In his latest blog entry, IGN’s Peer Scheider takes a look at some pesky Wii problems that have proven troublesome for early adopters, coming up with some interesting theories along the way. While any issues the system has are certainly not of 360 ‘three rings of death’ proportions, it’s pretty obvious that Wii does have a few annoying quirks, standby mode overheating chief among them. Click below to hear Schneider’s highly probable explanation for that one and more.

They really need to take a look at the WiiConnect24 overheating issue.
It’s far from out of control.. but heat energy is the fastest and most common case for energy loss.
The Wii was billed as an environmentally friendly console, using less energy when in use (disc not spinning) than the 360 and PS3 in standby.
I’ve turned of Wii Connect 24, not just because I fear for my hardware- solely because it is going to cost me money if that thing is warm 24/7.
I know the WiFi chips are on- but PDAs or Nintendo DS systems don’t get that hot when in wireless mode.

funny no one else is screaming about this p.o.s not working on most HD lcd tvs. i had to send mine back and it still looks like crap.

Who the hell cares about all that? It’s like a PS3 on crack when you’re waiting for it to load. Sheesh Nintendo, at times like these I wish you could’ve sticked to cartridges over DVDs. =/

What the heck does that even mean? Its fast at loading?? A little elaboration isn’t too much to ask for I hope.

Some problems I have had so far with my Wii from launch:
-Getting stuck in the Connecting to Shop Channel
-Random disc read error once in a full blue moon
-While playing Elebits, sometimes when it switched to the cut scenes it would all of a sudden slow down and can barely play (more likely the software)
-WiiConnect24 seems to generate too much heat for my liking (I leave it disabled just incase)
Annoyances:
-Must have standby mode enabled in order to access news and weather (Why can’t I just download the new information when I open the channel like it does)

Language please, you can do it on Joystiq but not here.

Hmm, it is pretty hot in WiiConnect24, but that’s the price you pay when the fan’s not on. I mean, you don’t wanna hear it running, do ya?
And I know that after months and months of keeping WiiConnect24 on 24/7, my energy bill is not up at all. I bet I’m paying something like 50 cents a month for that feature, and that’s at inflated NYC energy prices.

I get the black whole issue once a day-Maybe a software probalem?
The disk drive makes a grinding noise when I reset the system with a disk in it every once and a while.
It won’t connect to the internet with WiFi all the time I have to do it two or three times to get it to work.
I am going to send it back for repairs/replace but I’ll wait till Nintendo is on hardware version 1.3 or more. I have 15 months. I have started unplugging it when not in use to stop the black whole problem.

i’ve had wifi connection problems, but my internet isnt exactly the greatest so im reserving my judgement there. i dont really play my wii enough to notice problems TBH, other than a quick 10 minutes on wiisports now and then.

Wow.. the quality of comments here at 4CR has really taken a turn for the worse. Maybe because this is a “complaining” post- but come on. How about if you’re going to complain about something, try and post a possible solution to someone else’s problem too.
I haven’t had any overheating problems- my Wii is in a nice ventilated area, but I have had the browser lock up on occasion (Like when loading g-mail)
Namssorg - 03.19.07 10:31 am
I still can’t find a Wii.

If people really knew how to fix these issues I doubt they’d be complaining about them in the first place. The same is kind of true of the 360’s random issues. You can have it in a super well ventilated area and something can still happen. Personally, I’ve been very lucky I guess lol.

My Wii will freeze sometimes when its on the internet. I have to cut the power to it for it to stop.

I totally agree.
For the record, I didn’t mean this as a ‘complaining’ post, but rather as a post to boost awareness about some things that we as a Wii-centric community should be in the know about.
It’s obvious that there really *are* some problems with early Wii hardware, and it’s nice to see that Nintendo’s so generous with replacements.
My case:
- Gets hot in standby mode, so I don’t use it. Ever. (I also wouldn’t waste the electricity even if it didn’t get hot.)
- Wiimote speakers snap/crackle/pop from time to time, coinciding with a shaky pointer. Then it suddenly gets better. Weird. I’m wondering if there’s some kind of interference in my building. Thought it was just a bad Wiimote, but it happens to all of mine, and at the exact same time. The ‘motes are fine.
- ‘Freezes’ once in a blue moon on the internet or on some other screen. For a while, I thought it was freezing all the time when loading games/going from one screen to another in the menu, but then I just tried waiting it out, and sure enough, it eventually got to the next screen, no prob. Happens quite a bit. Sometimes it takes forever to load NES VC games, and sometimes it’s over in a millisecond. The mind boggles.

