Joyfully confusing is the only way to describe my first (and only) experience with Nights on the Sega Saturn. Using the analog stick for the first time was jarring, but having a bright and colorful world to experiment with it in made the experience worth it.
Now courtesy of the ever French Jeux-France we have the first screens of the oft-rumored Nights sequel for Wii. Our Canadian correspondent Coffeeman was able to decipher the cryptic language in the magazine scans and they say something like this.
The series seems to use the same graphic style as the original, lots of colors with lots of special effects. Two player multiplayer will be supported, and there will be online support. There will also be new characters and new movements with the Wiimote. Sega will announce it officially in early April.
Please don’t mess this up Sega. Please.

Pretty cool, a nice exclusive.
However, I continue to wonder how many people out there actually played the original and how many people have been commenting about how “great” this is for other reasons. It seems like in the last few years on the Internet this game has become cool to love and wish for sequels for… But the original wasn’t exactly a blockbuster, it was on a largely ignored system and you could get the game (with controller) very easily for as little as $10 new for many, many months after the Saturn was essentially dead.
I’m not saying it’s a bad game, but I do think it’s ridiculously overrated… partially because I don’t think many people have any genuine experience with it. People seem to forget those AWFUL sections of the game where you had to play as one of the two children.
As long as those are out, I’ll be a lot more happy about this sequel lol.

Well, having never played Nights, I’m excited to see what all the hype is about. Hopefully this one lives up to all of it.
One thing though, I expected much more of a “HOLY CRAP!!!! NEW NIGHTS!!!!! FOR THE WII!!!!!” kinda spaze with this news
Lil_fighter - 03.30.07 2:17 pm
“the ever French Jeux-France” has to be one of the most inane phrases ever
This game looks pretty cool. I’ve never played the original, though, so I’m not going to be getting my knickers in a twist about it. Still, I’m interested to see what all the fuss is about.

“courtesy of the ever French Jeux-France” had me loling. N1 Benny!

Loved the parts of the Saturn game that I played, can’t wait to get this. Second only to Opoona on my list of wanted Wii games
JodyAnthony - 03.30.07 2:37 pm
I played this on the Saturn long ago and still do on occasion. It remains a classic and a gem of infinite fun. For those who never played it you missed out on something great. It wasn’t a perfect game, but yet it was a game I could play over and over again and never get bored. That more then anything lets me know why so many others praise it with high regard. This can only be a good thing!

“People seem to forget those AWFUL sections of the game where you had to play as one of the two children.”
Those were not SECTIONS in the game. You only had to play for like 10 seconds as one of the kids if you wasted all your time on a level. I hope they leave them in but with more responsive controls.
Nights WAS and still IS a great game. Its not overrated by any stretch of the imagination. The controls were spot on, the graphics were beautiful. Next to Burning Rangers this remains the greatest game Sonic Team ever developed. I still have my modded Saturn hooked up and seeing someone play Nights for the first time is just plain fun. I have yet to meet a single soul who disliked the game, not to mention its beautiful style.

