It’s true. There’s no use trying to shield yourself from the constant onslaught of Wii info that’s now coming in from every direction. Just relax and enjoy it, I say. After all, this mad info rush is one of the best parts of a console launch
First up, Ngamer reviews Red Steel and Monkey Ball Wii, giving both pretty high scores. It’s obvious now that Red Steel isn’t the disaster many feared it would be, and that’s good to know. I’m curious to see what other critics have to say about the title.
Next, here are some montage videos to entertain you as the Nintendo World media keeps on rolling in. All-new Disaster (!!) footage is featured, which is awesome. Also, don’t miss IGN’s nicely organized roundup of impressions/media from the show. Lines or no lines, I wish I was there!
Moving on, you’re probably well aware that Zelda impressions from the Redmond play session have hit the web in full force. Spoilers abound, so be careful. I warned you!
Finally, CVG is reporting that the GC controller is compatible with VC games, after all. Fantastic news, especially if rumble is supported on N64 games.
That’s it for now, folks. Hope your Wii hunger has been momentarily satisfied.

That would be excellent if GCN controllers could be used for VC games, because the second it gets confirmed (if it does), I’m going out and buying those Hori digital old-school pads from the Nintendo World Store.

love the picture!

GCN controllers CAN be used for VC games, according to the interview posted above, so you’re in luck Lynx. As am I, I won’t have to buy a classic controller after all.

your* Wii Hunger

Wow, Disaster? I thought they forgot about that game.
And this is the first we’ve seen of Forever Blue, right? Looks right purdy, it does.
Azathoth - 11.04.06 1:15 am
@ Grant:
Ah, I thought it was unconfirmed by Nintendo (as the article originally stated, or am I losing my mind? :p). Thanks for the heads up, I just re-read the interview, and I am happy as can be.
Lynx - 11.04.06 1:42 am
Are the VC games really compatible with the GCN controllers? I don’t doubt it, but it’s been drilled in my head for so long that they aren’t that it makes me quite skeptical. If so, that’s really great news!

I never knew that the classic controller didn’t have rumble. I’d buy it if they did that and made it wireless like the remotes.
I would also like to congradulate Sony on making the creepiest ad ever for the PS3. The same genious graphic designer who used the Spider-Man font must have done the date at the end of the Commercial. PS3, available in 1117! Oh, wait…
Atomsk - 11.04.06 2:07 am
Nice, so I’m gonna be able to use my X-Arcade, with GCN cable, on both Metal Slug Anthology AND all the VC games. Awesome, just totally awesome. It’d be more awesome if true arcade games were coming to the VC, then my panel’d be in for some real gaming.

GameCube controllers work for VC games! Yes! That’s great!

Lynx, I hate to crush your HORI Controller dreams, but it might not work out quite how you like.
I have six HORI Nintendo GameCube GameBoy Player Controllers (as they are officially referred to as), and I’ve used them in every way imaginable. As far as using them for the Virtual Console… Even if it would work, which has just been confirmed, it won’t be very useful.
Think of Super Mario World, for the SNES. On the SNES Controller, you hold “Y” to run, and “B” to jump. Take a look at the button formation on the HORI Controller, or even on a standard Nintendo GameCube Controller. “B” is now the small red one, and “Y” the kidney shaped one on top. With just your thumb, it is impossible to hold down Y and press B comfortably, or maybe at all depending on the size of your thumb. This effectively makes the HORI Controller useless for playing most SNES games.
As far as NES games, the Wii Remote in the horizontal position is ideal, and for N64 games, the HORI Controller can’t really be used because there is no stick. (Unless you’re playing Kirby 64, or Mischief Makers.)
So, as for as being able to use GameCube Controllers with Virtual Console games… Don’t get too excited.

I don’t recall if it had rumble or not but, the retro controller is probably one of the sweetest controllers I’ve ever used.
It feels good playing any of the games for the VC (GEN, SNES, NES, N64, TG16) and I think most people will agree when they’ve had the chance to use it.

Maybe you’ll be able to assign the different VC controller buttons to percific GC controller buttons. It would make sense (not that companies always make sense) with there being quite a few different systems on the VC.

That gamecube controller news makes the Hori Digital Pad a MUST BUY.
The thing is insane, I was hoping to find a use for it now that the new Wii VC controller was out but I may just buy another one of those.
Also good to know I can play the VC games on day 1.
Arcanis - 11.04.06 9:31 am
Great. I’ll probably get the VC controller eventually anyway, but not having to get one for VC stuff means I can cut down on my already high level of launch-day spending…or maybe it just means I’ll get a Wii Points card instead.

I’m bummed that you can’t use the VC controller to play Gamecube games…. as long as I have to keep my Wavebird around to play all the Gamecube games I haven’t finished (Wind Waker, BG&E, the last 15-20 shines in SMS that I need for a perfect game, etc.), I might as well use that to play VC games as well.
raindog - 11.04.06 7:10 pm
OMFG the shining is such a fricking scary movie
Wii will wii will rock you! - 11.05.06 2:46 am
Atomsk, don’t you get it? 1117? It means both November 17th and THREE 7! Three as in PS3 and 7 as in… um… huh.
Unsettling commercial, even more unsettling price tag. Nicely done, Sony.
