In the latest batch of ExciteTruck media, we happened to notice something interesting in the sound menu. The usual options are all here, you can set the volume of The Music and sound effect levels. Wait, what’s this third option? SD Card?

It looks like ExciteTruck will allow players to stream music from their SD cards and create their own custom soundtracks. This is a common feature in Xbox and Xbox 360 games, so why not? If this is true, it’s a very pleasant surprise. Very good move on Nintendo’s part.

nah… I don’t believe it…

“This is a common feature in Xbox and Xbox 360 games”
Oddly enough, very few (if any) of my 20+ Xbox games (most of which are the big-name titles) support custom soundtracks. I don’t think I’d much care if they did.
eM - 11.02.06 3:53 pm
On 360, the custom soundtrack thing is basically built into how the system works. So you can listen to music in the menus or in any 360 or Arcade game you please. What’s really nice is that you can also stream music from your computer instead of having to rip it.
In any case, I would hope this would be a feature in some games. It’s especially nice for racers.

> “In any case, I would hope this would be a feature in some games. It’s especially nice for racers.”
Agreed. Thinking about it, I wouldn’t care to tamper with the ambiance of an adventure or shooter or strategy game, but when it comes to racing or other party games that are built around being repetitive, a soundtrack would come in handy. Especially when you’re playing with friends - your own music will really bring out the party atmosphere.
Scypher - 11.02.06 4:13 pm
The problem is that racing games these days tend to have really really sh***** soundtracks (Burnouts 3 and 4, SSX 3, Gran Turismo, etc) so they really need custom soundtrack features. Excite Truck, however, will probably have a fine soundtrack, but it’ll still be really cool if you can play your own music as well.
Apfhex - 11.02.06 4:21 pm
I think if it was an option for selecting your music it would be labled as music soundtrack or something. Not just SD Card.
NoBullet - 11.02.06 4:39 pm
@ nobullet:
I agree, but why else would an “SD Card” option be in the sound menu?
Greg - 11.02.06 4:49 pm
It’s just there to save data I assume.
Diamondblade - 11.02.06 4:56 pm
I’ve been doing this for years… its called turning down the game’s Music volume, and turning up some music.
Alanis Morisette to me means leveling up in Final Fantasy Six.
Carin - 11.02.06 5:21 pm
if it were there to save data it wouldnt be in the sound options, it’d be in the main options
and since the music would have to be on the SD card the most obvious name to give to the accessing of that through a menu would be ‘SD Card’ as to not confuse people, since there is no other way to get media to the system
Textbook - 11.02.06 5:21 pm
Carin, i personally hate hearing music but not hearing the game music coupled with it, even if very low
Textbook - 11.02.06 5:28 pm
It’s already been confirmed that you can stream mp3s from the SD card for the Photo Channel, so this isn’t too big of a stretch.
CDubb - 11.02.06 5:28 pm
I actually liked Burnout 3/4’s soundtrack, thought it was pretty cool. Anyway, this would be an awesome feature, just too bad you have to waste an SD Card and can’t just stream from an ipod (leave it to a fanboy to complain once Nintendo gives a little
)
Super-Jesse-Mario - 11.02.06 5:35 pm
I hope this is true so I can add my taste of music in the game.
I can see it now! Me flying in the air listing to Sufjan Stevens!
Matt Ducky - 11.02.06 5:41 pm
Wouldn’t Sufjan be a little too relaxing for Excite Truck?
PiratedTVPro - 11.02.06 5:56 pm
I’ll take it with a grain of salt.
But I don’t see what else that can be.
Karmakin - 11.02.06 6:07 pm
Dang. Now I HAVE to buy an SD Card for this game. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to spend money on one… But now that your own music can be played on a Wii game like ExciteTruck… (which I personally am more excited about than Raving Rabbids and *dodges tomatoes* Twilight Princess) I’m totally psyched for the Wii. Wii4Evar!!!
Crimson Warrior - 11.02.06 6:24 pm
Is this confirmed to be the sound options screen? The original poster at neogaf just said options screen. If its just the options screen, its probably just for accessing saves/replays or whatever. I can believe that Excite Truck may not have many options, being that its just a simple racer with one control config. So an options screen where all you can change are sound settings and access game saves is somewhat believable.
Final Atomic Buster - 11.02.06 6:25 pm
Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin were an awesome substitute for the licensed tracks for Burnout 3. ExciteTruck is going to be awesome — I just wish I knew more about the game!
Dynamo! - 11.02.06 6:38 pm
PiratedTVPro,
No Sufjan is good for anything!
Matt Ducky - 11.02.06 6:49 pm
We need a better source for this than a neoGAF thread. Where’d the image originally come from?
Josh S - 11.02.06 6:57 pm
A lot of the time neoGAF is one of the best sources anyone is going to get.
Tony - 11.02.06 7:15 pm
sweet, i’ll be ripping up dirt in my truck listening to my fav. tunes…
Larzy - 11.02.06 7:37 pm
that is,… if is true
Larzy - 11.02.06 7:38 pm
It’d certainly be a nice option to have, though not necessarily something I’d use unless the soundtrack sucked.
I like soundtracks like the f-zero one though. That one’s sweet.
Liraco - 11.02.06 7:59 pm
Anything by Sufjan is a WAY better choice than, say, “All I Want” by the Offspring played over and over on a loop.
raindog - 11.02.06 8:21 pm
RAINDOG: All I Want, although, is perfect for Crazy Taxi
NEEKS - 11.02.06 8:26 pm
“In any case, I would hope this would be a feature in some games. It’s especially nice for racers.”
I agree 100%, but I wish NFS Carbon did the same for it’s outing on the Wii.
Marc - 11.02.06 8:32 pm
“The problem is that racing games these days tend to have really really sh***** soundtracks”
Also don’t forget how NFS Carbon did that too, with all it’s crappy rock and metal. NFS Most Wanted had the best soundtrack out of any Need For Speed game.
Marc - 11.02.06 8:33 pm
“accessing of that through a menu would be ‘SD Card’ as to not confuse people, since there is no other way to get media to the system”
Not true. Nintendo put USB ports on the system. So I don’t see why you cant transfer or save data from that.
nobody - 11.02.06 8:36 pm
By “that” I meant USB Flash Drive
nobody - 11.02.06 8:38 pm
raindog, I agree and it’s good to see a gamer with good music taste.
Matt Ducky - 11.02.06 9:02 pm
This MP3 playability is awesome… i would like to see that on other games as well.
godoro - 11.02.06 9:24 pm
Excite Truck was already looking to be a pretty solid launch title, but now knowing that its music is essentially made up of our own choices rocks. Now give me a level editor and I’m totall set. Wii: Playing = Believing.