As if I didn’t already need a reason to spend more money on games
Lunar Takiro - 03.30.07 3:08 pm
I really hope there’s a new Soft Museum or something similar.
pete - 03.30.07 3:11 pm
Darn, was hoping for a Nights on VC news. Maybe they could put the original in game as an unlockable or something.
Miquel Fire - 03.30.07 3:36 pm
NiGHTS him/herself looks friggen’ ugly. I know I’LL be skipping all of the cutscenes.
Pheonix Gamma - 03.30.07 3:40 pm
My thoughts are reflected in Benny’s last words, “Don’t screw this up”. That was my second reaction. My first was, “OMG NiGHTS!” but my smile quickly dropped as I realized it was the SEGA of 2007 developing the game, not the SEGA of yesteryear, who could seemingly do no wrong.
Something as hotly rumored about, whispered about, and craved as much as a NiGHTS sequel cannot be screwed up. It cannot fail, because if it does, I will have lost all faith in SEGA. Sad but true.
Mister Disco - 03.30.07 5:11 pm
I dunno… i still think im more excited about Alien Syndrome, as far a sega sequals go. but ill probebly ge this too. i hear nothing but good things about nights.
untill i met tony.
Gotcha Force - 03.30.07 5:29 pm
HA! NO ONE WOULD BELEIVE ME IN THE IRC!!! WELL LOOKY HERE!!
lemcott - 03.30.07 5:56 pm
Still own NiGHTS and the Christmas version … both are still a blast to play today as no game has yet improved upon the forumula.
I will join the “cautiosly optimistic” group as I fully expect sega to somehow mess up this title.
+peter - 03.30.07 6:06 pm
why do they have to make the main character look like a total flamer carnie. they should just give him a pair of pistols and krazy shoes that let him grind everywhere. you know….real edgy like.
/sarcasm.
spire - 03.30.07 6:07 pm
stop complaining on how “gay” an ANDROGYNOUS character looks. its illogical.
lemcott - 03.30.07 6:27 pm
Judging Sega’s waggle thus far, I’m going to put my reputation on this game being a hit. But still with poor controls.
Spence - 03.30.07 6:33 pm
The only chance I’ve had to play NiGHTS was on the little-remembered GBA download game in a couple of Sega releases (Billy Hatcher, in my case).
Even there, devoid of all 3D graphics and bright worlds, it was awesome. Count me Highly Interested.
John H. - 03.30.07 7:20 pm
I think theres a much better chance at Nights being done right than poor Sonic. Remember Nights was already a 3D game, they dont have to try and work out how it will work in 3D.
Traveller - 03.30.07 7:34 pm
Has anyone noticed that a lot of anticipated-for-years-but-probably-never-happen games have been announced. First, Mario and Sonic, now Nights? I’m personally holding out for Gitaroo Man Wii.
yanipheonu - 03.30.07 7:45 pm
All I have to say is about freaking time.
Shadow Zero - 03.30.07 7:46 pm
I bought the original for my Saturn when it came out. Great game (I also remember scouring my city for the magazine that included Xmas NiGHTS).
The original did have a 2 player mode you could unlock and events that happened (try setting the system clock to April 1st).
Oh and I hear some people on other websites complaining that Yuji Naka is not involved. Trust me that is a good thing.
The first Sonic game without him was the Wii version. He was also excited about what he did with Shadow in his own game.
With him gone it could be good.
Robotron - 03.30.07 7:46 pm
+PETER: If you fully expect Sega to mess it up, that’s not cautiously optimistic. Learn what that phrase means.
Bighouse - 03.30.07 7:48 pm
…So much joy…
Oof - 03.30.07 8:44 pm
yay!
jeremy - 03.30.07 8:47 pm
I’ll reserve any excitement till May. The blogosphere and gaming magazine world are so skewed by April fools BS from the end of March through the beginning of May. People don’t get that it only runs till noon, and the web will blow stuff out of proportion all month.
I missed the first Nights because, well, it was on the Saturn, and I had N64 and PlayStation… I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE a remake or a sequel. But I’m not getting my hopes up. Not unless SEGA talks about this game in May.
Then I wonder, “What about a REZ 2?”
SonicRift - 03.30.07 9:29 pm
This is about the biggest game announcement yet for any platform from my perspective. I absolutely loved the original Nights into Dreams game on Saturn, although not many shared this sentiment at the time. (People were too busy with Mario64 and the new competitor, Sony) Nights was originally conceived to be Sega’s true next-gen “flagship” title and I think it delivered on so many levels. I am glad Sega is finally listening to their long frustrated fanbase and making this game happen.
realstar - 03.30.07 9:52 pm
I’m not liking the quality of the model here. It looks almost Dreamcast/N64 level.
Questworld - 03.30.07 10:13 pm
nice to see sega supporting the wii so much. considering how good secret rings was maybe sega can reclaim their former glory on wii. i’d love a panzer dragoon, sambe de amigo or a non online phantasy star. but now i just had a banana blitz flashback and regret getting so excited
Greg in PA - 03.30.07 10:35 pm
lookin pretty sweet to me
N Rumas - 03.30.07 10:44 pm
It’s funny how Panzer Dragoon Saga was made like a Wii game before the controller existed. (pointing directly at things with an on-screen cursor to examine or enter locations, flying your dragon, realtime combat with direction changes etc.)
realstar - 03.30.07 10:46 pm
the only experience i’ve ever had with NiGHTS was a five minute demo in a Sears store years ago.
I’ve missed you, NiGHTS. Please come home.
Houston - 03.31.07 1:35 am
Watch out for the hands. Those edges are sharp!
Pheonix Gamma - 03.31.07 1:48 am
Actually the “cryptic” language in the magazine scan is Portuguese. When is SEGA going to ressurrect Streets of Rage? that is one game that seriously needs an update
Dark_Apprentice - 04.02.07 9:05 am
So, should I be excited or not about this game?
I nevered played the original.
Will it riocks my world?

oh don piano. i love the original.
Atomsk - 04.03.07 1:00 pm
I that image in the current issue of Nintendo Power. Is it just me, or does that character resemble Sonic just a little too much? I thought that the “I’m designed so kids will think I’m cool, and therefore by association, so is my product” characters, died with 7Up’s ‘Fido Dido’.
And yes, before someone calls me on it, I know Fido Dido is still being used in some countries. It’s sad.
JohnnyC - 04.05.07 2:34 am
I *saw* that image… sorry. Boo for typos.
