The Wii has only been out for a little over 4 and a half months in Japan and it has already reached a milestone that its predecessor the GameCube could not. There are now 2 Japanese million-sellers for the system. They are Wii Sports (which is not included with the Japanese system) and Hajimete no Wii (Wii play).
During the entire run of the GameCube there was only one game to sell over a million copies in Japan. That game was Super Smash Brothers Melee, and it took a lot longer to get to the 1 million mark. Is this an indication that the Wii is going to be a massive software seller or is it just a fluke? No other Wii titles are selling nearly as well. The 3rd place Wii title, Zelda: Twilight Princess, has yet to crack the half million point. Regardless, it is an achievement. Both million-sellers are currently in the top 10 and show no signs of leaving any time soon.

Uh didn’t Wind Waker sell a million in a month because of preorders?
Nawid - 03.14.07 11:38 pm
I think you meant, “There are NOW two million-sellers.”
MR_DNA - 03.14.07 11:43 pm
Honestly, what this tells me is that I’m really concerned for the PS3, and of course the Xbox 360, although Microsoft’s consoles haven’t really done that well overseas. But yeah, if you look at the success of the DS, and then you see Wii’s two first million-seller titles, you can see that the Japanese market is moving towards the more simple and fun games. You have to give props to Nintendo, the accurately dipicted the changes in the Japanese market, and followed accordingly. I honestly would be very worried to see what that market would look like without the DS and Wii.
Matthew - 03.15.07 12:10 am
@NAWID
Wind Waker hit 2.47 million in the U.S. But it never broke a million in Japan. I got close (0.86mil) and was one of the cube’s biggest sellers.
Vinnk - 03.15.07 12:33 am
A Pokemon for the Wii, with DS connectivity and online play, would sell over a million in under a week, I’d bet.
Josh - 03.15.07 12:35 am
@ Josh
You’re joking right?
VagranceHasNoName - 03.15.07 1:09 am
A million for Wii Sports without being a pack-in? I hope that doesn’t encourage Nintendo to make more crappy ‘Wii _____’ titles.
Falco - 03.15.07 1:50 am
“A million for Wii Sports without being a pack-in? I hope that doesn’t encourage Nintendo to make more crappy ‘Wii _____’ titles.”
IMO, they’re about all the system has going for it at this point. Aside from Mario Galaxy, I’m looking most forwar to future “Wii ____” titles.
duderdude2 - 03.15.07 2:20 am
Yeah that’s right didn’t the Cube do much better (comparatively) in the US than JPN?
Boots - 03.15.07 2:30 am
@Boots
Maybe about the same percentage wise? The Xbox was a non-factor in Japan so it took some of those sales I suppose. But everywhere PS2 was far and away the leader.
This generation is going to be interesting…
Vinnk - 03.15.07 2:43 am
I’m surprised Zelda has yet to crach the .5 million mark, but i’m wondering how many it’s sold if you include the gc version also. Anywho the only games i’m really looking forward to at the moment are Mario Galaxy and SSBB. Hopefully we’ll get some goog RPG’s, here’s looking at you VC!
Bainick - 03.15.07 6:05 am
What this really means is that the Wii will be the queen of mini-games. As long as Nintendo can keep churning out low-filling and quirky titles, they’ll sell like hot cakes.
Ho'skanawuhchanee - 03.15.07 7:18 am
@ N Rumas
A brain training game will come out before then, so I think it will be the third.
As for this article describing how Zelda is tracking far less, I’d point out that while it’s unlikely Zelda and Warioware will hit the million mark, both have remained extremely competitive in the japanese market until now, surviving far longer in the top 50 charts than usual for any platform barring the DS. Nintendo’s software business is not just selling fast, but selling sustainably too, which is practically unheard of in the industry.
elmer - 03.15.07 7:21 am
I think you’d best qualify those statements. The gamecube had plenty of million sellers…how many were millions sellers in Japan is a separate matter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_computer_a nd_video_games#Nintendo_GameCube
And several of those games, if they didn’t sell a million in Japan, came darned close. Super Mario Sunshine sold 500,000 copies in its first week, for example, and Mario Party 4 sold 900,000 copies in japan.
WizarDru - 03.15.07 7:37 am
Does anyone else remember all that talking that Iwata has done about sustained sales of games over a long period. He brought it up in like every speech he did last year. This is what they were going for and so far are succeeding.
pete - 03.15.07 8:02 am
One of the reasons for Zelda not selling more here and in Japan is probably because it is also avalable on the GCN. If it were Wii exclusive it would probably sell a lot more on the Wii.
Paradox244 - 03.15.07 8:16 am
@ Josh
Its funny that Pokemon Battle Revolution has everything you said, and was released quite a while ago in Japan. I don’t think it sold that well though….
Lil_Fighter - 03.15.07 9:46 am
You know, what’s more interesting is that the Wii has more titles than the GameCube games, if you count the Virtual Console. It will be interesting to see the VC numbers from around the world.
Arson - 03.15.07 10:11 am
It doesn’t hurt that Wii Play comes with a Wiimote either
Bill - 03.15.07 10:12 am
This is literally insane. Never have I seen such a huge change like this in the industry. Nintendo went from selling only one million seller in japan in a 5 year span to getting 2 of them in under 6 months. Holy moly frijolies. Stellar job is all I can say. And it’s surprising to see one was Wii Sports. The only reason why people even got into the Wii in America was because of Wii Sports. And Japan didn’t even bundle it! They had to actually go out and purchase it. Wii Play seems to be doing good here too, though, as it’s currently beating God of War II on Amazon.
cronotrigger913 - 03.15.07 1:18 pm
Wii Sports is doing incredibly well. I went to square one in my area, and they had a Wii Kiosk that people can play. One of the games was Wii Sports. My little bro was playing and there had to be at least 50-100 people watching him play. It was insane!! The Wii kiosk was being displayed by a Nintendo representative at the food court within my local Square One. After my little brother played it, he just cannot stop talking about it. I have a Wii remote and Twilight Princess, but no Wii. I checked my local Toys R’ Us, the employee told me that people still line-up when they get shipments of the Wii. It’s insane.
Matthew - 03.15.07 3:38 pm
Awesome but…three of Sony’s properties are all ahead of those titles.
And those are even titles that supposedly are aimed at “non-gamers”, which from what I’ve heard, is a large, untapped market in Japan.
Unless of course I’ve been fed bs propaganda.
Hylian Essence - 03.15.07 4:46 pm
Hasn’t Zelda sold at nearly a 1:1 ratio in the US? Meaning well over a million?
(I know this is Japan, I was just wondering.)
Hurricanemario - 03.15.07 4:57 pm

