal slug… How ironic, the guy above my post is named “Marco”. lol
Now I’m just waiting for the release of Radio allergy, I hear it got delayed… again.
NPC - 04.30.07 5:52 am
Uhh, is anyone else hypnotized by Kororinpa: Marble Mania?
I heartily recommend this excellent diversion. It took up most of my April.
fush - 04.30.07 8:59 am
Zelda TP: i like to take my zeldas slloooww.
Mario 2: still one of my all time faves.
Air Fortress: badarse game with badarse music (especially The Advantage’s cover of it!)
Ninja Gaiden: will never get old. not even the first level.
Warlords(Atari): best party game ever.
still lookin for a wii…
sean but not heard - 04.30.07 9:03 am
If anyone has an Xbox and hasn’t picked up Ninja Gaiden, I highly advise you to get it. The game is just pure class. I actually played through it twice. Twice. For me, that saying a heck of a lot. A very high quality title, and also very fun. Pick it up. Peace.
P.S… You can probably find it cheap in the used section at your local BlockBuster. I got mine for under $10.
Matthew - 04.30.07 11:36 am
@jd - Thank you, I’m glad to know I’m not the only geezer who thinks AR is cheating and can’t understand why people would want to ruin their games with it.
As for me, I really got sucked into Pokemon Pearl this week. This is the first Pokemon game I’ve ever played (I was in high school when the originals came out, there was no way I would be caught playing them then). I’ve logged 24 hours so far, which is a lot for me these days.
I should be playing Lord of the Rings Online right now, but miy copy hasn’t arrived yet. What I played of the beta I really liked, though. I’m playing a Hobbit Burglar named Erdric (10 points for anyone who knows that name).
Before Pokemon came along, my time was being sucked up by Super Paper Mario. I was really enjoying it and I plan on getting back into it as soon as I finish Pokemon. Once that is done, I’ll need to go back and finish The Godfather, which is another great game.
Oh yeah, and then there’s Civ 4. That disc has barely left my computer since I bought it almost 2 years ago.
Confusatron - 04.30.07 11:49 am
I spent this month and part of the last mainly focused on beating Resident Evil 4 (PS2), along with myriad other titles (Final Fantasy XII, Paper Mario). Yes, I’m two years late, as usual.
Baramos - 04.30.07 12:16 pm
This month’s been a crazy gaming month for me, one in which I got quite a few games finished. I beat the DS version of Puzzle Quest, stomped all the way through Fire Emblems 1-5(4 was the best, definitely! Go Shanan and Leaf!!!), finished up Phantom Brave, started Disgaea, revisited Twilight Princess for a second play, and put money down for Odin Sphere next month. I still need Pokemon Diamond, but Disgaea will hold me til then….
LunarTakiro - 04.30.07 12:20 pm
You know, I started Phantom Brave but found it so different from past tactical RPGs I never finished it. Is this a horrific mistake?
Baramos - 04.30.07 1:39 pm
JD: We prefer to call ourselves “Software Penetrators”, thankyouverymuch.
No really, I was only going to use the AR to bump my Pokemon some levels, and maybe catch some legendaries, but it broke on my ass…
They still don’t even have the codes for the legendaries…kink number 2 in my dastardly plan to rule the world with an iron fist, funded by a global trading monopoly…
((double-bumbed))
Jack - 04.30.07 3:10 pm
Hm, lots of games this month…too many!!!
Tales of the Abyss - If you BOUGHT FFXII, it’s really time to store it in a dark cabinet somewhere and play this great RPG. It’s deep, no doubt. You may need a dictionary in some parts. However, the battle system is addictive, and the game itself is very easily the best rpg I’ve played this year.
Puzzle Quest DS - Tycho, bring it, bitch!
Zelda: Twilight Princess - Yes, I finally managed to procure a Wii from my local game store, and you’ll pry Zelda from my cold, dead hands. I’m digging Elebits and Super Paper Mario, too, as well as all the old skool classics.
Pheonix Wright DS - Objection!
Final Fantasty III - Not the best, but I’m still slogging my way through it. It’s a great carry-on rpg.
I’m still considering whether or not to wait for Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, and I might pry my old Xbox out of the closet (Hah hah, inside joke) to play Crimson Skies. Man, I wish there was a game JUST like that, but more expansive.
Sadly, I must say goodbye to World of Warcraft. WoW, you’ve held my attention for far too long. Adeiu~
…any one want to buy a hunter/shammy?
Jangalian - 04.30.07 6:12 pm
I bought Kororinpa, but did so in the middle of my move, so I haven’t even cracked the shrinkwrap yet. I did play about 10 hours of Super Paper Mario though. Great game. Whets my appetite for the real Mario game.
That, and the release of ColecoDS has sent me into a full-on nostalgia frenzy.
Oh yeah, I can’t forget my favorite game of all, which is watching 4CR post smug stories about a small indie publisher and then “disappear” them when they realize they screwed up. Luckily for my amusement, RSS readers are forever….
raindog - 04.30.07 9:18 pm
PS2: Burnout Revenge, Kingdom Hearts (yeah, the 1st one)
PC: Metal Slug series (*cof* emulation *cof*), diablo 2 (
ashn0d - 05.01.07 7:08 am
Well, to me it’s a shame you didn’t finish Phantom Brave Baramos, but it’s really a love-it-or-hate-it experience. I’m in love with the changes from previous s-RPGs, but if you didn’t get as addicted to the battles, you might want to play it to the end for story purposes, at least. There’s LOTS of fighting to be done in the endgame, though, so if it wasn’t your thing, maybe Disgaea is better for you.
LunarTakiro - 05.01.07 11:54 am
