Powet.tv has posted a video of a local news station doing a report about the 1990 CES show. Pay special attention to the way the narrator says “Mario”. Wow, back in 1990 it looked like Nintendo could not be beaten. Every new product in this video fell to the power of Nintendo (though the Genesis was a very strong rival). Can Nintendo regain this golden child image that it once had? Time will tell I suppose. For now sit back and enjoy some sweet Howard Philips Bow-Tie action.
Local News Report on CES from 1990
Update: Powet.tv went down for a bit. Maybe too much traffic from us, maybe monkeys, in either event, you can view the video at this link as well.

its funny how he said that atari thing was twice as expensive as the gameboy. Sony should have watched this video and took some notes before making the psp!

Ahaha, giant Lynx, not portable at all.

I know Howard left for Lucasarts… there was even a farewell column in NP. What happened to him after that?

He worked for THQ for a while and now he works for Microsoft Game Studios as a producer.

According to Wikipedia, his name is spelled “Philips,” with but one ‘L’. Looks like that news report got it wrong as well.

My, the advent of the compact disc sure brought about a suitability issue. It wasn’t until after people started using live actors and video in games that it became apparent that it just DIDN’T LOOK RIGHT. At least some gems came from the TurboGrafix, but man did the extra power get abused.

I think it’s incredible how times evolve. Back then, everyone was incredibly interested in those games. While some of them are still great, it’s almost hard to imagine being that excited about them at this point in time. Those were the days though. Especially Super Mario Bros. 3. Damn, that game was just incredible. I still think that’s the greatest 2-D game of all time. It’s nice to see where our industry has come and where it will go. It’s still so young, and you just know that there’s so much potential. It’ll be exciting. Peace!

Ha, apparently he’s at Microsoft Game Studios now.

They really can’t restore that “Golden Child” image, with parents buying M games for kids these days. Heck, when I was in 8th grade we made books for first graders, the elementary school we went to was an hour away in a ghetto, and my little girl liked ponies, cats, chocolate, and Halo 2. I am serious!
M games are more common and more accessible for children to give to their parents, unaware of what the M means in the bottom right corner, and say, “I want it”

Along the same lines, check out this Inside Edition story about SMB 1. Featuring a younger, less angry Bill O’Reilly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGFRi_ueq-M
There are some good quotes in this.

Lovin’ your style, Vinnk.

I liked how they pointed out that now, “Merry-oh” can “EVEN SWIM!” So SMB 1 didn’t exist. Admittedly, it’s not quite as bad as the SMB 3 manual listing “Jumping out of Water” under “Moves You Already Know,” since Nintendo of all people should keep track of Merry-oh’s lessons at the Y.

Loads of people say it that way. Nice vid though!

Well, I suppose this explains why I couldn’t upload the newest “invisible bike” picture to the forums…

Phaladone, when I was in 8th grade, when I wasn’t sneaking off to a bowling alley to play arcade games we would hunt through the wooded areas of the parks to find discarded porno mags, and drank stolen vodka plus peppermint chewing gum down in the park, thinking that was how they made “creme de menthe”. Every once in a while someone would steal his older sister’s diet pills or a microdot from his college-age brother, and the gang would further tempt fate. If I had been into girls, my girl would have been into Journey, fake jewelry, and getting to third base and staying there forever, like most of her friends.
Guess it just depends on where and when you grew up. I went to a suburban Catholic school. I’m sure the public school kids were a little tamer what with not being completely stifled for 7 hours a day. And of course, this was before anyone ever said “Just Say No”. As we all know, 8th graders stopped doing booze, sex and drugs as soon as Nancy Reagan told us to. She was a scary lady.

Lynx was basically a portable Amiga 32. It actually had nice graphics and some fun games.

“Golden child” is more in reffeance to the fact that it is the most loved company, not that it is a company for children.
