Oh man, I’m getting excited. Sega of Europe has published a list of Nights: Journey Into Dreams details online, and here’s a quick summary for you:
- Masks allow NiGHTS to shape-shift into a dragon, a dolphin (Ecco, anyone?), and a rocket
- Change scenery according to real-world seasons with the Forecast Channel
- Seven dream worlds to explore
- Exchange items via WiiConnect 24
I don’t know about you guys, but low poly or not, I just about flipped when I saw the first scans of the game. This news, especially the potential for Forecast Channel implementation, gets me even more pumped. I sure wish Winter 2007 didn’t seem so very, very far off…

I never played the original. Heck, I think about 27 people owned the system it played on. So what’s the big deal?

Implementing real time weather into games via the Forecast Channel is a great idea in theory. But it only updates like, what, every six hours or something? Now, implementing some real time news changes, that would work swimmingly.

this game is going to be awesome. and hooray for real-time(ish) weather effects!

“Journey of Dreams is being developed by SEGA Studios USA for Wii”
I wonder why they’re not handing it over to Sonic Team in Japan…
The last project that this studio worked on was Shadow the Hedgehog. Please oh please oh please don’t screw it up and put NiGHTS in a monster truck or something.

This game is such a YES even if it is being developed in America.

I hate forecast channel. Take a look at Oceanside, California, it doesn’t update for like 12 hours!

Awesome news about Nights: Journey Into Dreams for Wii. I too am really looking forward to this title and think that its visuals can only get more impressive in the coming months. For being approximately 7 months away from release, I say there’s a good amount of polish that can be done. But honestly, it looks really solid as is. Changing weather based on Wii’s Weather Channel? Now that’s cool. Smart Sega, very smart. There is more to Wii than motion sensitive controls…

Hold on, it only says it uses Forecast Channel to update the “seasons”, not the daily weather. I don’t know why you’d need the forecast channel to figure out what season it is, but then I also don’t get the appeal of “real” weather. Would people in Florida never see snow? Would people in Seattle only see rain? That would suck.
@Dopple: Brilliant! Gameplay literally ripped from todays headlines! Imagine a cop game where your walkie talkie crackles and a Stephen Hawking-type voice comes on and says “7 dead in post-office shooting”, so you run over to the post office and… i guess you’re too late to stop the shooting. Never mind.

I still don’t know why I should be excited for this game. I never played the first one and I can never tell if people are pumped because of nostalgia for the original, of if it really was a good game. And if that were the case, it should already have a sequel.

006 not every good game gets sequelized. for instance if i ever found out about a beyond good and evil sequel i would probably jump around for a few minutes then cry some very joyful tears. anyways I didnt have a saturn and never played nights but this game is def on my must own list

Nights into Dreams was Sega’s premiere next-gen title for their Sega Saturn system, meant to go head to head with Mario64 at the time. A lot of thought went into it’s creation and it really shows to this day. Why hasn’t their been a sequel before? Who Knows? Sega is sitting on a lot of AAA properties that have languished in obscurity for years. The original Nights is the kind of game you can lose yourself in while becoming mesmerized by the soothing music, smooth gameplay and surreal environments. Personally I couldn’t be more excited for a game.

Yeah, I’m playing BGE on PC right now. I only wish it had game pad support like Psychonauts does.

3 masks…
Sounds like a certain Zelda title.

The feature sounds more to me like they’ll be matching the seasons, not specific weather patterns… which theoretically they could do with a clock of any sort, much like on the Saturn. It would be pretty damn cool if it matched the weather going on outside, but I’d imagine Nintendo would have to keep that Forecast Channel a heck of a lot more up-to-date lol.
