I have really been enjoying this video series. Part 3 of the Zelda Retrospective (being put together by gametrailers.com) is now on-line. This installment explores the embarrassment of the CD-i games and the glory of Ocarina of Time and (arguably) Majora’s Mask.
I actually have one of the CD-i Zelda games and as a CD-i game it’s not half bad. As a Zelda game however, it is horrible. They are proof of why Nintendo hasn’t given Link a voice as far as I am concerned.
So what is the best 3D Zelda? Fan favorite Ocarina of Time or cult classic Majora’s Mask? Or maybe it is the next generation of “Celda” that captured you heart container. Whatever your preference, do you believe Nintendo when they say that Twilight Princess will beat them all?

I agree Vinnk, Link does not need a voice.
Fav. Zelda is LTTP… After that, everything is held equally in opinion; TOOT, Zelda1, Link’s Awakening, MM, and WW. Never played the 2 GBC twin-Zelda games, nor Zelda2… Going to soon though.
And I am uber excited for TP!

the best ZELDA is OoT by FAR

Ocarina of Time = Majora’s Mask > *
That should cover it.

I believe all those various Links should have a voice.
I just don’t believe the Links should talk.
Diffrent sounds, yelps, and yells depening on the action. Perhaps even a “hmmm” or a “ha” from time to time would work.
Like Garfield from the comics however, Link not talking adds to the experince and lets us respond with our own thoughts instead.
Wind Waker was an amazing game, unfortuantly some never notice the highlights of it due to the surface attributes they don’t like.
As an artist, Wind Waker is my favourite.
As a gamer, Ocarina of Time was my favourite.
As someone who replays games however, it’s Wind Waker I don’t mind going back to more often, with OoT when there is a drought or a need to play something.
Never got a chance to play Majora’s Mask however, but I’ll get that on the Virtual Console.

i was wondering if they were gonna mention the CD-I games, good to know theyre covering everything
TakaM - 10.30.06 10:57 am
Honestly, I think I had more fun with Wind Waker than with the N64 games…something about sailing the high seas, pirate style…eyar! Just for kicks, I’d raid the random platforms out at sea, all pirate and ninja like…trying to finish the dudes off as fast as possible…good times
I think OoT was the best overall, as far as story, gameplay, art, etc, but i think I’d rather go back to play Majora’s Mask over OoT…dunno why yet…*begins to ponder

Majoras Mask>Ocarina of Time
I just enjoyed the overall feel of Majora alot more. The dark mood the subtle little details, the people doing what they did, everything it was near perfect. If only it had 1 more dungeon and the final boss was harder, it would of been the perfect game.

That video really did Majora justice. So many gamers ragged on it in the day, and thankfully most of them now have come to respect it. But that retrospective nailed just why it’s a great and unique experience.

So I’m guessing that they’re going to cover TMC and TWW on part 5?

There was a really, really good Zelda Retrospective article in EDGE this month.

Heh, I wish my eBay CD-i worked….I have a couple of the three CD-i Zeldas and wish to play them so I can laugh at them (and get some nice video captures of the FMV for everyone else to laugh at).

One of my friends had the CD-i and the Zelda game. Back then i thought it was awesome…

In regards to OoT, the guy said, “[…]the graphics might not have been on a PlayStation performance level[…]” This was about the halfway mark of the video.
What the hell? I thought the only thing the PS had up on N64 was audio and disc space. Someone clue me in, because didn’t the N64 have better graphics than PS? The specs should back me up on this one, I believe.
Lynx - 10.30.06 3:42 pm
The PS could push more Polygons in theory, and more textures, but N64 could do texture filtering making the games look sharper.
Just look at screens from Mario 64 DS, you can se the lack of filtering. the game pushes more polys and textures compared to the N64, but the lack of filtering make it look worse just like the PS

I definitely prefer Majora’s Mask to Ocarina. Majora’s Mask has that awesome surreal quality to it. The villain is much deeper and more complex than the generic “take over the earth for no reason” Ganondorf of OoT. And like the video said, Termina is so much more intimate than Hyrule. As you delve into min-quests you grow to love the characters, and it makes you happy to see their desires and need fulfilled, and and furthermore it gives you motivation. You WANT to save these people. The ending cutscene of the Anju & Kafei miniquest is one of the greatest moments in gaming, in my opinion.

Link can speak, but only if it’s Hiyama Nobuyuki that does the speaking for him! (The voice actor who does teen-Link’s battle grunts). Otherwise, we might be stuck with “Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, Princess” in the most nasal tones.
Wind Waker will always have my heart container in 3D. Though, from what I got to play of Twilight Princess two years ago, I sure like it more than Ocarina.

Arguably?!
Majoras Mask may be my favorite Zelda ever, and I love the heck out of Oot and LttP, not to mention WW. Something about it just felt so perfect and otherworldy, with the familiarity of OoT. It would’ve been daunting as heck had we not played OoT, but after that adventure, I think we were ready for it, and it delivered in all the ways I hoped it would. Tough to replay because of the N64 graphics these days (what isn’t?), but the characters and story and world will always be there.
