After loads of speculation and a couple of seconds of video, we finally have some solid information on Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles via IGN. The upcoming Wii sidestory will be directed by Masachika Kawata, who was responsible for the PS2 port of Resident Evil 4. Capcom also confirmed that the title will run at 480p and include a widescreen mode.
The more exciting news is that the title is no longer just a recap of the first few games. Umbrella Chronicles will be split into two separate stories. The first is a new game, taking place between Code Veronica X and Resident Evil 4. The second story is the previously confirmed collection of scenes from the earlier Resident Evil games redone in the Resident Evil 4 engine.

Does anyone know if there will -still- be the prologue to RE5 in it?

It’s great that they are adding a completley new part to this. Having just the old stuf redone sounded pretty cool, but this makes it worth $50.

Should be interesting. I am hoping that the Wiimote works well with the game, it may be a bit confusing at first since there have been so many resident evil games and we are so conditioned to the controls. The aiming and invetory should be very good, I am just wondering how they handle item interaction which imo would be the hardest to adapt to depending on how they scheme it.

Watarai, it’s still shady thanks to speculation over at GAF.
My theory is that it will cover the best bits of the Umbrella storyline, with the RE4 engine using waggle. It will fill in the gaps and act as a prequel for the 5th game on true next gen consoles.
PS. 16:9 is known to be stretched.

who uses Dolby Pro-Logic II anyway?
IGN - 03.29.07 10:19 am
“PS. 16:9 is known to be stretched.”
The aspect ratio of an image is its displayed width divided by its height, for instance, the aspect ratio of a traditional television screen is 4:3, or 1.33:1. and European digital television use an aspect of 16:9, or about 1.78:1
there is no “stretching” involved

Sounds great, though I could care less about the aspect ratios. Gah. Especially about a Wii game, I thought the Wii was supposed to ignore that stuff entirely.
Baramos - 03.29.07 10:41 am
The aspect ratio is just “widescreen or not”.
4:3 is standard, while 16:9 is widescreen. I, for one, like to see that most Wii games support progressive scan and widescreen, since I bought a widescreen, 480p-supporting TV specifically to play my games on. :p

Pro-Logic II is great for encoding 4.1 to 7.1 surround sound down to stereo so that those w/o an expensive sound system will hear is in stereo without knowing the difference, whereas those who have a home theater system can enjoy the added channels. Most home theater systems include PLII decoding, so it can be the way to go. What’s nice about PLII is that it can also upmix stereo sources to 5.1 by using its matrix decoder. Music in a stereo form can sound richer by pressing the PLII button on the home theater system because it pulls out the low frequencies for the sub woofer, the balanced sounds for the center speaker, and the unbalanced echos for the rear speakers. As for games, I’ve been playing PLII since the days of Perfect Dark. Surprisingly, even Wii Sports makes extensive use of it.

This is great news, More RE4? Wii controls???? Yes please…
WHAT??? - 03.29.07 7:45 pm
I’d like it if they threw in those PS2-exclusive levels from RE4.
MR_DNA - 03.29.07 9:27 pm
^ Yeah, they definitely should.
Questworld - 03.30.07 4:48 am
Well you’ve answered your own question then S256, it is 4:3.
It might be presented in widescreen aspect ratio, but the game’s resolution isn’t any higher. So it is not true widescreen.