I hope this is true. A-Team theme FTW.
Questworld - 11.02.06 11:35 pm
Custom soundtracks didn’t get used nearly enough in the xbox. As far as I’m concerned if it’s possible it should be an option in every game, expecially racing ones.
pete - 11.03.06 12:39 am
I don’t know. It’s nice to have the option to play my own music….but I don’t want game developers to slack in the music department. I mean, video game msuic can be so awesome. I don’t want to see studios sell it short.
Seriously, Mega Man wouldn’t have been half the experience on my childhood that it was without the incredible soundtracks…or the AWESOME score that played after you beat the game and litened to the music as the credits rolled.
I don’t want to see that element of audi go away. You wouldn’t want to dub out the soudntrack for your own music to your favorite movie, so why would you want to for your favorite game? If developers put the time and money into soundtracks that their games deserve, the soundtrack can only add to the immersiveness of the game.
gravitymachine - 11.03.06 1:07 am
I wonder if they support the ipod, xb360 style. now that would rock. getting songs on the old XB is a pointless hastle, especially if your music is mainly in mp3.
PeZ - 11.03.06 6:23 am
gravitymachine : I completely agree with you. Especially on the mega man part. Boomer Kuwanger’s stage just wouldn’t be the same.
Then again, I wouldn’t mind if they had a good soundtrack, but still gave you this option. For example, I wouldn’t mind doing something, such as, leveling up, and listening to a podcast.
Also, I don’t even want to see the option in a game like Zelda. If anyone in the world EVER wanted to listen to their own music instead of hearing Zelda’s score, I would personally find them out, hunt them down, and eat their Wii. Both of them!
NEEKS - 11.03.06 8:30 am
It’s an optional thing though. So what’s the difference? I have the option in games like Oblivion, but I never use it. Giving people an option to customize something the way they like is never a bad thing.
