In his latest ‘Multiplayer’ entry at MTV.com, Stephen Totilo relates a personal revelation he experienced upon popping Super Paper Mario into his Wii for the first time: Good art design can completely neutralize technical strengths/weaknesses in graphics processing.
Though some don’t seem to get it, I couldn’t agree more with what Totilo’s saying. Take a game like Okami, for instance. Try as I might, I can’t name a single title for 360 or PS3 that has as much sheer visual impact.
This kind of thing — it might be called an illusion, I suppose — is what Wii’s going to need, as it obviously can’t compete on a technical level. Let’s hope Super Paper Mario is just the beginning of bold, pioneering art design in Wii software.

ILLUSION = EPIC

The argument will probably become moot once companies try more often to think of interesting art styles instead of just super-realism on PS3/360. It’s eventually going to have to happen as the market gets more and more crowded, games are going to have to differentiate themselves from each other more.
It’s not like we could point out many games in the early years of the PS2 that were about super-neat artistry, they were mostly just about “look how much more polygons we have now than before!”
Personally, I’d argue stuff like Viva Pinata benefits from an interesting art style and superior graphics technology. It doesn’t make Super Paper Mario or Okami any less impressive in that respect, but I feel like sometimes people push this idea that these newer systems somehow aren’t capable of that same thing.

yup, Im a strong believer in this, thats why games aiming to look realistic and can’t help but fall short, ie; the GTA series looks like crap.
basically, it can be completely summed up with “as long as the ingame graphics live up to the art direction, the game’s aesthetics won’t age”
why would you want to make your game look realistic anyways? it only limits what you can do creatively with level design, character design, art direction, animation, absolutely every single aspect of the graphics
TakaM - 04.09.07 11:50 am
now, i may be totally wrong, but isn’t the wii more powerful (processor/graphics)than the ps2? if so, there’s no reason games couldn’t look better than FFXII, which in my opinion is better than most if not all current wii games. if devs would just put square’s effort into the game before releasing it we wouldn’t end up with games like spider-man 3, which looks bland and empty. though SPM does look quite fantastic, just as wind waker did (though i never did like the water much in that game, why the hell could they have had at least two shades of blue). art direction people, art direction.
Atomsk - 04.09.07 12:12 pm
As a professional artist, I realize that sometimes limitations produce the greatest amount of creativity. Whereas not having boundaries leaves you sort of roaming around withotu a clear focus. Does that make sense?
Anyway, great read. Good art direction is essential for making a good looking game. It’s absoultely essential on an underpowered machine like the wii. But it’s no less important for a PS3 and XBOX game. Awesome graphics can’t hide good art direction. Lousy artwork and poor vision look the same HD 1080p as they do in 480p….just a lot more crisp.
It’s all about balance.

“GTA series looks like crap.”
I’m not a big fan of the series, but I wouldn’t argue against its art style. Perhaps the PS2 isn’t the best system to pull off all it wants (draw distance, amount of objects, etc), but I think their overall idea was strong. GTA has been pseudo-realistic most of the time, even in terms of pure character designs.
Tony - 04.09.07 12:45 pm
Sure, the PS3 and 360 can be used for amazing art styles. But the problem they have is that they’ve been designed from word go with a focus on realism, as if photography was the most expressive form of visual representation available. (Which it isn’t, by the way).
Willozap - 04.09.07 1:02 pm
Wii Sports fits this argument. Sure, you don’t have sweat dripping off of your Mii’s nose, but the style fits the gameplay and actually enhances the experience. How cool is it when your friend’s Mii comes up to bat in baseball? I don’t care that there aren’t tobacco stains on his striped pants.
David - 04.09.07 1:14 pm
Art design is extremely important. Any system, regardless of graphical prowess, would be worthless if developers did not know how to utilize it. Okami and Super Paper Mario are good examples.
But, good gameplay still is the most important thing.
I remember an issue of Next-Gen where they touched upon this same subject as a response to a reader mail (Good graphics vs Good art, and how they are different). This was back in 1997 I think.
shingo - 04.09.07 2:55 pm
What I find interesting about all of this– is that it applies everywhere. I can find more enjoyment from a single hand drawn frame from a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon (no text required) than I can from most photographs. It’s such personality, and it’s something that is very Nintendo
Namssorg - 04.09.07 3:40 pm
This is why Yoshi’s Island looks better than God of War
Touch FuzZy, Get DizZy - 04.09.07 7:13 pm
And why 2D Kof’s look better than most 3D fighters (including Kofs)
Touch FuzZy, Get DizZy - 04.09.07 7:15 pm
and so forth…
Touch FuzZy, Get DizZy - 04.09.07 7:16 pm
I agree, but I also think that the more graphical power, the better. For example, Super Paper Mario looks fantastic, but it would DEFINATELY benefit from being HD… It would look even more crisp and clear, which is a kind of look they’re trying to go for already.
A great example of Art direction combined with power, would be Gears of War. A lot of people kind of assume that the game is all “shitty trying to be realistic hd” graphics, but no no no… The wonderful amazing stylized graphics and environments create such a surreal and amazing setting… It just makes the game so much more interesting and makes it feel so much more polished. Think about it, videogames are a mainly graphical medium… So graphics are important.
Limey - 04.09.07 8:12 pm
This is one thing at least that Yoshi’s Island DS didn’t fall short in. They kept the same sort of beautiful design as its predecesor which was the main reason I kept on playing the game!
Bainick - 04.09.07 8:15 pm
just a few things I want to comment on:
“but isn’t the wii more powerful (processor/graphics)than the ps2?”
the gamecube was more powerful that the PS2
“Gears of War.”
Gears of war really is a beautiful game, they found a really good balance of realism and accentuation, made for a great style
“Yoshi’s Island DS”
man I hate yoshis island DS.. its complete garbage compared to the snes original, in every single aspect.
TakaM - 04.09.07 10:57 pm
A game with the Wii’s graphical capabilities can definitely make great looking games.
It comes down to creativity and ingenuity by the designers. Frankly, most game developers lack the skill to be able to do this effectively anymore. Games like Wind Waker and Okami further drive this point home.
Whether games will look better in HD or with greater graphical power is a moot point; of course it’s going to look better. However, there’s also the issue of the amount of work needed to produce those better graphics, and whether it makes even that significant amount of difference.
In the case of the Wii, a great looking game like Super Paper Mario obviously doesn’t need PS3-powered graphics; even without said power, the game still looks fricken fantastic.
David Park - 04.09.07 11:28 pm
For GTA, the box art was actually cool (this goes for Vice City and San Andreas as well) but i don’t really see any hint of this style in-game. The graphics were actually dull and uninspiring.
shingo - 04.10.07 2:13 am
I will always be a Nintendo Fan, but i think it’s possible to make games with good art design AND graphical power.
For example please check Little Big Planet and fLoW for the PS3 or Viva Pinata for Xbobx60.
And on the Gamecube Metroid Prime, FZeroGX and DK:Jungle Beat all have fantastic style and graphical power - more than every Wii game so far (imo).
Bodo - 04.10.07 2:38 am
all graphics are is illusion. Little Big Planet is the first game that i’ve thought ‘wow, i wish the wii could do that’, as that’s where i want to see nintendo games go, I want to play Mario with Mario looking like a real plastic toy, that’d be great!
666 - 04.10.07 3:53 am
666: mario as a real plastic toy, what a totally killer idea
i totally want a clay mario game, myself. like the old nintendo power covers.
N Rumas - 04.10.07 4:33 am
Forgot about Wind Waker? That game’s STILL one of the pretitest, slickest, most beautiful games out there because of its style and how well it’s used.
Style is definitely gonna be more of an influence, properly stylizing things can offset the “ugliness” of a game. Look at GTA on the PS2, ugly as heck but the style makes up for it (because it’s more cartoony because of its sense of humor than a serious realistic game).