do it. most amazing thing evah.
Jip - 03.15.07 5:01 pm
Interesting… Combined, TP is probably much higher.

JIP… you suck
Cole - 03.15.07 6:07 pm
^^Lmfao @ your name.
Hylian Essence - 03.15.07 6:16 pm
CG Twilight Princess was on-line order only in Japan. I am sure it sold ok (a friend of mine has it), but many less-hardcore gamers never knew there even was a Gamecube version.
Vinnk - 03.15.07 6:37 pm
Proof that the japanese audience truly wants something more accesible and fun to enjoy in short burst than lengthy quests or more “hardcore” games.
Seems Nintendo knew their market very well, let’s see what other crazy stuff they come up with. My bet is if “Wii Fitness” (whatever it is) ends up comming out soon it’ll be the next one to reach 1 million.
Liraco - 03.16.07 12:01 am
How are sales on Excite Truck? I had a blast with it~
jd - 03.16.07 2:12 am
Japanese sales of Excite truck are not great. Not awful, but not great. Which is a shame, I love that game so much.
Vinnk - 03.16.07 2:50 am
It doesn’t hurt that Wiimote comes with a Wii Play either
haha - 03.16.07 4:24 am
I’d suggest that the reason for this is that wii-sports is the only game so far to use the wiimote properly.
zelda was a gc game with a button replaced by “wiggle the remote” as were most of the other launch titles (other than being sub standard games in general (ubisoft i’m looking at you)
I’d see wario-ware doing even better if it had more depth.
We’re still waiting for the innovative title that shows once and for all the POWER of the wiimote. (perhaps the star wars tie in thats bound to happen and will end all the console wars heh
Alex - 03.16.07 12:42 pm
Is there any possibility of Nintendo releasing a more complex Wiimote attachment?
^As I agree with the above poster.
All Wii games thus far have either been a gimmick, a mini game contemplation, or generally rushed, buggy, and poorly designed to begin with.
hyda_albion - 03.16.07 1:01 pm
It’s really teriffic to see that Wii and its software is doing so well in Japan, and for that matter, everywhere in the world. I’m happy for Wii Sports and Wii Play breaking the million mark after only a couple months since their launch.
Animal Crossing, Big Brain Academy, Wii Fitness, and Wii Music are all possible million sellers. I also think that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will go platinum in Japan. After seeing the success that New Super Mario Bros. had and is still having, it looks like Japan will eat up Nintendo’s Wii Mario offerings.

My God Paul, are you ever not kidding Nintendo’s ass? It’s clear all you’re doing is trying to draw support for your crappy side by giving the fans what they want to hear - endless Nintendo praise.
You disgust me.
duderdude2 - 03.17.07 2:52 am
duderdude2, I’m not kidding about anything; the fact of the matter is that Nintendo has been doing very well lately in the United Stats, Japan, and elsewhere in the world. I simply give credit wherever it’s due, and if Nintendo happens to be doing very well, and moreso than its competition, then they deserve more praise.
Also, I’m not trying to draw support for my crappy side, because I don’t have a crappy side. I lift weights regularly, have a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology and know very well how to exercise, and am a mixed martial arts practitioner; I think that all sides of my body are in good condition.
There’s no reason to get upset with me, but it’s all good; hopefully things got cleared up.
Paul Gale - 03.18.07 5:47 pm
Touché regarding capitalizing on my typo. I meant “bad site,” for clarification’s sake.
Anyway, I appreciate the response, it’s just that your comments frequently come across as less then genuine when you plaster “1UP.com” with every post.
duderdude2 - 03.20.07 1:19 am
Ouch, realized I wrote “kidding” instead of “kissing” as well. Guess that’s what I get for posting at 2am.
