In this wallpaper you’ll see the evolution of Mario, from the platformers to pinball, and from golf to driving karts.

I dig it.

Wow. They’re totally missing Mario from Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and the original Mario Bros.

It’s funny how he devolves back the the Super Mario Brothers 3 Mario several times during the evolution (3 was the only game to have Racoon, Frog and Tanooki Mario if I’m not mistaken). And where’s the Super Mario 64 Mario?
rfruit - 04.04.07 10:00 am
Yeah.. the Super Mario 64 mario was quite awkward
Even his cover-art rendered version was a bit weird. Still figuring him out in 3D I suppose.
My favorite is still the Super Mario World mario sprite. So colorful, and has that great “look up” animation

Sweet Mario wallpaper; thanks 4CR.

My favorite Super Mario is from Super Mario Bros. 3. I suppose it’s because I loved that game so much. I mean, back in the day, my parents probably thought I needed a psychiatrist, since I was always playing that game. Ah, the memories…

Yeah, definitely, I really grew up with Super Mario Bros. 3 and to me Super Mario World was just an extension of its gameplay, not the sort of heart-stopping revolutionary game a lot of people consider it to be. Not that it’s bad by any means, of course.
It’s funny how many random spin-off fads were started by Mario, as well, from “put your main character in a kart racer” to “have your main character play a random sport” which have been copied by franchises from Crash Bandicoot to Mega Man.

I still massively prefer the old SMB3 2D art over the current 3D renderings of him.
But I guess that’s mostly because I’m completely sick of seeing those 3D renders on 50,000 different “Mario” games.
(I also detest his voice, with a passion.)

I spy Luigi on the back of the kart!
D~N - 04.04.07 3:22 pm
There’s no lumpy Super Mario RPG Mario either
Kyattsuai - 04.04.07 3:29 pm
It makes me wonder why the Tanooki suit still hasn’t made a return
videogamer3586 - 04.04.07 4:10 pm
Thank you for the wallpaper

Low res is low

Yay for new wallpaper. My old one was getting…
well…
old. Hehe.
Crimson Warrior - 04.04.07 5:50 pm
Maybe the reason I prefer the look of the SMW sprite is because of the colors… The Mario 3 sprite just looked so plump and somehow less colorful than previous Marios. The game was fantastic though
Namssorg - 04.04.07 10:41 pm
Cool wallpaper! There’s IS a bunch of omissions and duplicate Marios though, as a few people have said. Not a definitive evolution, but cool nonetheless.

I don’t know why there’s a link on my name that I didn’t put there.
JohnnyC - 04.05.07 2:18 am
ohhh… sorry. It’s because of my previous post. I’ll stop spamming now :-S Again, awesome desktop
JohnnyC - 04.05.07 2:20 am
I’m glad the “Mario & Luigi” version made it in there (the only one with the black M on the hat) — it’s distinct traditional illustration style is really endearing.
Ocho - 04.05.07 10:19 am
Yeah, now that someone has mentioned it, the quasi-3D isometric Mario from SMRPG is pretty important to the “evolution”.
