While I found Ang Lee’s take on The Hulk to be a rather dull overall experience, there was one thing I really liked about it: Eric Bana as Bruce Banner. His portrayal of the tormented character was, I felt, very believable and sincere, and I’d hoped to see him reprise the role with a more fitting director.
That’s not going to happen, though, as Universal has announced that Edward Norton will assume the role in next year’s The Incredible Hulk, to be directed by Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2, Unleashed). Personally, I’m feeling rather ‘meh’ on the whole affair at the moment, but that’s nothing a wicked teaser trailer couldn’t change in a heartbeat, so I’ll keep an open mind. What do you think of Norton as Banner?

I just don’t feel Norton as Banner. Bana was good, although the movie really wasn’t. Norton would make a better Super Villain than Super Hero, I think.

Bah, Edward Norton is an amazing actor, and I’m convined, can, and will be better than the dude in the first Hulk.
Not that I’ll see it either way, Hulk blows.
duderdude2 - 04.17.07 1:01 am
i dont know why everyone hated the first hilk. “uuuuhhh, the GC was bad” go cry about it, if i want good GC ill play motorstorm (and me bored out of my mind).
alright, enough low blows. maybe my Love for the hulk and jennifer connolly over-rides my need for graphics.

WHY!?
(Not to Edward Norton. To them making another Hulk movie.)

So maybe the Hulk wasn’t a great comic book movie, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad movie. Maybe everyone was all over the Spiderman and X-Men movies as a mark of quality, and even though Hulk wasn’t up to snuff compared to them, it wasn’t all that bad.
Hoob - 04.17.07 2:15 am
Yeah the last movie really doesn’t justify another one.
On the Edward Norton note…
Please see American History X, Fight Club, 25th Hour and The Illusionist (to name a few) then get back to me.
Robotron - 04.17.07 2:23 am
Planet Hulk would make a good movie.

‘So maybe the Hulk wasn’t a great comic book movie, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad movie.”
Um, I think you meant ” that doesn’t mean it was a bad movie.
duderdude2 - 04.17.07 2:41 am
I think Eric Bana was a great Bruce Banner and while I don’t think Edward Norton is greatest initial visual fit, I think he could be a pretty amazing replacement once you look past that.
Him and the new director may make the new movie a worthwhile action flick.

Billy Zane.
mizzle - 04.17.07 2:59 am
lol, billy zane. the phantom!
for the record, i liked the hulk movie more than spiderman 1/2, both of which were torture for me to sit through. ok, the first hour of 2 was okay, but after that it was torture. x-men was a bore, too, but i liked the second one okay.

I’ve been feeling meh about movies for the past 5 or 6 years now. Welcome to my world

The Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets, and losing makes him angry. So even if you are winning against the Hulk, you have already lost. In this sense, the Hulk himself is invulnerable, and therefor uninteresting.
When you have a character like this, what do you focus on? You focus on the human element. They did it with Superman, by giving him love interests, compassion for all human kind, and a child. They do it with the hulk by making Bruce Banner a man who can’t control the Hulk, doesn’t like having that alter ego just waiting below the surface, but loves the freedom of being the Hulk.
Go back and read the comics. The Hulk has never been about smashing things. The TV show was, and that is where people get the misconception. The Hulk is equal parts Frankenstein’s monster and Jekyll and Hyde, and both of those are stories about human drama, not needless destruction.
I will admit that Ang Lee’s Hulk is slow moving at times, and I am also perfectly willing to admit that when the Hulk is destroying tanks it is the most fun to be had in the movie. But the movie is (rightly) story driven. And the story is excellent.
I am worried that this new movie will appeal to the “I want to see Hulk SMASH!!!” crowd. I’m hoping it won’t, and Ed Norton gives me hope for that. (I do wish they had kept Bana, though, for just a little continuity.)
Wupideedoo - 04.17.07 5:50 am
I didn’t think Ang Lee’s Hulk was dark enough. A lot of the dialogue was wooden and corny, Bana as Banner overacted and the Hulk himself looked like Shrek on roids. Hopefully Norton will give this new Hulk a soul. I think the director would do well to go back and look at movies like Firestarter, Dark City, The Butterfly Affect(yes I went there), and Starman where the protagonist has extraordinary powers, but those powers also make them a “freak” who always fears their power. A protagonist who will be shunned by society and hunted by the powers that be because their power poses a threat.
silkylove - 04.17.07 6:13 am
Man, he’s gonna do a whole lot better at Fight Club now. I just hope he doesn’t end up having a lot of conversations with an imaginary, big, green Brad Pitt.
Effervescence - 04.17.07 8:01 am
Isn’t this supposed to be the -unrelated to the last crappy hulk movie- version? I read somewhere that “The Incredible Hulk” is a completely different kind of Hulk movie, somewhat like Batman Begins was to the Schumacher Batman movies (That were based more on the feel of the old TV show.)
Either way the Hulk never really appealed to me.. but I hope they do it right for the fans.
Namssorg - 04.17.07 8:15 am
i thought the first hulk was great. given it was the first in the series for the comic book (all 1st movies struggle cause they have to setup so much story)… (except for Batman ‘89). either way — the hulk was very entertaining to me.
trainwrecka - 04.17.07 8:44 am
lol Very believable and sincere. You guys and your wacky humor.
Baramos - 04.17.07 8:52 am
Bah! Bruce Campbell as the hulk!
shorty1k - 04.17.07 8:55 am
Does anyone else feel like the only good thing about Ang Lee’s Hulk was Sam Elliot?
TheRunningboard7 - 04.17.07 10:12 am
I’m glad they’re starting over with the new Hulk movie, I prefer my Hulk angry and without Daddy Issues.
As far as Norton goes, he’s a superb actor and can definitely pull this off. He’s got a lot of range and anger (American History X, lol) and could be a good Banner.
tratch - 04.17.07 10:24 am
You know, I wouldn’t mind these movies if they’d actually follow the plot a little bit. The Hulk’s war with that super-smart fellow (the Hulk’s opposite, being weak and super intelligent to the Hulk’s strong idiocy…they’re both green, by the way) wouldn’t make a half-bad flick.
Baramos - 04.17.07 10:24 am
Eddy Nortonini FTW. He’s one of my favorite actors, and he may make the next Hulk something awesome.
Dean - 04.17.07 10:29 am
Bruce Campbell as the Hulk would be amazing, but I don’t think he fits into that style of movie. If he had a chainsaw on his arm, that would be another story. And by another story, I mean Evil Dead. There needs to be another one of those movies.
Atomsk - 04.17.07 12:57 pm
D:
That’s all I can say.
It is waaaaaaaaaaayyy too early to be rebooting the series. I thought Ang Lee did a beautiful job, Hulk is one of my favorite comic book movie, mostly because it DIDN’T take on all of the modern comic book movie clichés, which I guess upset a lot of people’s stomachs. One of my favorite movies period maybe.
Why not reboot a real pooey one like Fantastic 4?
Dylan - 04.17.07 3:59 pm
I was really scarred of the tv series as a child
my brothers and sisters loved the show
and I would scream everytime the main character would start turning green,
I even remember on Mister Rodgers, they were showing the guy who played the man in green and even with out his make up I was still screaming,
I wouldn’t be able to tell if this time if, I saw the movie who would I be screaming at more the “hulk” or “edward norten”
because would I get so excited
a combination of my worst child hood fear and the man I drool over the most!
I would definately look forward to this!
Ps I don’t actually scream in theaters, i still hide my face,

Lol, the few seconds I saw of the first Hulk movie (the Ang Lee flick) was overseas on a pirate TV station that was broadcasting it back in 2003, I think. I guess he was fighting tanks and in the middle of it, his shorts disappeared and all we saw was big green ass
Lol, clearly a rough cut…
DCSimian - 04.19.07 5:27 pm
Also, for the record, is it me or does that pic of Ed Norton remind anyone else of a younger Gary Oldman?
DCSimian - 04.19.07 5:28 pm
i agree with a few of you in that i dont see why they are making yet another. regardless of if it’s independent to ang lee’s. the first one was not that successful to warrant another one. i also dont really understand why they would switch main actors. i love edward norton a ton but it just seems wierd to me to switch it. im sure he will do a good job, he always surprises me with his take on things, but a good job doesnt make up for a needless, most likely crappy, rehashing of a franchise. its like in team sports, where a kickass star player will help but you need a solid backup. i know theres a big trend in the last 5 or 6 years of doing remakes and sequels to notable franchises but this seems a bit ridiculous. its only been like 2 or 3 years (i think…) since the last one