And only to complete, art direction colorfull and strange things, for example: hl2, sotc and even gow (gears), have “realistic” graphics, and have a incredibly art direction

BARIŞ ÇOCUK
Adına BARIŞ koydular
Yaşamla BARIŞIK olsun diye…
Adına Barış koydular
Savaşa karşı dursun diye…
Adına Barış koydular
Barışta çiçeklensin,
Yazsın, çizsin diye…
Adına Barış koydular
Savaşta ölmesin diye…
Adına Barış koydular
Dünyaya barışı yaysın diye…
Ben Barış’ım dedi,
Savaşı durdurmaya gitti.
Barış çocuk
Savaşın kurşunlarıyla
Dünyayı savaşsız göremeden
Toprağa düştü…
Yeşerdi, düştüğü yerde
Ağaç oldu zamanla…
Ve ağaca da BARIŞ adı verildi
Adına savaş koyanlar,
Barış çocuk gibi
Ağacın dallarını da kırdılar.
Ama yine de
Barış fikrini yok edemediler.
Barış çocuk yaşadı
Sonsuza dek,
Barış ağaçlarına can vererek
Yeni doğanlara
BARIŞ adı verdirerek
Barış adına birçok insanı birleştirerek…

BARIŞCIL BİR DÜNYA İÇİN
Beyaz, sarı, kırmızı, esmer, kara
Tüm tenlerin
Aynı yolda kol kola barış için yürüdüğü,
Barış için imza verdiği,
Ela, siyah, mavi, yeşil, kahverengi,
menekşe gözlerin
Barış için parıldadığı
Barışın sevincini taşıdığı
Anlamına sevgi kattığı,
Yürekleri ısıttığı,
Gönüllere heyecan yüklediği,
Düşünce özgürlüğünün
Sevinciyle buluşulduğu,
Aynı alanlarda el ele yaşandığı
Birbirlerini zenginleştirmeye devam ettiği
Tüm insanların…
Dünyayı değiştirmeye kalkanların
Öncelikle kendilerini değiştirmeleri gereğinin
Ayırımına vararak yaşandığı,
Şahsi hesaplara, çıkarlara
Ulusların alet edilmediği,
Başkalarına adalet dağıtımının
Silahla yapılmadığı,
Eğitimle, bilimle, sanatla gerçekleştirildiği,
Herkese demokrasi dersi verenlerin
Savaşa, savaşta ölenlere
Seslerini çıkarttığı,
Çocukların güldüğü,
Çizecek, yazacak kağıtları bulabildikleri,
Hayallerini genişletecek kitapları okuyabildikleri,
Tellerine, tuşlarına dokunabilecekleri müzik aletlerine
Ve gördüklerini, duyumsadıklarını
Aktarabilecek fotoğraf makinelerine,
Kameralara sahip olabildikleri,
Silahlara değil,
Gençlerin mutlu olmasına katkı verildiği,
Farklılıklarının değerlendirildiği,
Tüm bu yaşananların, yaşatılanların içinde
Herkesin mutlu olduğu,
Sağlıklı, neşeli, bol okumalı, gülmeli, sevgili,
Harika bir dünya diliyorum…
Hoş kalın, güzel kalın…
Çocukları, çiçekleri, kitapları,
Barışı sevdiğim,
Savaşı sevmediğimdendir tüm feryadım…