Sorry to hear about all your problems. My Wii has been great since launch day. As for Stand-by mode it gets a little warm, but only slightly. No where near as warm as my 360 (which is my fourth 360….so glad I dropped a grand on launch day so I could upgrade to a crusty refurb unit….thanks MS).
Robotron - 03.19.07 11:20 am
I’ve never had a problem with my Wii, other than it’s lack of attention…whatever that means…
hip hop anonymous - 03.19.07 11:20 am
My system doesn’t get too hot in standby. No disc read errors yet. It did lock up once while playing Contra (which kinda baffled me), but the only other thing is the Shop Channel…slow to connect and man it’s fugly.
DCSimian - 03.19.07 11:25 am
I count myself lucky.
-I don’t have an overheating machine (standby mode it’s room temperature or perhaps a little warm…but never hot).
-Never seen any glitches, though I don’t spend much time on pause.
-Never had a black hole.
It does freeze up once in awhile when I’m playing NFS:Carbon…usually during a pre-race cut-scene. I figure that’s a scratch on my disk or something though.
Drew Kora - 03.19.07 12:21 pm
Why you guys say “hot”, how hot do you mean? Obviously it’s normal for most electronics to get warm, but I’m kind of just wondering what it’d be compared to.
Tony - 03.19.07 12:54 pm
My Wii gets the same messages from Nintendo over and over. I seem to receive the “Nintendo Wrist Strap” message every day, and the message announcing the Everybody Votes Channel just about as often. So my blue light is always on (and flashing) when I’m not playing. I won’t know when there are actual updates.
Is the blue light supposed to be on while the Wii is on? ‘Cause mine sure stays off…
Simon - 03.19.07 1:20 pm
Got mine on launch day from Nintendo World. Guess I’m a lucky one, I haven’t really had any problems. Never overheated and never blacked out. Yesterday I thought it was blacking out while loading the Everybody Votes Channel but the second I got off the couch to press reset it popped up.
Only thing that happens now and then is I can’t connect to the Internet but that’s issues with my router. A quick router reset fixes that.
Zell - 03.19.07 1:42 pm
Your Wii remote’s speaker could be crackling and popping like that from mobile phone interference. Happens to me sometimes if I have my phone next to me while playing.
Zell - 03.19.07 1:50 pm
Its a fab system, but the only problem I have ever had with my wii is a strange one. I can play all my gamecube games on it bar one - Legend of Zelda: Collector’s edition disk.
Its a rather annoying problem, that restarts my console everytime I attempt to boot up the disk. The game itself works on all my other friends wii’s and my own gamecube, but resets my wii, every time. I’m baffled.
Michelle - 03.19.07 2:11 pm
yeah, I think im among the people with the lesser plagued consoles.
I have personally had no experience with high temperature of any sort. As others have stated, it does get a little warm, but thats to be expected I reckon. And My wii is also near a window, so the occasional draft may be keeping it cool lol.
The internet browser does occasionally lock up, but I simply hold the power button down until the console turns off. Its likely that it only freezes up because its just a beta version of the final browser.
fizban - 03.19.07 3:36 pm
I’ve not really had any problems except for Wii Shop not working with my dial up (never had a problem borrowing friend’s WiFi though, the wonders of broadband), and occasionally Opera freezing…but Opera is more or less beta software as far as I’m concerned. I’ll wait for the full version before judging that.
9th Sage - 03.19.07 10:03 pm
My Wii has locked up on me when going from the various channels back to home several times. To the point where I had to get up and actually unplug it and plug it back in. It also has trouble reading discs sometimes. I guess I should probably call nintendo about it.
Oddly enough, I have a launch day 360 that works like a dream still!
Mike D - 03.21.07 1:56 am
when my wiimotes run out of battery and i replace them, they start playing up. then when i try to re sync them they wont. i have to wait for ages until i can do it again.
