Though I was eventually driven away from Mario Kart DS by its online failings (slow matchmaking, player communication limited to phallic decals, and the treachery of “snaking” racers), I still look back on the game with a certain fondness.

Dry Bones and I were a force to be reckoned with, piloting our Egg1. We were like the summer wind, lazily drifting past the struggling competition, taking dusty side-roads that ventured out of the racetracks, gusting through open windows and up the skirts of our opposition’s wives and girlfriends, slipping into unattended baby-rooms to choke the life out of their firstborns, only to return just in time to steal first place.

Nintendo of Europe has put up a video detailing some of their favorite shortcuts in Mario Kart DS. They may not be as elaborate as what I described above, but they’re still entertaining to watch. Even if you already know most of them, the “blue-shell-dodge” at the end is still a treat to watch!

It’s enough to make someone break out the old game again. I’ll give you kids an advance warning right now–power off the DS if you see my name pop up on your matchmaking screen. You might even want to unplug your router and just stay offline for a week or two. To this day, Wario Stadium’s straightaways remain littered with the banana peels of my past races, traces of paint from abandoned dreams crashed against the guardrails…
