NGamer has an interview up with Takeshi Iizuka, producer of NiGHTS: Journey Into Dreams, in which the Sega veteran divulges lots of interesting info on the highly anticipated title. Iizuka comes across as a genuinely nice guy who’s extremely passionate about both the game and the experience of developing for Wii, and that bodes well for the final product.
My original excitement over the game, which was off the charts, suffered a bit of a kick in the groin when I read a very negative ‘inside track’ story about it at Boss Rush that has since been taken down. In it, the author basically claimed that NiGHTS for Wii is a classic example of a game in development hell, and he sounded like he knew what he was talking about, unfortunately.
As it is, that post is long gone (for whatever reason), and Iizuka sounds mighty enthused about his new project. I’m remaining extremely optimistic on this one — it might just be the Wii title I’m most looking forward to

There’s talk of two control methods, wouldnt it be awesome if the second option was using the VC controller. I know I’d be happy as happy can be.

It’s too bad that many of the answers in incredibly vague PR speak that often doesn’t really answer the questions. Here’s a rough translation:
“Q: Will the music in NiGHTS still change based on the mood of the Nightopians?
Takeshi Iizuka: We are very fortunate to have Mr. Hataya, the original music composer from the first NiGHTS game aboard creating the new soundtrack. Since the game structure is completely revamped as we added a lot more game volume, we realistically didn’t expect to do the same things we did in the original NiGHTS. We like the mood-enhancing soundtrack feature very much and want to do something very special collaborating with Mr. Hataya. We promised that there will be a lot of new and exciting ideas for “Journey of Dreams”.”
Translation: No. We have the original composer, and he’s doing something else that we promise will be cool.
“Will you be bringing back the ‘A-Life’ system?
Takeshi Iizuka: The A-life system was a very popular feature of the original NiGHTS game that we’ve love to include, but we’re currently investigating all options.”
Translation: No (mainly based on the strategic use of the word “but” to hint at this answer without explicitly stating it).
I’m still cautiously optimistic about this one. And hey, if this works out, could we get a next-gen sequel/port/expansion of Rez? Please?
